Victims of Child Abuse and Positive Outcomes
By: Kierstin Long, Jazmyn Mason, and Shelby Martz
Introduction
How do victims of child abuse in the last 20 years cope with their past to live a normal life? A normal life will be classified as; Completing an education, getting a job, and enjoying wellbeing and quality of life. The purpose of this study is to learn how behaviors of family members and how different parental and guardian roles affect a child’s wellbeing as well as create a potential outlet for children and their families so this problem could potentially be recognized and solutions may be given.
The significance of this study is to see how a person copes with past abuse so that she has successful outcomes. It is also important

The reasoning behind this is because abuse is obviously very prevalent, especially among children. Not only does abuse affect a child’s well-being but heavily weighs on the outcome of their near future. There has been research done but the vast majority of research indicates that child abuse physically results in negative outcomes in adulthood. (Harris.Block.Ogle.Goodman.Larson, 2015, P.1082). Important factors that are able to majorly affect the outcomes after abuse include: self-esteem, family structure, how a child develops physically and mentally, and the types of abuse and neglect. The outcomes are more likely to be negative due to these factors but are to be overcome. (Harris.Block.Ogle.Goodman.Larson, 2015, P.1090). Although abuse in the United States cannot be completely eradicated, the hope is that by raising awareness, children and families can recognize that a positive future is …show more content…
A meta-analysis is a collection of several studies and articles that have been published and peer reviewed. They also are an analysis of present day findings (Clark, pg. 484). In meta-analysis they use a statistical approach to combine the results from multiple studies in an effort to increase power and knowledge over individual studies, improve estimates of the size of the effect and/or to resolve uncertainty when reports disagree. The advantages of meta-analysis are that the date is already current and easily accessible. Another advantage is the wide range of similar studies and articles related to the researcher’s question. The disadvantages of meta-analysis are some of the information may become bias or skewed. The researchers need to pick out important findings, that they see fit for their study. They cannot just add every study or article they review. As we do that we will set up parameters for the searches of the literature databases and try to find everything a study that has looked at our question.
The survivors essentially work better in these ‘crisis modes’ and it helps to mask the underlining issues of what they have suppressed. Most health issues that have been apparent in these situations have been sexual, eating, anxiety, and personality disorders, as well as issues with depression and suicidal behavior among just a few to name. (Kezelman, 2014) This article believes that you have to understand what happened and how it relates to the survivor in order for one to lead a normal life. If a survivor negates the abuse and the issues that they typically higher chance of having a mental issues and are more likely to commit crimes as juveniles and adults.
An article posted by the Australian Institute of Family Studies explains the long-term effects of child abuse and neglect for adult survivors. The article explains that there are many different types of child abuse which falls in the categories of physical, emotional, neglect, sexual and witnessing family violence. Abuse can also intentional or sometimes even unintentional. Also, different sub-types of maltreatment may be related to different negative outcomes. The author
This research is to distinguish whether the children, who are exposed to violence or abuse, if left unaddressed or ignored, are at an increased risk for emotional and behavioral problems in the future. Children who are abused may not be able to express their feelings safely and as a result, may develop difficulties regulating their emotions. As adults, they may continue to struggle with their feelings, which can
The purpose of a systematic review is to attempt to find, evaluate and synthesize high quality research relevant to the research question. A systematic review uses carefully developed data collection and sampling procedures that are put in place in advance as a protocol. (Polit, 2012). A systematic review must contain the following: a clear inclusion and exclusion criteria, an explicit search strategy, systematic coding and analysis of included studies, and a meta-analysis if possible. (Hemingway & Brereton, 2009). Systematic reviews are conducted by nurse researchers to avoid reaching incorrect or misleading conclusions that
This paper explores 11 published articles which report on results from research conducted on the links between child abuse and adult physical and mental health. The articles vary in their themes and ideas of child abuse in relations to trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress, juvenile offenses, and teen dating violence. Other articles suggest adult criminal behaviors, incarceration and parenting styles of those who were abused as children. This paper examines the relationship within one another of how child abuse affects those children in later years and stages of life.
Meta analyses, such as ‘Current evidence on risk factors for knee osteoarthritis in older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis’, often summarised the data of 50+ clinical trials which meant the time that would have been spent researching multiple articles was more beneficially used in other research processes, ultimately streamlining the research. The complexity of the language and medical concepts in the journal articles often limited the accessibility of the ideas presented. Typically, websites proved to be not very useful as medical concepts were oversimplified. However, certain medical practices’ websites including Pain Spa UK provided valuable inside perspectives on certain procedures, whilst others were useful for obtaining relevant statistics and providing basic preliminary understanding of certain medical information.
It synthesizes the results of various primary studies by using strategies that reduces biases and random errors. These reviews follow a strict scientific design and provide consistent estimates about the effects of interventions, therefore, conclusions are defensible. Systematic reviews shows where knowledge is lacking and can be used to guide future research. These reviews are usually carried out in the areas of clinical tests such as diagnostic, screening and prognostic; public health interventions; economic evaluations; adverse effects and how and why interventions work. Cochrane reviews are systematic reviews undertaken by Cochrane Collaboration members, aims to help people to make well-informed decisions about healthcare by preparing, maintaining, and promoting the accessibility of systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare
The conceptualisation of the long-term effects of child maltreatment reflects the surrounding circumstances which expose child abuse as a common event. Childhood abuse is a growing epidemic which evokes extreme emotional responses both privately and publicly and is viewed as a risk factor for an extensive variety of consequent problems. 2014 demonstrated that over 137,585 child abuse cases involving 99,210 Australian children were investigated (Australian Institute of Family Studies 2015). Abuse is categorised into neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional abuse. Contrary to the implied supposition that emotional abuse is less injurious in comparison to sexual and physical abuse, emotional abuse ranked as the most commonly substantiated harm type in Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Australia Capital Territory (AIFS 2015). Childhood abuse occurs throughout a period where complex and ordered changes occur within a child’s physiological, psychological and sociological being. The following report will accentuate how the state of flux instigated by childhood abuse leaves children susceptible harmful consequences that will pervert or prevent a normal developmental procedure. Through psychological and physiological wellbeing, adult delinquency and the effects on different genders readers will be able to identify the harmful consequences childhood abuse places on victims and survivors.
The formative experiences that define a child's home life will have a lasting impact on the individual as he or she enters the later stages of childhood, adolescence and adulthood. The degree to which one's family life is loving, nurturing, supportive and attentive is a substantial determinant in emotional, social and intellectual development. Accordingly, a home which is abusive, violent, negative and neglectful is more than likely to have deleterious effects for the child both while and well after maintaining residence there. This turns us toward the focus of the present study, which is the impact levied by domestic violence on children.
It is estimated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human services that one million children are victims of child abuse and neglect in the U.S every year. This number may be an underrepresentation however, as many cases are unreported. Children who experience trauma in early childhood years or adolescence have impacts that follow them throughout adulthood. The common effects include relationship attachment issues, mental disorders, substance abuse, increased
Systematic reviews allow researchers to to determine the best research evidence to address a health care situation. In disease management and casemanagement specialities, the clincial guidelines for managing chronic health conditions are developed from Systemic reviews ( Groves, et al., 2013). Meta- analysis involves the use of results from previous studies; it involves quasi-experimental and experimental studies and stastical analysis are applied to provide the most desired evidence for an intervention, whiles Meta synthesis uses qualitative studies which main focus is interpretation of a specific study for use as evidenced research (Groves, et al., 2013). Lasty, mixed methods systematic review involves the utilization of independent studies which are conducted through narrative and invloves both quantitative and qualitative methods(Groves, et al.,
To conduct Meta-analysis, researchers define the empirical question(s) that are the focus of the review and identify the variables and conditions to be considered. Then, researchers define the independent and dependent variables. To collect the relevant studies, researchers include criteria for the studies and code it to guide the searching process. When the studies are coded, researchers can calculate the effect size, which will help them conduct comparisons and calculate the overall effect
In today’s society, child abuse is widespread and has an affect on everyone who comes across it. The act of child abuse happens everyday to a variety of kids who are typically younger and scared to tell anyone. All children are born with the right to be able to develop, grow, live and love according to their needs and feelings. For a child 's development they need protection and reassurance from adults who love them and help them acquire the skills to be a successful adult. However, some children are neglected and hurt by adults that they trust. The abuse a child receives makes them feel bad about themselves, and it is much worse when it occurs within a family because it makes them feel unloved and alone causing them to have problems. “Abuse of all types was more frequent in those from disturbed and disrupted family backgrounds. Logistic regressions indicated that some, though not all, of the apparent associations between abuse and adult problems was accounted for by this matrix of childhood disadvantage from which abuse so often emerged. Numerous studies have investigated the psychological sequelae of childhood trauma, including posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD), dissociation, personality disorder, and substance abuse ”(“New Retrospective Measure of Child Abuse and Neglect” by David P. Bernstein). The act of child abuse causes kids to have one or more mental problems. Additionally, since people do not recognize the abuse while it is occurring, it causes these problems to
Think about your childhood, coming home from school, going to practice, and then eating dinner with your family, and your parents coming tucking you into bed and kissing you to bed. The sad truth is that not everyone gets to have that ideal childhood according to the American Society for Positive Care for Children there were 7.2 million reported child abuse cases last year. Tiffany Sharples wrote in Time Magazine last year 9 out of 10 child abuse cases go unreported. Abuse does not only affect children physically but it's also detrimental impact on the child's mental health causing long lasting mental health problems.
Fixed effect and random effects models are the two most common approaches used when conducting a meta-analysis (Borenstein, Hedges, Higgins, & Rothstein, 2010). The distinction between these approaches is both conceptual and statistical in nature. The fixed-effect model
