Most of us can’t imagine what would make an adult use violence against a child, and the worse the behavior is, the more unimaginable it seems. Within the United States, child maltreatment is becoming more and more commonly reported as there is over 3 million reports each year. Due to the constant increase of child maltreatment reports, society has become more aware of the issue, which has led to awareness campaigns. (Payne, 87). Even with societies’ knowledge of such abuse there are still serval child maltreatment cases that are not reported. The children that are victims of maltreatment pertains any sort of harm to the child whether it is by injury, neglect, physical, emotional, or even sexual abuse by someone who holds a major role in the child’s life, a parent or guardian figure (“What is Child Abuse”).

Research has shown that the majority of children who come into contact with the Child Welfare System are minorities and from families whose incomes are below the poverty line. Many families are in need of assistance in meeting with basic human needs such as housing, food, and clothing. In some instances, substance abuse, domestic violence, low literacy and limited English proficiency, hinders families from accessing economic assistance and other supports on their own. The higher rate of child maltreatment in minorities in the Child Welfare System is an area that needs to be examined. Particularly focusing on those that identify as African Americans. The studies on children with risk behaviors were done because the increasing number of children being place in foster care due to maltreatment. This is how the study was done to get a up to date examined on youth that had been though protective services and vulnerability factors in foster care. Some individual predicted placing youth in the foster care system would cause an impact in the maltreatment and physical abuse. Maltreatment and physically abuse don’t stop due a child being place in foster care out-of-home care; children that has been in any type of Truman will need some kind of counsel services.

Children in the foster care system are being constantly abused, how is the government in fault for everything?  Various times tragic and violent things happen like children starving or kids being verbally threatened and the government is blamed with no proof making it invalid, in this case there is proof about how they are in fault, as Kubitschek in her 2005 article “ Holding Foster Care Agencies Responsible for Abuse and Neglect” illustrates how the government “removes children from their parents who are claimed abusive and the government places them in a safer environment, most cases this doesn’t happen”. Child Abuse and Neglect continue to be a serious pediatric and social threat to the nation’s children. Child maltreatment is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse may be the most noticeable, other types of abuse, such as emotional and sexual abuses, leave deep, lasting scars. Child Maltreatment includes significant negative experiences with long-lasting effects. These childhood experiences cause detrimental, long lasting effects during cognitive, behavioral, and emotional development and often well into adulthood. This paper will look at the various types of child maltreatment and the causes attributed to them, as well as the long term effects of child abuse and what can be done to prevent these abuses.

INTRODUCTION: “Child Abuse occurs when a parent or a care taker physically, emotionally, or sexually mistreats or neglects a child resulting in the physical, emotional, or sexual harm or imminent risk of harm or exploitation, or in extreme cases the death of a child,” child abuse is a big deal because in today’s society many children face abuse, there are many effects and reasons as to why a child may be abuse.

With child abuse and neglect being so prevalent globally, it is important to recognize why these types of maltreatment occur and is a relevant topic for all to explore. Many are interested in how child abuse and neglect affect the individuals who are victims as well as the use and efficacy of treatment procedures. Child abuse has serious physical and psycho-social consequences which adversely affect the health and overall well-being of a child. There are long-term consequences of experiencing these forms of maltreatment. Awareness and understanding needs to be brought to this devastatingly common crisis and the advancement of child abuse and neglect prevention needs to be encouraged.

The issue of child abuse and neglect is serious, controversial, and is escalating in today’s society. Many people are not aware, but child abuse is rampant in our society. Many child abuse and neglect cases go unreported because a person may not know the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect or perhaps the person or person may feel that this is an private issue and needs to be handle with in the home and no outsiders should be involved. Without the proper awareness of child abuse and neglect and the involvement of everyone this issue will continue to raise our eyebrows.

A great deal of controversy surrounds the number of male victims of child sexual abuse, due to a lack of quality studies. There are different types of child abuse. However the core* of child abuse is all the same. It always leaves a huge effect on the child. Children need predictability*, structure, clear
