Child Abuse & Neglect
Child abuse can be defined as any act or failure to act by a parent or caregiver that results in actual or potential harm of the child. Child abuse can also be known as child maltreatment, which is the general term that is used to describe all forms of child abuse and neglect. Child neglect consists of the failure of the caretaker of the child to properly provide adequate emotional and physical care for the child. Child abuse or child maltreatment usually occurs because of immaturity, unrealistic expectations made by the parents or caregiver, stress in the household, substance abuse, intergenerational patterns of abuse by family members, and the isolation

Child neglect was shown through a case in which a mother in Dallas, Texas was charged with the neglect of her 9 year old child who died from complications of diabetes after the mother failed to help her manage her disease. This shows child neglect because the mother of the nine year old child failed to come to the aid of her daughter, and left her unattended with her medical problems. A mother in North Central Texas had her three children taken away from her because she had a case of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which is a form of both emotional and physical abuse towards the child or children. Munchausen syndrome is a form of medical neglect in which a parent or guardian fabricates or induces illness in a child. An example of physical abuse was a mother in Fall River Massachusetts who was charged with burning her four year old daughter with a curling iron, which resulted in immediate skin graft surgery. The most common form of child abuse shown throughout the website seemed to be physical. 8 out of the 10 stories on the website were listed as physical abuse. Throughout my research, I was reminded of a majority of the material that we went over in class. These stories relate so much to victimology because all these children are victims of abuse and neglect just like any other kind of victim, child or adult. Many cases of child abuse go unreported, but that should not stop people from trying to make a difference or save a
“ The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) … defines child abuse and neglect as, at minimum: "Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation"; or "An act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm."” (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and Administration for Children & Families, "Definitions of Child Abuse
Child abuse is an issue within society that effects the lives of not only the victims but also the lives of many people in the social order. Child abuse is any mistreatment or neglect of a child that results in non-accidental injury or harm and which cannot be logically explained. There are several forms of abuse and neglect and many state governments have developed their own legal description of what constitutes child maltreatment for the purposes of removing a child and prosecuting a criminal charge. Child abuse consists of different forms of harm including physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect.
Child abuse is the physical, sexual, emotional mistreatment, or neglect of a child. There are four major categories: neglect, physical abuse, psychological/emotional abuse, and child sexual abuse (Levi, Lo, Selby, and Vandenburg). Neglect is a passive form of abuse in which a perpetrator is responsible to
Child abuse has been around for years and years. Child abuse is physical, sexual, verbal, and psychological mistreatment or neglect of a child or children. Many kids today have suffered at least one of these abusive behaviors throughout their childhoods and even throughout their entire life. Each individual way of being abused has many ways of being executed.
Defining child abuse is a complicated issue. First, currently the United States does not have a standard definition of child abuse because each state has their definition. Definitions are different at the state and federal level. Child welfare agencies also may have different child abuse and neglect definitions. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) define child abuse and neglect as any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker that result in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation; an act or failure to act that presents an imminent risk of serious harm (Child Abuse and Neglect User Manual, 2003;
What is child abuse? From the word “abuse” we can understand that it is some sort of a maltreatment of a child, causing harm and damage both to his physical and psychological well-being. At the Federal level, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) describes child abuse and neglect as: “any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm.” Child abuse is a very substantial and widely spread problem in U.S. affecting children of any age, gender, race, background or income, with more than 1.8 million investigations done every year and on average, killing more than 5 children every day. The main issue of child abuse is that the abuser is usually someone a child loves or depends on (a parent, sibling, coach, neighbor, etc.), who violates child’s trust putting personal interests first, therefore official numbers of how many children suffer maltreatment might be not accurate enough as remarkable amount of these cases go unreported. Each case of child abuse is unique, with a lot of individual factors involved, nevertheless, we can distinguish some of the common causes, such as poverty, lack of education, depression, mental or physical health
Child maltreatment, also referred to as child maltreatment and neglect, includes all the various forms of abuse ranging from physical, emotional and sexual abuse to neglect and exploitation. This type of abuse can result in the potential or actual harm to a child's health, there development and dignity.
According to Webster 's dictionary, child abuse is the mistreatment of a child by a parent or guardian, including neglect, physical abuse and sexual molestation. The medical definition differs fro Webster 's definition only by a few words. The medical
The current problem is the continued rise in child abuse and neglect today. Within the United States, the problem of child abuse and neglect is far much common than most people would like to admit. Sanchez (2012) stated that child maltreatment is a global epidemic and a major social problem in the United States resulting in at least 740, 000 visits to hospital emergency departments and more than $124 in child welfare, criminal justice, and health care. Norman, Byambaa, De, Butchart, Scott, and Vos (2012) also observed that child abuse and neglect is a global problem that is mostly perpetrated by parental guardians and parents. Sexual abuse is the infringement of a child’s
Child abuse is defined as the mistreatment of children or minors, resulting in a variety of harmful and damaging results with regard to the well being and safety of the victim. Child abuse and neglect reports have more than doubled in the past two decades. Children are abused in many different ways every day and many abuse and neglect cases go unreported every year. Some of the many ways children are the most commonly heard of ones: kicking, punching, hitting. Some children also have to drink cleaning supplies, sleep in cold, dark basements, and go weeks without any food at all. However, all of the above may happen, and outsiders still would not report a suspicion of child abuse or neglect to anyone at all.
“Child abuse or maltreatment constitutes all forms of physical and/or emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment or commercial or other exploitation, resulting in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, survival, development or dignity in the context of a relationship of responsibility, trust or power”. (World Health Organization)
Child Abuse, intentional acts that result in physical or emotional harm to children. The term child abuse covers a wide range of behavior, from actual physical assault by parents or other adult caretakers to neglect of a child’s basic needs. Child abuse is also sometimes called child maltreatment.
The issue of child abuse and neglect is serious, controversial, and is escalating in today’s society. Many people are not aware, but child abuse is rampant in our society. Many child abuse and neglect cases go unreported because a person may not know the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect or perhaps the person or person may feel that this is an private issue and needs to be handle with in the home and no outsiders should be involved. Without the proper awareness of child abuse and neglect and the involvement of everyone this issue will continue to raise our eyebrows.
