In the next 10 years, more than 100 million girls are going to be married before the age of 18. In most cases, girls already are married off to older men when they are still children. There are so many reasons as to why the United States has already banned child-arranged marriages. Today, 20 countries around the world still allow child arranged marriages. The points I will be discussing today are; what child arranged marriages are, the emotional and mental effects it has on women, and lastly how the girl's health is at serious risk. The past couple of days I have researched this topic to give me credibility, and I have come up with some valid points as to why I believe arranged marriages are wrong and should be banned globally.
An arranged marriage is the process of the bride and groom's parents/guardians

There are many complicated reasons they claim as to why these countries still perform arranged marriages and at some points, I can see where they are coming from. However, the things that people do not talk about and the things that people do not really see that is what I am talking about here. So maybe it is a lot to ask that child arranged marriages be ban, but at least raising awareness to expose the truth behind it. Works Cited bureau, The idea. Girls not brides . 2002. 17 march 2017 .

Child marriage in the States is a serious problem. The current law for child marriage states that you must be at least eighteen years old to marry. However, state laws make exceptions if minors have parental consent. Due to the lack of awareness in this topic thirty-three states and two counties in the U.S. reported that between 2000-2015 there were a total of 170,363 minors that were married. Of which, six were twelve-year-olds, fifty-one were thirteen-year-olds, nine hundred eighty-five was fourteen years old. Not only is this number increasing but it is also alarming. The main reasons for child marriage are poverty, gender inequality, tradition/culture, education, and insecurity. Most of the child marriages happen in rural or backward areas of the country. The main reason for this is poverty for sure. Parents who have a daughter but don't earn as much choose this method to give them a better life. For the boys, the marriage does not take place but poverty triggers child labor. Another main reason behind this activity is gender inequality. Even today there are lots of countries that consider
Kingston, many girls are forced into marriages by being told it is the right thing to do. In summary, underage arranged marriages are very dangerous and unfair to the children who are placed under those circumstances while they haven’t even reached the capacity to comprehend what they want.
Forced and arranged marriages are often confused, the main difference between them is that in arranged marriages the couple is allowed to decide, but in forced marriage, they do not have the option to choose at all. Most of the time we believe that this is an issue only affecting people in the Middle East, but that is so far away from reality. The reason I chose this subject is to make people aware that this is happening everywhere, consequently we need to find a way to stop it. I also found out that in America they are not strict laws against it, because it is not considered a threat against people. “In New York State the data shows that 3,853 children were married between 2000 and 2010.” This is alarming, considering that in most of the cases
Sociology: Arranged Marriage Introduction For my sociology coursework project, I have decided to carry out an investigation on family. My research question is; "is marriage still important amongst the Asian community?” I think that what my project is based upon is interesting because I would be able to find out different views on arranged marriages. I would also find out if there’s a contrast between younger Asians and elder Asians on views on marriage.
In modern culture and fully developed nations, the ideology of an arranged marriage is a foreign concept, but in reality the global percentage of arranged marriages is 60 (Toledo 1). Although the majority of these arranged marriages occur in Asian countries such as India and China, this type of matrimony should also be prominently implemented into the society of modernized nations like the United States. Before arranged marriages can completely fuse into industrialized cultures, one must fully understand the concept of an arranged marriage. As commonly thought, parents do not always select the marital partners in arranged marriages; spouses can also be chosen by a community, elders, matchmakers, or religious leaders ("Arranged...
When one thinks of marriage, they think of two adults being in love and deciding to spend the rest of their lives together. To most, marriage is a choice, but according to the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), one third of the girls, under the age of eighteen, in the world marriage is not all they would have dreamt of. All around the world girls under the age of eighteen are getting married. Girls are getting married to strangers, to men drastically older than them and also unwillingly. This can be and is extremely dangerous. A person under the age of eighteen should not be allowed to marry simply because they are not mature nor developed enough to handle adult situations. These girls are having to be put in situations that they do not understand how to solve. Ending child marriage requires work across all sectors and at all
Child marriage is the marriage, usually forced but may not be, between one party of under 18 and another over the age of 18. There are many reasons for child marriage which can range anywhere from social or religious pressure to safety, either economic or physical, for the girl and her family. As well as how many families find girls to be economic strains as the families need to provide a dowry for the girl. Young women tend to not be allowed to work as they are considered worthless and a burden, especially considering that sons carry the family name and are seen as a sign of fertility in most societies. This is an
Child marriage is a global problem that spans across countries, cultures, religions, and ethnicities. Today, 1 in every 3 girls worldwide is said to be married before the age of 18, which can lead to physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. In order to end the practice of child marriages, the international community must work hand in hand within the various societies to provide the policies and programs necessary to achieve this goal.
An arranged marriage can be defined as “the arrangement of a marriage exclusively by a third party or by a joint venture of the third party and the child/person getting married” (Bowman and Dollahite, 2013). Most marriages in the world are arranged by parents or matchmakers and in many cultures in the non-Western world, love is believed not to be a requirement for marriage (Epstein, Pandit, & Thakar, 2013). In some of these cultures, arranged marriages are not only accepted, but are considered a normal part of life and it is believed that falling in love with someone who has a different upbringing and background does not produce a successful relationship (Houghton, 2011). In these specific relationships, the responsibilities of the husband
Forced marriage is mostly seen as a global issue since the practice is more common in parts of South Asia and Latin America. In particular, India has the most problems with the issue. “Love Marriages”; in which individuals choose to get married out of love; tend to not be the norm
According to UNICEF 48% of women in South Asia are forced to marry before they turn 18. These teenage brides do not give their consent for their marriage their human rights are taking away from them and they are treated like an object. An arranged marriage is when the family of both children agree that they should be taking a lead role in marriage, but the couple have agreed to do so. A forced marriage is when families decide that their child should be married to someone for their own benefit for example money to help the rest of their family, the child in which is married off has giving to consent to her or his family or to the person whom they are about to spend the rest of their life
Reducing the numbers of child marriage will allow impoverished South Asian communities to thrive. Child marriages often lead to the spread of HIV, infections, and increased sexual and domestic violence in South Asian societies. Most importantly, child marriage disempowers women in underdeveloped countries and hinders further education. Child marriage often means that girls cease further education and are expected to take on new family responsibilities as a housewife. Avoiding child marriage will allow young boys and girls to become more educated, it will allow for more doctors and civilized workers that will help South Asian societies progress and thrive. Eradicating child marriage and replacing it with education will pull South Asian communities out of impoverishment.
Child brides are a little voiced problem that occur around the world. Fourteen million girls become child brides every year, a number that is increasing due to the growing populations of countries where child marriage is common (Fisher). I chose to focus on child brides specifically in Africa and the Middle East due to the high instances of child marriages in those parts of the world. In my research I also found that child brides are very common in South Asia and South America as well. In Niger, Chad, Mali, Bangladesh, Guinea, Central African Republic, Mozambique, and Nepal over half of girls are married before they turn eighteen (Fisher). This is largely due to traditional tribal practices, cultural norms, and an overall lack of education.
Child marriage, defined as the formal or informal union before the age of 18, affects both girls and boys, even though girls are disproportionately affected (USAID, 2011). One third of girls in developing countries are married before turning 18 and one in nine are married before the age of 15 (ICRW, 2006). Child marriage is a violation of the human rights according to the 1990 African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) and the Convention on the Elimination on All Forms of Discrimination Against Women points out that even though a child may attain sexual maturity early, the child often is not mature enough to handle the physical, physiological, and psychological responsibilities pertaining to child bearing, marriage and motherhood (Maswikwa, et al., 2015; USAID, 2011). Child brides have limited ability to negotiate contraception use and engage in sexual activities that can result in pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. In the long run, pregnancy can have detrimental effects including obstetric fistula, which often occurs among girls who give birth before their bodies are physically mature (Kanesathasan et al., 2008). Child brides are more likely to experience domestic abuse and violence as compared to their peers who marry later (ICRW, 2006). The health problems, abuse and violence can lead to isolation from family and friends, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, depression and post-traumatic stress (ICRW, 2006). Delaying child marriage
Early marriage affects millions of children through the world. It is widely practiced in the countries of South Asia where every year millions of girls-preteens and teens- become the wives of older men. Young girls are married when they are still children and as a result are denied fundamental human rights. Early marriage compromises their development and often results in early pregnancy and social isolation, with little education and poor vocational training
