An arranged marriage can be defined as “the arrangement of a marriage exclusively by a third party or by a joint venture of the third party and the child/person getting married” (Bowman and Dollahite, 2013). Most marriages in the world are arranged by parents or matchmakers and in many cultures in the non-Western world, love is believed not to be a requirement for marriage (Epstein, Pandit, & Thakar, 2013). In some of these cultures, arranged marriages are not only accepted, but are considered a normal part of life and it is believed that falling in love with someone who has a different upbringing and background does not produce a successful relationship (Houghton, 2011). These shows incorporate practical ideas that can be derived from arranged marriages of other countries and focus on compatibility of partners and the larger picture of the nature of marriage and relationships (Davé, 2012). In modern times, an arranged marriage can mean anything from the family facilitating the first date to a marriage match up that is created without any input from the bride or groom (Davé, 2012). These types of marriages offer a more thoughtful and intellectual approach to a long term relationship rather than a passionate and lustful approach that love marriages often have (Davé, 2012).

American View of Arranged Marriages
In the United States, 18 years old is the minimum age for marriage, however every state’s marriage law includes exceptions that allow minors to marry with parental or judicial concent, proof of pregnancy or childbirth (Landau, 2016). These exceptions are tremendously broad and are undefined. The parental exception provides an opportunity for parents to force their child to marry against their will and it is often overlooked (Landau, 2016). In recent years, the recognition of forced marriages in the US has increased and a national response is needed to protect and empower victims (Landau, 2016). Research has revealed that about 3,853 minors were married between 2000 and 2010 in New York and between 2000 and 2013 about 4, 500 minors had been married in Virginia
