It provides information about child welfare, the juvenile justice system, data collected about child welfare by state, community change, leadership development, and research regarding policies. The primary user of this website would be child welfare agencies. The website provided a lot of information regarding child welfare. It was fairly easy to navigate, however the amount of information was overwhelming. The PDF of the Kids Count information book was the easiest aspect of the website to navigate. It offered easy quick links to click to navigate directly to information regarding that subject. I would format the website to have a similar quick link style navigation to make the website easier to use. The information was easy to read and understand.
Child Advocacy Center development has been closely related to the approaches we have been introduced to in this course. Creating protocols for community impact, sustainability and growth have all occurred as this Child Advocacy has developed in my community. In my work it is very important to keep the families and victims we serve at the forefront of our decision making. Each policy, program and renovation is made with how it will impact the families we serve over how it will benefit us. Our program has followed the Principles of Good Practice at times and failed to follow them also. Each program/project has a little of this I believe. In this paper, I will go through each principle and identify how the CAC program has met the standard or identify
Overall, the website was very accessible and easy to navigate. The home page included tabs at the top labeled Health Topics, Data, and Media Centre to name a few. These tabs are helpful for the reader to find what they are looking for and may lead them to explore other topics that they weren’t necessarily looking for also. There is a convenient button along this row of tabs that looks like a house. This tab brings the navigator right back to this home page if they get too far into a certain tab and want to go back to the beginning.
The controversial issue of whether or not Child Protective Services are doing their jobs properly, has grabbed nationwide attention. Child Protective Services is the name of a government agency in many states of the United States whose mission is to respond to reports of child abuse and neglect. Some of these cases may include physical abuse, sexual abuse, and mental abuse (Wikipedia). The child welfare system is corrupted. The parents and guardians who are accused of abuse are automatically labeled as guilty and will have to prove their innocence; instead of being innocent until proven guilty.
Nationwide, nearly 397,122 children live in foster care. In California, which has the largest foster care population than any other state, the number of foster youth has tripled in the last 20 years (Source: AFCARS Report 2013) due to certain circumstance such as; physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse or caretaker inability. Welfare workers turn over at continuing high rates, and many are underpaid, poorly trained, overworked and demoralized. Foster Care system welfare lacks providing services to prepare older youths in foster care in independent living are lacking. Many youths that exited the system discuss their experience such as, being let down, lack of role models, poor training programs, and lack of basic living skills. Foster
The organization and structure of a website could either add to the success of the website’s mission statement or it could take away from the overall success of the website. Aspects that could influence the website’s effectiveness include: appeal, range of offerings, accessibility, efficiency, and the website’s ease of use. On the website’s “About Us” page, the mission is stated: “Education World is a complete online resource that teachers, administrators and school staff can visit each day to find high-quality and in-depth original content. We update the site daily, offering: Carefully curated news briefs on topics that matter to educators, Lesson plans, printables, worksheets
Youth aging out the foster care system is a major concern for social workers. In 2012 approximately 697,000 children spent time in the foster care system. Foster care is intended as a temporary solution while addressing the needs of the family of origin to ensure the safety and stability of children in need. On average these children spend 2.2 years in the foster care with 9% spending five or more years in an out of home placement. Between the ages of 18-21, depending on the state, a child “ages out” of the foster care system. Aging out. Those youth who are unable to attain permanency through programs such as adoption, splic and appla are forced to seek alternatives such as independent living . These youth may become homeless and face larger
In the United States, there are programs designed to protect children. There are foster care, group homes, and other services for children safety. The Child Protective Services in Alabama has the sole purpose of helping children in cases of neglect and abuse (Child Protective Services). These services include foster care programs where children who are at risk of harm from birth family, or who suffers from mental, emotional, or physical issues. These services provide care to all children who meet the state qualifications and removed from their current home (Introduction of Foster Care). The foster care system is where children who can no
Three variables—extended foster care policy, state administrative structure, and community context of child welfare agency responsible for delivering CFCILS—were included to test whether child welfare macro-level factors predict CFILS utilization. Since 2010, states have had the option of extending foster care up to age 21 (see Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act of 2008, P.L. 110-351). The GAO (2014) specified that 19 states had extended foster care up to age 21 by the end 2011 when NYTD Services data were collected. Thus, a dichotomous variable indicating whether a state extended foster care (0 = no; 1 = yes) was included to test whether extending foster care results in differences in CFILS utilization before youth
Overall the Administration for Children and Families is a resource that future teachers, parents, organizations, and many more can find helpful if they are trying to improve the well being of a youth and/or their
The second account of a changing stance toward children’s rights was evolution alongside women’s rights. Before this time, women and children were seen as unimportant under the law, whereas a father was given almost total control over all matters regarding his wife and children. If a father was violent or neglectful, society simply turned their shoulder to it. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, laws pertaining to the family system began to change. A new law recognized the equal rights of fathers and mothers with the mother’s rights reigning over the fathers in regards to the children. Also, the legal system began viewing children as important to the future of society, therefore “appropriate objects of the court’s
Although I have no personal relationship to the issue, I feel very passionately about foster care and how many children who “go through the system” fail to gain the skills and education they need to succeed in their adult lives. My parents have always stressed to me the power of education and how every student should have the chance to feel powerfully educated. I have also learned through different documentaries and articles about how children in foster care lose their senses of individuality and importance when they are shuffled from home to home. Many kids in foster care lack the knowledge of how it feels to be cared for and loved.
The Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) states that there are 427,910 children in the foster care system as of September 30, 2015. This report focuses on number of those that are in foster care system, it shows statistics on race, gender, reason for placement, and age; yet it lacks to include those foster children that are from the LGBT community. Therefore, this paper is going to demonstrate the historical aspect of LBGT youth in foster care, the prevalence of the issues that the foster care system has, current services that are available, and a personal analysis on this topic.
How Many children die every year from Child Abuse or Neglect? According to data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS), estimated 1,520 children died from abuse and neglect in 2013. This interprets to an average of four children dying every day from abuse or neglect in the health care system. Neglect is the most common form of child abuse reported in Canada and is often overlooked. People trust the nurses for their care but this does not really happen in real life when nurses in return betray their trust as in the case of Garrick. Neglect is a type of abuse that is portrayed in Garrick’s case. This is when a nurse who is assigned to care for a person, who is not capable of caring for themselves, fails to provide the adequate care. Garrick was a 7 year old boy, who had multiple health problems as a child. He was hospitalized several times before in one consecutive year. He required continuous health attention. The family contacted many agencies and couldn’t find any nurse who could give them more hours. Then they hired Boudreau for night shifts to take care of their son. Garrick’s mother caught the nurse sleeping during her night shifts four times. She also heard the oximeter alarms going off several times. Mother contacted the Alberta Health Services and presented her concerns. She was told that it is very difficult to find a replacement. Then one day, on Jan 8, the nurse checked the oxygen levels of Garrick and also charted them. In the next two
The Child Welfare Information Gateway website is full of links that are resourceful to the public and social workers/professionals. The website is equipped and delivered through videos, publications, and databases to develop a better learning experience concerning child welfare practice.
