CU1520 – Promote Child and Young Person Development
1.1 – Explain the factors that need to be taken into account when assessing development
Confidentiality – it is important when assessing a child that you have permission from parents or carers to have written records of their child. Most parents will be happy for you to have written observations of their child but will not want these to be seen by other parents; therefore we should not leave notepads lying around for others to see. It is also important to remember that we should only discuss children’s progress with colleagues, parents and other professionals who may need to know.
Children’s wishes and feelings – there may be certain times where children feel upset and/or uncomfortable

Filming/photographs – this can be useful to look over and over and catch things you may have missed the first time, it can also cover several areas. You need to obtain permission for parents of all children in the video.
Sound recordings – this can be useful to record children’s speech and language development and with a various number of recordings you can easily monitor progress.
Information from parents and colleagues – parents and colleagues may see children in different situations therefore it is really useful to get information from them. This can be in the form of questionnaires, face to face conversations, structured interviews and informal chats.
4.1. – Explain how own working practice can affect children and young people’s development
You need to consider how you are positively affecting a child’s life and experiences. You need to look at your relationships with staff their attitudes and values and consider whether these allow the child’s needs to come first.
Checklist:
* Adults need to be aware of the development needs of the child * You have the right systems to ensure that everyone gets the information that they need to work effectively with the child * Make sure activities are planned specifically to support child development * There is a balance if activities to engage interest * Balance between adult and child initiated
2.2 Describe with examples the importance of recognising and responding to concerns about children and young people’s development
We also use communication books to for each child, this makes it easy for parents/ carers to communicate messages to a child’s key worker and to inform them of their child’s daily activities at nursery. This helps to build a good positive relationship with parents/carers and also offers us the opportunity to include parents in the further development of their child at home too. (Parents and practitioners can have a lot to learn from each other).
Practitioners have to put the needs of children first because this will help keep children safe and encourages children to be independent. It’s important to show
Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care and
It is important that when Observing and recording you of selecting the appropriate method to suit desired aim of the observation it. We do observations to help look at the different areas of development i.e. physical, intellectual, emotional, and social.
Children also need to communicate and socialise with their peers, children from other age groups and other adults. They need to feel safe and secure in their environment so that they feel able to speak to adults about any concerns they may have, or to ask questions and seek help without fear of embarrassment. They need good role models who can help them extend their decision making skills and develop independence appropriate to their age and development level. Practitioners have a further responsibility to provide additional support to children who may have special educational needs. This may be through individual sessions within the school, liaison with external services such as educational psychologists or through the CAF (Common Assessment Framework) process. The CAF process was developed to gather and assess information in relation to a child’s needs in development, parenting and the family environment. It is a service that should be offered to children (and their families) whose additional needs are not being met through universal services within the school. Practitioners also need to protect any children who may be at risk of significant harm because of their home life
It is very important that anyone working with children should be able to recognise if a child is at risk of harm of in need because of their vulnerability. The earlier this is recognised, the better outcome for the child involved.
A/c 1.2 The benefit of using a child centred model of assessment and planning is that you concentrate on the person and their specific and individual set of needs and circumstances. A child centred model promotes the rights of the child and allows them to communicate and say what they want for themselves. When children are moved to make the correct choice and take a lead using this type of assessment they tend to succeed as they develop their needs. Children and young people’s needs can be identified through observation and the sharing of information between those that are involved in the care of the young people or children. The parents and class teachers are the best places to identify individual needs because the young people spend more time at school and home than they do anywhere else. School/ home visits, review meetings, hospital consultations are some of the
Communication and explanation between agencies, practitioners and parents is effective as it can help families by giving them guidance and advice with their child when at home, this will help give the parents understanding about the child’s condition and may help them to feel less stressed as they will feel they have help and support from the team as they are specialists in the particular area.
Communication is very important, not only with the child/ young person but also their parents/ careers. Parents and careers need to be kept updated with everything that happens with their child/children and information that they need to know about the nursery itself. The stronger the relationship between the practioners and the parent/ career the stronger the trust the parents/ careers have with their child/ children in your care.
Communication is very important to meet the needs of children, with families and other members of staff on a daily basis to ensure effective team working. It also ensures any health and safety issues are recognised and reported. People communicate with each other for different reasons;

For this task I have chosen to work in an early years care setting. I have decided to work with young children as I have worked with children before which will make me feel more relaxed and comfortable whilst I’m there, and because I have a particular interest in working with children, wanting to be a child psychologist in years to come, I feel that if I do more work with children I will have a better understanding for the future of
