Sports play a major role in Spanish speaking culture. Team and individual sports have been passed down through the centuries in Latin countries. Soccer, or better known as fùtbol in Spanish, is the most popular sport in Hispanic culture. “El fùtbol es el deporte más popular en el mundo Hispano (Aventura’s 106-107).” Every four years there is a world cup, which is the biggest event of the year for soccer fans nationwide. “Cada cuatro años se realiza La Copa mundial (Aventura’s 106-107).” Soccer is not the only popular sport in Hispanic culture. In Mexico, baseball is the second most popular sport. In Peru they favor volleyball, Argentina prefers rugby. Region plays a primary role in the preferred sport in a Latin country. Sports are not only used as a pastime, they can also be used to represent something bigger. For example, the rivalry between Madrid (Capital of Spain) and Barcelona has always been a natural one. The Chilean rodeo is the national sport in Chile, it is a “most recognizable tradition” (El Rodeo Chileno). The Chilean rodeo consists of a group of riders named the acollera whose main objective is to pin a steer by backing it up into a medialuna (half-moon shaped corral). The way the game is scored is by the amount of times they can properly pin the steer, points are lost for poor form in the process. The Chilean rodeo begun during the Spanish conquest of Chile in the early sixteenth century. Back in the day, cattle were not properly gathered and became easily lost so owners would gather them and brand them to keep track of how many they had. In doing this, there became a growing number of these skilled riders who gathered cattle.
