The “Chinese Nation” thought experiment by Ned Block is also know as the China Brain thought experiment, states what would possibly happen if each Chinese person were told to stimulate an action using only one part of the brain, to be more specific a neuron, through a cellphone and see if that would simulate axons in the exact same way that our brains actually function. The reason they used the Chinese population is because our brains have almost one hundred billion neurons and the population of China is almost 1.4 billion people, so Block used to describe the experiment the brain as a China brain with each neuron representing a determined number of people. The theory intended in this experiment is functionalism. Block says that the functionalism
Communism in China as we know has played a major role in the countries political system over the past century. Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao were the co-founders of the communist party in 1921. At the time China was in a world or turmoil ever since the end of the Qing Dynasty in 1911. For 10 years China was lost in a world with new ideas coming from all over the world. At the time, Duxiu and Dazhao saw an opportunity to bring change throughout a weakened China and they exploited it. The communist influence being brought by them and powers such as Russia influenced the Chinese way of thinking that Communism had new beliefs of the world and that all people should be seen as equal under the new government. Personally I am a very strong believer in
“A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” Mahatma Gandhi. A person’s culture is a big part of person’s day to day life, it sets shared attitudes, values and goals. It decided what we wear, eat and do; how we walk, how we talk. Culture is one word that defines how we live our life whether we notice it or not. As an RN’s or any medical professional we are responsible for understanding and respecting our patients and their beliefs. Asian American culture has many traditions, and beliefs that are very important to consider for all medical professionals.
One of the most important inventions of all time was the invention of gunpowder. “Imagine their enemy's surprise when the Chinese first demonstrated their newest invention in the eighth century AD. Chinese scientists discovered that an explosive mixture could be produced by combining sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter (potassium nitrate). The military applications were clear. New weapons were rapidly developed, including rockets and others that were launched from a bamboo tube” (Franklin Institute). The Chinese are known for their inventions that still are used in the modern day. Those inventions are paper, gunpowder, books, and much more.
“ All our civilization is based on invention; before invention, men lived on fruits and nuts and pine cone and slept in caves “ - Reginald Fessenden. All major civilizations have a significant influence on mankind and the different inventions the civilizations produced. Although, it is evident that the Chinese Civilization has the greatest impact on the development of man out of all of the civilizations due to the innovation of gunpowder, and the discovery of the silk road.
In “The Chinese in All of Us,” Richard Rodriguez describes multiculturalism in America in the 1950’s and how people of different cultures reacted to it. Rodriguez was born of Mexican descent from immigrants who moved to California in an attempt to find a better life. Being raised in America, Rodriguez was exposed and influenced by the various amounts of cultures surrounding him; he explored and developed as a person with a culture that went beyond his Mexican roots. Due to his embrace of multiculturalism, critics and people in general mocked and defamed him by saying to him “you have lost your culture” (Rodriguez 729). In “The Chinese in All of Us,” Rodriguez makes claims about the definition of culture and about how people reject multiculturalism in order to preserve their own culture.
Modern China and Japan share many similarities, such as geographical location, and the way the population has grown through the years. Although modern China and Japan bear similarities, the differences between the two nations are plentiful as well. China and Japan have two different forms of government, and separate economies as well. Despite these differences, the rich culture that both these countries boast, connect one nation to the other.
China considered one of the largest economies in the world, it also has a vast emerging
Maxine Hong Kingston’s The China Men is a historical record of the events that had taken place in the West coast of the oppression and racism faced by Chinese immigrants and their struggle to gain the rights and citizenship of Americans. As recorded here, the most critical attack by the U.S. government to the rights of Chinese immigrants were the Chinese Exclusion acts which banned the entry of Chinese and also denied the Chinese who were already in the country the rights of citizens. As can be seen with the case of Chae Chan Ping, the denying of liberty was done by the branch of government which is meant to call out the other branches on their abuses of power and abuses of the Constitution. Instead, they carried out their own racially biased
As many other countries around the world China has its long history of a struggle for equality and prosperity against tyrants and dictatorships. The establishment of People’s Republic of China in 1949 seemed to have put an end to that struggle for a better life. “The Chinese people have stood up!” declared Mao Tse-tung, the chairman of China’s Communist Party (CPP) – a leading political force in the country for the time. The people were defined as a coalition of four social classes: the workers, the peasants, the petite bourgeoisie and the national-capitalists. The four classes were to be led buy the CPP, as the leader of the working class.
There are so many similarities between the population law in China and Among the Hidden.
NW China would be my choice because of it’s natural resources, high population, and stable climate. Because NW China is the self proclaimed “rice bowl” producing tea, rice, and other crops there would always be jobs and food to feed the public. I would live near Hong Kong. I have a personal preference of more populated areas, as I have lived in one for most of my life. I wouldn’t do well in the western side of China where it is more desolate. In addition to that the climate of NW China is very similar to Iowa’s climate, and they are close to each other when speaking of latitude. Des Moines sits at 93º 36' W, and Hong Kong at 114.1095° E. Since the climate is similar, I would know what to expect and prepare for in all of the seasons. In conclusion
Fanshen: A Documentary of Revolution in a Chinese Village by William Hinton is based on Hinton’s visit to the village of Long Bow, China, in 1948, which was one year before the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) victory in the Chinese Civil War. In Fanshen, Hinton shares stories of peasants who were subjected to abuse and exploitation by landlords, as well as how peasants started an uprising against landlords to establish a Communist village in response to the CCP’s rise in power and popularity. The value in its purpose is Hinton’s narration of multiple peasants’ stories because the various narratives present different perspectives regarding their experience of oppression and their own reasons and motivations for a revolution. For example, Hinton
The Chinese empire is by far the empire that impacted the world the most, and it was all because of their amazing innovations. The world’s oldest canal is the Grand Canal. At 1,795 kilometers (1,114 miles), it has 24 locks and 60 bridges, and claim to the third century, BCE during the Qin dynasty with the first emperor, Shi Huangdi. In China each area had it’s own specific written language system. The Qin dynasty writing became
