My decision to go back to school in the fall of 2012 was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made. I’m a stay at home mom of 4 boys with 2 of them being special needs. My oldest was born with a rare genetic condition called hereditary spastic paraplegia and my youngest son was born with a rare condition called Dravet Syndrome that requires 24/7 care. I was at a point in my life where I had lost my identity of who I was and I wanted to be me again. In my interview I had the pleasure of conversing with an individual that was not only an adult learner but now also operates as an adjunct professor for adult learners at a university. Some might not realize the parallels of adult learners and yet still there are vast differences that impact both. It was refreshing to find an individual that was able to succeed as a professional, a student and most recently a professor at the same time. My goal is to introduce you my amazing interviewee and paint a vivid picture of his journey, his growth and through his challenges along the way. Surprisingly this interaction was able to take a lot of excuses and reasons of why a person would be to busy to go back to school.

In recent years, many adults have found themselves underemployed, jobless or without the necessary tools to compete in today's job market. Therefore, deciding to return to school (or start) has become almost a necessity. Enrolling in school as an adult can be stressful. Other factors such as having a family to take care of and a house to manage, further complicate the decision. As some of today's adult students are finding out, it is doable if that person has the right mindset, strategy and support.

In the article, “Multiple Roles Of Adult Learners”, Ellen Fairchild states, “finances play a significant role in the ability of adults to complete their academic goals”(Fairchild). She also states that, in addition to tuition and related fees, adult learners, who are more often single parents with dependents, need their degree to be affordable so they are still able to pay for child care while at work and in class (Fairchild). They may be forced to acquire degrees to move into more lucrative jobs, but the cost of ongoing tuition is a burden they soon choose to forgo. So how can universities address this issue? The competency-based degree program at Western Governors University “charges a flat-rate tuition for every six months of enrollment, and students’ advancement is based on what they can prove they know. Because the students are paying for the time to prove their competence… it’s an incentive to work faster to complete their degree and save money” (Button). This is a great incentive for adult students to stay focused and achieve that degree, especially if it allows them to learn as much as they can for a set fee. Universities should consider mimicking this program as an enticement for reentry adults to enroll as well as using this as a tool for retention. When I heard I had to take statistics I was ready to quit going back to school because everyone that had taken it years ago always told me how hard it was. So, when I became a student in my late blooming years saw that I had to take statistics I freaked out and was well on my way of quitting. Every time I would see I was scheduled to take the class I would change my schedule. Then I actually started the class and dropped it. Well, as you can see I am in the fifth week and writing this paper. I struggled this whole time with the homework assignments until I hired a tutor because I could not out this class off again. I have actually did pretty well when I changed my mind set on how I thought about the class and did indeed learn how to work excel, and do the assignments. Biostatistics allows you to knowledge to ultimately build educated selections regarding findings to include into your own repertoire of data and to follow. Inferential statistics is used when you are trying to reach conclusions that extend beyond the immediate data alone, Descriptive statistics are brief descriptive coefficients that summarize a given data set, and Studying to want to study things in groups statistics was very helpful when learning .

When it comes to education, it is never too late for a second chance. And although returning to school as an adult may be one of the most challenging ways to advance your career, it can fortunately be one of the most rewarding. Success however, is not always guaranteed. To flourish as an adult student requires the tenacity and dedication necessary to overcome the countless obstacles that block the path of success. While the severeness of each obstacle may, financial considerations are generally a momentous dilemma for most returning adults. In addition to financial woes, time consistently outflows its limited supply when prioritizing a schedule to include school, work, and family obligations. When the stress of these elements is enhanced with tight deadlines and unyielding assignments, the whole process can feel overwhelming and futile. Still, undeterred by the unending supply of stressful situations, the rewards are tremendous for those that persevere.

The decision to go back to school is an important one since it could be the difference between living in poverty or creating a financially stable life for your family. In this course we are going to look at some things you can do to set you up for success.

Today's workers need to prepare with continuous job training, growth and development. Given the increased age, experiences and diverse lifestyles of the working population, it is understandable that adult education practices must move beyond the traditional model of teachers and learners, while new skills, working with local companies to match their needs and sending staff into factories and other workplaces to spread the word about state and federal retraining assistance. While trying to decide how to rebuild your life after loss of employment and lack of job opportunities following the current recession, or devastated from a divorce? Adult students faced with other struggles; studies have shown that older adult students face different hurdles, family problems, and poor self-image. These along with poor time management, weaker academic preparation and a need for remediation an increased focus on adult learners and their needs can help. (armour)

Throughout the years people spend in school, there are always students who try harder than others and give more effort to help themselves get ready for the future. On the other hand, there are students who slack to just get through school and as a result, they end up not doing so well. Teachers will allow the students who do not have the academic skills to move forward, and allow them to move forward in their education. Schooling from 8th grade to high school helps mold the undergraduates into whom and what they will become in the future. A lot of teachers will find they have to teach younger people however many more will also be teaching adults. This is obviously true with regards to those within the world of business English. Sometimes it can be a little tricky, particularly if those adults are a lot older than yourself. Many factors need to be taken into account, such as respect and making sure you do not patronize them however many people sometimes feel that they are doing this without meaning to. For a lot of adults, the idea of returning to education can a be somewhat daunting one. A lot of the time, they may not have been in school for a number of years and are now unsure of classroom protocol. Doing tests might worry them just as much as any teenager might be worried about the idea of sitting down to an exam. It is important always to be friendly and smile, let them know that this is nothing to be afraid of. No matter what one is learning, if one is a beginner then there is no shame in making mistakes. Whilst some people will embrace learning the new language fervently, a great deal might find themselves intimidated and simply sit in the class and not contribute.

I totally agree we you that going back to school is a hard decision to make. In my case, I knew that I some point i will be time for me to go back and finish my BS. I know that it is not an easy decision to make, but at the end I believe that we will see the result of getting this done. We just need to continue moving

Deciding to attend school as an adult learner, is by far the most challenging obstacle an adult learner can do. Adults looking to advice in their education or their career look to attend school to achieve their goals. It is a demanding, daunting task to figuring out just what you want to study, where you want to study at, and how to attend classes. With so many options available today, where do you begin? Knowing the options can truly make choosing a school, program, or way to attend classes an enjoyable decision.

Time management is more often than not a challenge for many students. This is more so the case for adult students. It is important to note that unlike their younger counterparts, adult learners face a host of unique challenges when it comes to the management of time. In addition to the demands of their fulltime or part-time jobs, adult learners often have to attend to other responsibilities including but not limited to child care and other familial obligations.
