Summary Response In the article, The Chronicle of Higher Education it talks about how technology effects education. From the fact that technology is taking away from the want to go to college due to google search to the influences it has on our understanding. I totally agree with the articles ideas about technology and its advancements effects on humans. Technology affects our daily routine, affects our education and an even affects how we think. Higher education is less valued because of technology and so is face to face communication. We no longer value saying hi to a stranger at the store or even meeting dates in person seems a little outdated due to online dating. “Technology is a negative influence on us because it separates individuals from reality” (Teen Ink, 2011, para. 2). Have you ever been out in public and realized you didn’t have any human interaction at all? That’s because technology makes that possible. Even getting groceries can be done self-checkout or ordered online. Reality is very far away with technology. The article said the “Internet of Things is well on its way to becoming the Internet of Us” (lynch,2016, p.1). Internet is literally detaching us from reality and soon will be our identity. You walk into most public-school classrooms and you see laptops, I pads, Desktops and sometimes smart boards. These are used as learning tools. When using these tools, the kids really are learning with a hands-on approach. For some kids, it’s a helpful tool for other kids it’s a distraction. The students can use technology for school work at home and it also helps with the Turing in process with teachers. I think that technology can be useful in a classroom setting but should not replace the classroom
“Seventy-four of educators support the use of technology in schools” (“Teaching with Technology”). Without technology being available all the time, students and teachers would not be able to communicate as well and thoroughly, research, get as much help, turn in class assignments on a timely manner, diverse learning styles, and prepare for either college or their career. Students should be able to use the devices or whatever they have in their classrooms if it benefits them and their school work.
Schools have not always been filled with electronic devices as they are today, and believe it or not, all school work was done with books, papers, and pencils. Students in the past had to work hard to do their assignments, and they had to think more about what they were doing. In today's schools, teachers, and students, do most work on electronic devices, with online resources, which is not real teaching or learning. Students need to have hands on learning, instead of learning everything from screens in front of them. While everyday life is also adapting to the use of technology, students should be taught how to go about their lives without it. The excessive use of technology in schools is leading to less creativity in students, less social interaction, and too much dependency on technology for simple things, which will make the real world a difficult place in the long run.
Millennials and technology are almost synonymous today. Technology is everywhere and is a hugely important part of the world today. While that is usually seen as truth, some people question the requirement of technology in schools, employers looking at candidate's social medias, and if technology is good to be used in schools. Many people think it can be a distraction or that it should not be required. Millennials do things very different from the way past generations have previously. Technology plays a huge part in the lives of every child now. Technology can have many pros and cons and some people debate the validity of the claims that technology can help students. Schools no longer strictly ban technology but rather encourage it. Today’s generation can communicate with people across the world, do schoolwork, shop, and attend school all online. This is usually seen as a big advantage to students now. This prepares students more for the things they will have to do in college and in their future careers. Most jobs and colleges rely heavily on technology now more than ever. Teachers even keep their lesson plans in folders on their computers. But can technology negatively impact a child’s future?
Computers and technological devices have been heavily used in millions of elementary classrooms throughout the world. While many people believe this is a beneficial thing some think it is taking over the traditional ways of learning and damaging their social interaction. All the colors and sounds on the screen attract children and make them think that what they are learning is fun and enjoyable. Using computers in the classroom is very beneficial, but it should not be replacing traditional ways of education. As Elizabeth Bohnhorst, author of Floppy Disk Fallacies, stated “…computers are being used more and more frequently as a substitute for books, blackboards, and in some cases, the teachers themselves (251-252)”. Students will soon not have the need to bring pencils, paper, and even a backpack to class because everybody will be using computers as a means of learning. Moreover, computers should be used only as a tool to assist learners and make certain tasks accomplishable more efficiently while also keeping traditional ways of learning.
The biggest problem with today’s education is how rapid technology is advancing. So rapid, in fact, that schools are attempting to keep up, but are sadly falling short. Teachers are being required to incorporate new technology into their everyday methods of teaching. The use of IPads or laptops in classrooms can be helpful to both teachers and students(edreform online classes)”. If a teacher is not overly familiar with the new devices, then the students will lose what little time they have to learn. As a teacher is attempting to fix technical problems in one class, the class that has a tech savvy teacher will be advancing far ahead. On the other hand, if a classroom is full of students who are very unfamiliar with the technology will have to be taught how to operate it, which wastes valuable time. In today’s society technology usage is so much more widespread than it was just five years ago. The new toys can allow schools to broaden their curriculum. Since most work can be done on a single device, kids can work at their own pace and potentially reach heights they could never reach with book, pen, and paper. The benefits of this new tech greatly outweigh the downsides. The biggest problem with technology in classrooms is their lack of use. Technology is one of the greatest things invented, yet it has many drawbacks. In school and at home, smartphones, texting, video games, iPads, Facebook, Web surfing and television do get me distracted and interrupt my learning. Technology is everywhere you can see. Technology is in the workplace, education, at the mall, and many other places. In education, technology is a great thing, making life easier for teachers and administrators everywhere and lessons more engaging for students. However, technology is a huge distraction.
Remember that scary, grotesque, evil monster we were all scared of when we were younger? Well, it's alive, we just can't see it, and it's called technology. As we all know, technology is changing and evolving every day; but it's almost as if the technology is taking over the minds of our future generation. Schools are incorporating technology into learning more and more all the time. Every month there is a new phone, tablet, television, laptop and even thousands of websites. These devices can come in handy and can be helpful, but they almost are consuming everyone's mind and minimizing critical thinking. Many of technology users are children or young adults. Although the use of technology in education can have some positive results, it has more negative effects that are affecting students.
Electronics are believed to interfere with learning. Jose Antonio Bowen states in his article, “NO: Classrooms Must Be a Place of Focus and Mental Stillness,” that instead of improving education, technology “doesn’t solve the problem, it only brings it into the classroom.” However, these problems could be prevented if students were given restrictions while still having the ability to find different and unique ways to boost their knowledge. In “YES: New Tools Let Students Learn More, and More Deeply,” Lisa Nielsen explains that just because they have access to electronic devices does not necessarily mean that they are doing something other than texting or cheating, and that teachers are monitoring their students at the best of their ability.
Parker-Pope’s article sates, “…Experts believe excessive use of the Internet, cellphones and other technologies can cause us to become more impatient, impulsive, forgetful and even more narcissistic” (Parker-Pope 2). She then begins to show that people are not just addicted to our technology we are becoming very dependent to it. Parker-Pope believes that our technology is starting to hurt people social lives and impacting them greatly. Some ways that technology is impacting us that she mentions is; people losing sleep, people neglecting work to spend more time online, and people who are more interested with their Facebook friends than their
Books and face to face learning have started to dissipate as technology has taken over. The internet has taken over the teaching world. Apps have been on the rise since iPads and laptops have been introduced into school districts around the country. Applications like Notability, Desmos, and Quizlet have made it easier for kids to study on their own. Online classes are also growing more and more popular since students can double up on classes and get more credits in less time. Younger students don’t use devices for the same reasons, but to catch up on things they may miss in school due to absences or other extenuating circumstances. The school issued electronics are also great for reviewing materials at home, in the instances of an upcoming test. Most classes and teachers have the added help of being able to teach and or use devices for students benefit. Other classes, like art or gym do not benefit. Visual and physical classes are more difficult in the sense that they require full participation from students. Devices can serve as a distraction in these instances. Nearly 20 years ago when the World Wide Web was released, many people in society had no idea what type of advances were in store for the technological world. Endless opportunities became available worldwide in every avenue of approach, one of those being education. Education has blossomed in the light of technology and will only continue to do so for many generations to come. Although it can be argued that technology is negatively effecting the education system, more innovative ways of learning are becoming available and society has no choice but to conform to these advances.
Some people believe that computers distract students from learning the lesson of the day. There are those who don’t care if they use computers or not. Others believe that we should be able to use computers in schools and improves learning the class subjects.
