The contrast between civil rights and civil liberties are straightforward. Civil rights are the entitlement by the government that every citizen receives regardless of their race, religion, disability, sex, etc. A good example of civil rights would be the civil rights movement that took place during the 1960’s, the right to equality in public places. Civil liberties are the privileges that people have simply for being human beings. These liberties, unlike our civil rights whom are granted by the government, are entitlements we have at birth and cannot be snatched away. An eligible example of civil rights is the freedom of religion.
2. In the Texas Constitution, Article 1 Bill of Rights, Section 32 (marriage), it states that the right to marriage is legal between one man and one woman. This is known as a civil right, because no matter the sex, religion, or race of a person, in the state of Texas, you should never be denied the right to be married to one another. Because the constitution says that marriage is legal between man and women, it took a while before same-sex marriage was legal, but after many debates, in 2015 the Supreme Court passed the law that accepted same-sex marriage throughout the United States. Although my chosen constitutional right is Marriage, I will explain the constitutional right of Equality, since I will be speaking on same-sex marriage on the following section about a U.S. Supreme Court case.
