The Civil War was one of the most deadliest wars ever fought in history. Slavery was a direct influenced this war that shed so many lives. It was also an issue that divided the North and South. Many Southerners directly depended on slavery and so did their economy. The Southerner’s persistence on expanding slavery towards the West not only led to the war but also a moral crusade. The treatment of a race in this manner was unacceptable and called for immediate change which was the result of the American Civil War. The South economy was almost entirely built around slavery. It’s economy made millions in profits off of cotton. After the invention of the cotton gin, cotton could now be produced faster than ever before. This increased the demand for more slaves. 4.9 million bales of cotton were being harvested annually, and most of it was exported through Northern ports. Slaves were also sold in slave auctions by slave owners for thousands of dollars each. They were closely examined for appealing traits such as muscularity, age, and gender and were then priced accordingly. These examples show how dependent slaves were to the Southern economy. Southerners did not want to emancipate their slaves and insisted on the expansion of slavery into Western …show more content…
On the other hand, the Union believed that it is flat out evil to dehumanize a single race based off of color. The South seceded because they felt the Union was hostile towards their interests which was slavery. Eventually, slavery was ruled unconstitutional when they passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which defined citizenship to all citizens. After Lincoln declared emancipation of slaves, many slaves fled north to fight for the Union. Over 180,000 African Americans joined the Union
America’s transformation into the country we live in today has been formed through numerous events during its short history but the event that will split the United States into North versus South is truly one of the most defining events in American history. Through numerous events leading up to the start of the Civil War, I will attempt to show how the United States was destined for conflict and that the Civil War was inevitable. The first way I will show how the war could not be avoided will deal with the issue of slavery. Slavery should be the first mentioned because many conflicts within the United States leading up to the Civil War and the division of the United States dealt with slavery. The Missouri Compromise should also be talked
Although the American Civil War mainly occurred because of slavery, the fact is that slavery had a lot to do with economic and social issues.
The American Civil War has caused many debates amongst a wide range of historians resulting in many different views being formed on all aspects of the War. The argument whether slavery has been overemphasised is one of great debate. Some historians like Michael F. Holt concur that the slavery issue was nearly the only reason and cause of the American civil war. Others disagree, Joel H. Silbey agrees that this is a reason but not the only one other ideas to need to be looked at to the cause of the outbreak of war in America. I will look at this issue and others which caused the beginning of the civil war.
The North didn't care about slavery as long as it stayed in the South. South Carolina seceded, because Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, was voted into office. The Republican party threatened the South's expansion and so Southerners felt that they had no other choice.
Slavery was like an addiction that the south could not break. Although it provided economic benefits to both the north and the south, the addiction or “curse” bound the people to the downfalls of slavery as well. Slavery created an oligarchy of which a small aristocracy of slave-owners would dominate political, economic, and social affairs of both blacks and whites. The institutions negative impact on the South, and even the entire nation would eventually lead to a great tragedy: the civil war.
The Civil War is something almost everyone has a general idea about. It is more than a huge part of America’s history and is the central event in America 's historical consciousness. This war, unlike the American Revolution which created the first American states, determined what kind of nation it would be. Though there are many reasons for the cause of the American Civil War, one of the main reasons is the different attitudes the North and the South had toward slavery. In January of 1863, The Emancipation Proclamation was
There is no doubt that the United States was built upon the hard work of Black-American slaves, referred to at the time as bondpeople, who were the main labor force in producing important American exports, such as cotton or tobacco, which were, in fact, the backbone of the American economy during that time. Due to bondpeople’s overall importance in keeping the United States the powerhouse that it was, the domestic slave trade was a value market that “‘was roughly three times greater than the total amount of all capital, North and South combined, invested in manufacturing, almost three times the amount invested in railroads, and seven times the amount invested in banks’”(23). In “‘In Pressing Need of Cash,’” Daina Ramey Berry, a professor for the Departments of History and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas, looks at a fifteen year period, from 1850-1865, of the economic factors of the domestic slave trade. Berry uses Steven Deyle’s findings in his study, "Carry Me Back: The Domestic Slave Trade in American Life” which examined both the "long-distance interstate trade" and the extensive local or "intrastate" trade of enslaved males and females, who were priced differently depending on their perceived market value (23). With Deyle’s findings, Berry specifically discusses the relationships among gender, age, skill, or type of sale and how those factors, generally, determined the priced paid of enslaved workers.
The civil war was based on mostly greed on the south's part the north's was more morally driven seeing that what the south was doing to people was inhumane. Yes the north was making huge profits from the southern plantations owners but i think that says a lot about north that although they were making money of the salves just like the south they still saw that it was not right what they where doing to the
The American Civil War was a time wrought with peril. Families were split along party lines and took up arms against one another to fight for what they believed was right. Yet there was one group of people who had more to gain than any other present in the war, and that was the African American slave. This war was one of the biggest turning points in the morality of America all because of what happened to the slave in this war. They enlisted in the army, fought bravely, and after long last, gained their freedom.
In the period after the civil war there were many consequences in the economy in such categories as agriculture, labor, industrialization, and transportation. Many of these economic categories took a hit because many suppliers, work areas, and and employees were hurt or destroyed during the war. It took many years after the end of the Civil War for the agricultural industry, labor industry, industrial industry, and transportation industry to regain their footing in the economic world. Even then some of the industries would forever be changed by the things that the great Civil War caused in our country.
The outburst of the Civil War forever changed the future of the American nation. At first, it began as a fight to protect the Union, not as a struggle to free the slaves. Many citizens from the North and South felt that the conflict would ultimately decide both issues. Slavery was one of the primary issues which physically divided the northern U.S. from the Southern U.S. during the Civil War. Even after the Reconstruction Era it continue to divide the two. The Southern resistance to ending slavery was the main reason as to why the South believed in rejecting outsider ideals and it helped establish the Southern Code of Honor that emphasizes aggression and violence.
The overarching theme in the section regarding the economic and social effects of the war is identity. In this section, the South finds that it carries an immense economic burden as a result of the war. Seceding from the Union had cut off the South from Northern markets and trading ports, and therefore, had made it far more difficult for the South to export cotton. With much of the Southern white male population having been drafted into the Confederate army, the lack of the male work force that powered the South now left farms and industries that didn't use slave labor no remained with no workers. Production declined vastly as a result, and the effectiveness of Northern naval blockades led to shortages of food and other necessities.
The South wanted to free the slaves, however, they understood the “negative” political impacts. The North wanted to free the slaves, but they were very divided within themselves. Once ex-slaves gained the right to vote as a full human being (Black Suffrage), the Republican party arose to shape our country. (Roark, 471) With ex-slaves gaining the highly deserved power, the Ku Klux Klan (K.K.K.) was developing to support the democrats and restore “White Supremacy”. (Roark, 471) The political division raised what I would call a second Civil-War within the American government.
For years, we learn a lot about American history to help us understand change and how the world we live in came to be. One of the most important events in our country’s history is The American Civic War. It was primarily fought over the moral issue of slavery, focusing on the economics and political control of slavery. While losing over six hundred thousand Americans, The Civil War consisted of the United States and elven other states that parted from the union to form the Confederate States of America. Eventually, the war was over and the Northern armies were successful, and Confederate States of America returned to the Union. Although the Northern armies were victorious, the South definitely had it’s own advantages and reasons why they
The slave markets were highly profitable for the southern population Engerman notes slaves were priced on the basis of their expected profitability. By the 1790’s the “country was clearly divided into two sections, one slave and one primarily free” (Engerman 370). These cultural differences between the Northern and Southern states set the stage for the inevitable American Civil War. This paper examines the events, which predicted the certainty of the U.S. Civil War and the uncertainty of the Union’ s victory.
