What is civilization? Civilization is people and the advancement of human beings. It can also be something small such as a pair of glasses. In the book Lord of the Flies, a group of young boys are stranded on an island without any connection to the civilized world except for Piggy’s specs. Golding showed this by the fact that Piggy is the one of the very few boys to remain human during their time on the island, and his glasses help the boys survive in multiple different ways. The first time Piggy’s glasses come to real use is when the boys are up on the mountain trying to make a signal fire

The human mind is made of up two instincts that constantly have conflict: the instinct to live by society’s rules and the instinct to live by your own rules. Our civilized will has been to live morally by law and order, and our savage will has been to act out for our own selfish needs. We each choose to live by one or the other depending on how we feel is the correct way to live. In this allegorical novel, William Golding represents the transformation from civilization to savagery in the conflict between two of the main characters: Ralph who represents law and order and Jack who represents savagery and violence. Lord of the Flies has remained a very controversial novel to this day with its startling, brutal, and truthful picture of the
Humanity. It means a lot of things to a lot of people, every single one of us has an opinion about it. Our base for this opinion, however, comes from what we know of humanity, how it’s treated us, how it’s treated our family, how it’s treated others around us, others we don’t even know.
Will Durant, an American writer, historian, and philosopher, once said, “Civilization begins with order, grow with liberty, and ends with chaos.” If civilization is lost within a community, all order can vanish. Every community has some sort of civility and order in place. Without out it, the community would crumble and conflict would break out. Although all communities are flawed, most have something to keep peace. In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, Golding gives several examples of various things that keep civilization in order, when a group of boys get stranded on an island. Golding uses a conch to symbolize the boys’ civilization and order and as the time spent on the island increases, that order slowly disappears.
Piggy’s glasses symbolize reason and innovation throughout the novel; Golding most commonly associates them with the old camp on the beach. Piggy uses his glasses to help the other boys “see”, both physically and intellectually, the best and most reasonable way forward. However, any time they are removed from the beach, chaos is sure to ensue. The first time, when the boys go to the mountain to light the signal fire, Jack and the other boys pry the glasses off Piggy’s face so they can use them as burning glasses. While this does help to start the signal fire so they can be seen by a ship, it traumatizes Piggy since even at this point in the book, Jack scares him. Despite the good intentions for the fire, it soon goes wild and even results in the death of a littlun.
Society is a man made system that allows humans to have an orderly life, and it is important because of its provision of betterment of the world. It is essential for the world to have an organizational system like society, considering that we would struggle to better our lives without someone to take charge or lead us. Feral children are children who lack exposure to society and its factors. They do not experience society like most people do. Because of this, they tend to act wild and abnormal in comparison to normal social standards. In the book Lord of the Flies, the boys stranded on an island lack an organized society. Without society and social skills, it would be hard to find a way to better lives. We would not feel a need to fix the
First and foremost, Piggy’s glasses are used to start a fire which shows a sign of civility as fire is the starting point to civilization, with it being the way the boys will return home. During the first meeting, Ralph addresses the group to say that a fire is needed to go in order to attract attention to the island for a passing boat. The boys then, unsure how to start a fire, “Ralph moved the lenses back and forth, this way and that, till a glossy white image of the declining sun lay on a piece of rotten wood. Almost at once a thin trickle of smoke rose up and made him cough”(Golding 56). This shows that because of Piggy being hard of sight, the boys were able to start a fire and have the ability to return to civilization. Furthermore, due to Piggy’s glasses creating the fire, the boys can now
“In absence of orders, go find something and kill it” Erwin Rommel world war II 7th panzer division general. It doesn’t seem to have much to do with lord of the flies but it does. When these boys are in left alone they start fighting and pick sides. In the Second World War people picked sides. These boys go into a small war of their own and it is brutal and has one evil over powering faction in this book the history’s most notorious generals, leaders, and even dictators are represented by these boys.
What makes humanity civilized? The combination of laws, rules, discipline, and being able to have a reality check. In the novel Lord Of The Flies, The boys who are stranded on the Island face a hardship meeting those expectations of a civil society. In the beginning, they were dealing with knowing what they had to do to stay civil but slowly over time they began to showcase characteristics of savagery. Unable to meet these needs the Island became chaotic. The lack of a humane civilization would result in a catastrophe and the loss of lives.
The adventures of kids stuck in a deserted island as they try to have civilization. Lord of the Flies written by William Golding which is a novel. I would say that the theme of this book is Savagery vs. Civilization because in the book those two things are what is explored. A plane crash is the result of the plane being shot at. The plane was filled with boys and when the plane went down they landed on an island. On that island, we came into a conflict between Jack and Ralph, who represents civilization and savagery.
The novel “Lord of the Flies” was written by William Golding to demonstrate the problems of society and the sinful nature of man.
The beast shows the significance of civilization because it shows what happens when the boys lose hope in going back to civilization. When Ralph says that the hunters can’t even defeat the beast, Jack says, “He’s like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn’t a proper chief” and leaps “down from the platform and [runs] along the beach” when nobody agrees with him (Golding 126-127). This shows that the beast keeping their chances from returning to civilization brings the boys deeper into savagery because the boys begin to think of survival rather than rescue. When Ralph belittles the hunters that Jack believes is vital to survival now that they cannot be rescued, which causes him to separate and bring about chaos. When the boys think that Simon
The novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, tells of a group of young English boys who find themselves stranded on an island and destitute, or devoid, of adults. The boys elect a leader and find great solace in Ralph, who appears very competent. However, this changes when an ominous sight of a beastie emerges. Here, it is told how the evil in civilization does not destroy humans but instead the evil in humans destroy civilization. This is shown when the boys mercilessly kill the sow and when an adult appears but comes from a war zone. The boys face a gradual transformation from civilized people to barbaric savages. By the end of the novel, the boys are running rampant and extirpate, or eradicate, all forms of civilization.
