Objective: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to classify sentences according to their type of sentence structure.
1. Introduce the topic
Today, we are going to learn how to analyze sentences and classify them according to their sentence structure using the book The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. First, we will be looking at the different type of sentences that the writer uses in her writing. Then, we will use some of these sentences to learn how to classify a sentence as simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex.
2. Share Examples
Let’s take a look at these four sentences that I encountered in this book (write them on the board):
These four sentences show the four different type of sentence structures that you will be able to classify after working with the different types of sentences.
3. Provide Information
Now, I am going to show you how I can classify a sentence as simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. Remember to pay close attention because you are going to be looking for these types of sentences after I finish explaining the four types of sentence structures. I

• Compound sentence: has two or more independent clauses and no dependent clauses.
• Complex sentence: has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
• Compound-complex sentence: has two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent classes.
You are all probably wondering what an independent clause and a dependent clause are. Well, a clause contains a subject and a predicate. There are two types of clauses: an independent clause and a dependent clause. An independent clause is a complete thought that can stand alone as a sentence. A dependent clause is an incomplete thought that is not able to stand alone as a sentence. Note: An anchor chart with these terms, definitions, and examples are important for the students to have to be able to refer back to them.
4. Supervise

Throughout life, people face many dilemmas, when they overcome these obstacles they portray part of their personality. This is seen in the novel Hate List, as Valerie is being judged, tormented, and degraded by people in her town after the shooting in Galvin High. She is determined to put the past behind her and learn new traits about herself she never knew of. A theme that is shown in the novel Hate List, written by Jennifer Brown is, a person’s emotions and thoughts can be faltered depending on how they respond to the conflict they have come across. In the novel, Hate List, after the shooting Valerie Leftman felt overwhelmed she wanted to forget the shooting and help others by painting and speaking her emotions.
In Part One how does the diction (word choice) and syntax (sentence style) change between the segments focused on the Clutter family versus those focused on Dick and Perry? Explain these differences and find three strong examples for each (6 total) which are illustrative of your claim.
Correct When the elements of a sentence are put in series or a list and are the same grammatical kind, the technique is called
In Weille’s article we learn syntax is much more than sentence structures and abstract thinking. Syntax is how sentences flow together, giving shape and an unseen rhythm. Weille
Clauses are groups of words which express an idea and contain a predicate (i.e., a conjugated verb) and a subject, although of course in Spanish the subject is often merely indicated by the verb ending. They can be divided into two categories: independent clauses (which make sense in and of themselves) and dependent clauses (which need to be used with an independent clause to form a complete sentece). In general, the the indicative, the conditional, and the imperative (command forms) are used in independent clauses; some exceptions will be given in section I below. The subjunctive mood is found primarily in dependent clauses, but of course the other moods can occur there as well,
A piece of writing is much more than just words on a page. Just as a potter carefully molds and carves every detail and shape into a piece of art, so does a writer. Each comma, dash, antecedent, and fragment is picked cautiously. Each grammatical choice brings to pass a different rhetorical effect creating an irreplaceable and unique piece of art filled with fine detail. Rhetorical grammar is the clay of a potter. One must have it to begin and it has a variety of options to choose from. A person’s ability to understand and use grammar is as the technique owned by the craftsmen. Just as clay can be brittle and weak, so can grammar if used incorrectly or not to its best ability. The most amazing work is not made simply by chance but because of
Informal assessment revealed strengths and weaknesses in Jimmy’s structural knowledge and use. Jimmy mainly used compound (e.g., I have two brothers and two sisters); however, the majority of his sentence structures were run-ons. He utilized simple connectives (“and;” “then”) and causal connective (“because;” “so”); however, they were frequently used as sentence starts to continue an idea within a run-on sentence (e.g., “they moved to California and then the world where they were XXX started shaking so then the floors were breaking and…”). Children of Jimmy’s age are expected to use a variety of simple connectives (e.g., “but”, “because”, “or”, “so.”) and are expected to use sentences with multiple embedded clauses (Paul & Norbury, 2012). In
9. Syntax is the study of sentence structure. Observe the length of the sentences in the first and last paragraphs of the speech. What differences do you find? How do these differences affect the tone of the speech?
How we form and describe a sentence plays a major role towards determine the meaning of the sentence. This results in making each sentence very important to structure correctly so as to harness the most powerful meaning from the words used on the sentence (Iny 2006). To understand how word structure affects a sentence, we shall examine 5 sentences from a paper “the Purpose of Government written by Anon. A. Moss.
The language of an essay adds to the effectiveness of the writing. The sentence structure can change the way the audience perceives the sentences. Booker T. Washington use declarative and exclamatory sentences in his speech. When using these type of sentences, each one has a different interpretation by the reader. A declarative sentence makes the statement sound like a fact. Exclamatory sentences are more forceful in the statements they make. These make the speech an effective argumentative essay.
As we look at principle three it instruct needs to ensure that learners also focus on form. Professor Ellis explains that the teacher can achieve this by focusing on inductive and deductive grammar lessons. It allows and make ELL students aware of explicit grammatical rule, it gives the learner specific practice on grammatical structure, and it gives them the opportunity to get corrective feedback. (Ellis, R, 2008)

The second level grammatical-rhetorical analysis aims to investigate the relationship between grammatical choice and rhetorical function in written English for science and technology. Discourse analysis as interaction represents the third level of language description. Most importantly, interactional analysis outlines the concept of interpretation of discourse by the reader or listener. Discourse analysis appears to have steadily moved from surface-level analysis to a deeper description of language use. However, in the context of language teaching for specific purposes, applied discourse analysis seems to represent a rather narrow description of language in use and is inadequate in its explanation. In order to introduce a thick description of language in use, it is necessary to combine socio-cultural and psycholinguistic aspects of text-construction and interpretation with linguistic insights to answer the question: why are specific discourse-genres written and used by the specialist communities the way they are? Genre analysis as an insightful description of English for specific purpose texts has become a useful and powerful tool to arrive at significant form-function correlations which can be utilized for a number of applied linguistic purposes.
In the third part, three pedagogical implications will be presented. In addition, a grammar activity and its theoretical rationale will be respectively reported in the fourth and fifth part before the final conclusion is displayed.
