The history of lab technicians can be dated back to the same time as medicine actually maybe even a little earlier. The ancient Greeks, “saw the value in examining body fluids to determine a disease”(Berger 1). Because they saw this is part of the reason that Lab Technician’s exist today. The beginning of this history can be dated back to “1658 with Jan Swammerdam’s discovery of red blood corpuscles”(Career Research). Coming along with another great accomplishment was, “Robert Koch and Louis Pasteur discovery in bacteriology in the 1870s”(Career Research). When I first entered college, I had thought that I wanted to major in Biomedical Sciences. The reason being, I was diagnosed at the age of 7 with Type 1 Diabetes. I was tossing around the thought that I was interested, possibly, in having a career that involved my disease in it. From being a part of this compass program, I have learned about many careers. Even though I learned more of what I do not want to do, it has helped me narrow down to majors that I am more interested in. I was thinking of still having the possibility of entering the medical field, but I am unsure. Learning about the different careers in the medical field and visiting labs has shown me that it isn't something that I am interested as much as when I first enter college. While I do want to be involved with my disease, I’m not sure if I want to have a career with it, but it could still be a possibility.

I was scrolling through the weekly microbiology email update when the rare job section caught my eye. I saw there was an opening to be a lab assistant. I immediately filled out the application and attached my resume, hopeful that I would be considered for an interview. After I submitted my application, I began to anticipate what the microbiology lab would be like.Would there be other freshman working as assistants? What sort of research would they conduct? Finally, the day arrived to find out.

Nestled into the heart of the college town Starkville is Mississippi State. This university offers its pupils a total of 175 different degree programs to choose from their eight academic departments. To the east and across the state line is rival college, the University of Alabama. Here students have a garden of degree programs to pick from; 230 programs to be exact. Phlebotomist use record keeping and they also pay attention to detail which are extremely important in this field. Phlebotomist will often use computers to input all the necessary data about each patient. Preparing samples for laboratory analysis and storing them appropriately are included in the responsibilities of the phlebotomist. Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments also known as CLIA are a specific agency that regulates the lab testing and requires that the laboratory professional to be certified by their state and also by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) prior to accepting human samples to diagnosing purposes.Congress passed the CLIA in 1988. There are 3 agencies that are accountable for maintaining CLIA. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Each agency has an exclusive role in assuring quality laboratory testing. In total CLIA covers about 254,000 laboratories entitles (Ryan, Jorge).

After discovering my passion for science and math, I pursue a career in Clinical Laboratory Science with enthusiasm. My desire to study this subject originates from the exciting and rapidly-moving subject area that is highly relevant to major issues facing society today. Clinical Laboratory Scientists play a crucial role in the healthcare field; in detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients. My goal is to be involved in the latest advances in medical research and to constantly be expanding my knowledge about my field. On top of this goal, Clinical Laboratory Science remains a challenging, rewarding and inspiring topic that will motivate and shape my career for my entire life.

I intend to study Medical Laboratory Science at South Dakota State University. My goal is to acquire my bachelor’s degree by completing four years in that program to earn a degree that would allow me to find a high paying career. An additional perk to my career path would be the fact that Medical Laboratory Science positions are highly in demand in South Dakota. I do plan to live and work in South Dakota after I graduate.
