Coach Hal Mumme’s religious discrimination against Muammar Ali in this chapter is very disappointing. New Mexico State University should be applauded that this type of discrimination is happening against one of their students in 2005 by a trusted staff member. It should matter that is student was a promising athlete; the fact that students are still experiencing discrimination in 2005 is highly disappointing. Not that the year should make a big difference, discrimination has been and will always be wrong but to see discrimination still being facilitated I 2005 demonstrates that although we have come far from oppression it still can and does happen. In this particular story according to Matthew Rothschild, Muslim-American running back Muammar Ali had a promising future ahead of himself. During his sophomore year in 2004 he was even honorable mention All American. Things were looking very promising for Ali until a discriminatory encounter with his coach began a downhill spiral. During one of the team’s practices the coach tried to force Ali and two other Muslim teammates to pray a matter that was not custom to their religious beliefs. Their refusal to pray in the matter their coach expected is what is believed to have had begun the ultimate removed if Ali and a star player of the team, stripping Ali of a possible career. I believe this type of discrimination has the same consequence as age discrimination as described in the ABC News special on growing prevalence of age
