Coffee is the “good morning” kiss on the lips to people across American culture. Its diversity and adaptability continue to intrigue me, despite the fact that it took me years to acquire the taste. When I first discovered my love for coffee at Purdue, I further extended my passion by researching local coffee shops, trying new combination of drinks, and committing my study time to the locations that I discovered, including the location of my photo essay, Star City. After interviewing Tori Cook, a close friend of mine, and revisiting class readings, I was able to find new perspectives on the ways in which coffee contributes to and impacts daily life through its broad spectrum.
In order to gain more insight, I considered Guest’s advice on preparations and strategies for conducting fieldwork. First, I determined who would be a good candidate to interview. Being that Tori is a fellow coffee lover, I asked for her informed consent before conducting a 30 minute, semi-structured interview consisting of multiple open-ended questions. The questions that I asked dealt with the ways in which coffee has influenced her social, personal, and cultural outlook. Some, but not all, of the specific questions entailed asking what her favorite coffee memories are, ways in which she learned to make coffee, who she likes to drink coffee with, personal fulfillments she’s achieved in drinking coffee, and ways in which coffee drinking patterns have changed since she was younger.
