Coffee is the “good morning” kiss on the lips to people across American culture. Its diversity and adaptability continue to intrigue me, despite the fact that it took me years to acquire the taste. When I first discovered my love for coffee at Purdue, I further extended my passion by researching local coffee shops, trying new combination of drinks, and committing my study time to the locations that I discovered, including the location of my photo essay, Star City. After interviewing Tori Cook, a close friend of mine, and revisiting class readings, I was able to find new perspectives on the ways in which coffee contributes to and impacts daily life through its broad spectrum.
In order to gain more insight, I considered Guest’s advice on preparations and strategies for conducting fieldwork. First, I determined who would be a good candidate to interview. Being that Tori is a fellow coffee lover, I asked for her informed consent before conducting a 30 minute, semi-structured interview consisting of multiple open-ended questions. The questions that I asked dealt with the ways in which coffee has influenced her social, personal, and cultural outlook. Some, but not all, of the specific questions entailed asking what her favorite coffee memories are, ways in which she learned to make coffee, who she likes to drink coffee with, personal fulfillments she’s achieved in drinking coffee, and ways in which coffee drinking patterns have changed since she was younger. The caffeine in coffee become an ethical increase over alcohol and have become a fashionable social beverage. It was interesting to see how it started off as this very exotic drink only for the upper class and then turned into what it is now. Coffee is a very fashionable drink that does not cost much that many have led their days with in today’s society.
I set out to find a place to begin my observations, not knowing what to fully expect, what I may find. So I decided to look around at what is close to my home that isn’t a place I frequent or have even visited at all. Then it came to me, the Starbucks that is only about a mile away is a perfect place for me to observe subjects that I would consider different from myself, seeing as how I consider such obscene prices for coffee ridiculous. Starbucks is a very popular chain of coffee vendors that describe their product as more about quality than what Americans are used to in typical coffee joints.
Coffee is a beverage that is globally consumed, but also a product that has different values in different parts of the world. The role coffee plays in society differs around the world, from the farmers who grew the crops to the people who constantly consume them. Social theoretical perspectives are capable of showing the different roles coffee has in different societies. Symbolic interactionism, functionalism, and Marxism are three theories which show coffee’s role sociologically. These theories show how coffee affects people physically, how it affects them emotionally, how it leads them to have interactions, how it connects different parts of society, and how it’s economically controlled by a select few.
Joshua Davenport owned a coffee bar/bistro in the small town of Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania situated on the Delaware River. I gathered my information from Dunkin’ Donuts shop on the Third Avenue. Dunkin’ Donuts is one of the largest coffee shop chains in the world. I chose this because it is close to our house. When I first walked into the shop, I heard Chainsmokers’ Closer song. It was also a quiet place sometimes where you could just sit and relax. It is a small place with limited seats. There were only three small tables and a long table. The place is air-conditioned, so it is cold. There is also free Wi-Fi, so the customers will not get bored while they are waiting in line or drinking their coffee. There is also a Baskin-Robbins inside the store, so it is not only a coffee shop but also an ice cream shop. I wanted to interview one of the staff, but they were busy. I ended up interviewing an old woman because she was sitting with me since there were limited seats. She is 71 years old and originally from Mexico. She was 23 years old when she moved here. She is married to a Mexican too and they had three children.
Fortunately, similarly to the panini station, the coffee bar in Stuart has consistently strong options and a convenient payment system that make coffee-consuming students like me feel at ease. Starting mornings the same everyday makes the school week easier and more manageable. Stuart’s coffee bar provides a variety of options, but always has the same list. Moreover, you can watch the drinks be prepared and can specialize your coffee however you like. I begin every morning with the BC Bolt, which has a unique title honoring the school. Later in the day I typically order an Iced Mocha Latte. Chocolate syrup swirls around the interior of the cup before two shots of espresso and 2% milk pour over top. The consistency of coffees offered each day in the same location makes the coffee bar at Stuart feel like a favorite coffee shop I visited each day in Pennsylvania. Furthermore, students conveniently pay for these delicious Stuart coffees on the meal plan, unlike at Stokes’ Chocolate Bar. To buy a coffee from Stokes’ Chocolate Bar, students must pay by Eagle Bucks, which is real money instead of the tuition we already pay. America is a country that is obsessed with its coffee, now more than ever before. Although coffee has spanned generations, the craze did not exist like it does today. According to anthropologist William Roseberry of UBC, coffee was on the decline in the 1960’s and hit an all time low in the 90’s with only half the country drinking about a cup a day (D’Costa). However, with coffee being the world’s most commonly traded commodity, second to crude oil, much money is at stake when people stop drinking it. Coffee has played a major role in the lives of many people around the world. “Yet, poetic as its taste may be, coffee’s history is rife with controversy and politics…[becoming a] creator of revolutionary sedition in Arab countries and in Europe” (Pendergrast xvi). After reading Uncommon Grounds, it is apparent that the history of coffee is intertwined with the aspects of the globalization process, the role of Multi-National Corporations, and global economic issues.
Imaging if there was no more coffee in this world, how would you feel? Nowadays, coffee becomes an important part of people’s life. People who often work overtime, they drink coffee because caffeine can make you awake; people who have to wake up early in the morning, they drink coffee because instead of making breakfast, coffee is more convenient; people drink coffee during the free time, because it also tastes good.
As for other coffee consumption facts, brewing coffee at home declined from 2006-2011 with 75% of total coffee sales made “away from home” (High Beam Business, 2012). Furthermore, an interesting study revealed the growth in this target market: “another new and large growing target market within the coffee industry is college-age students and post graduate individuals residing in urban areas. Seeing someone holding a cup of coffee on the street is not unusual at all nowadays. In fact, they are starting to get more common. There are now different varieties to choose from. Shops or cafes also provide a lot of different choices or products to consumers. Prices could range from low to high, depending on what type of coffee beans you have chosen to make the coffee. By adopting the sociological imagination to coffee, it gives us a better understanding of what coffee represents in a social context. Based on the definition by Mills, [the sociological imagination can be defined as] the ability to understand the dynamic relationship between individual lives and the larger society (Ravelli, Bruce and Michelle Webber, 2016). This is basically where individuals have to think outside the box. In this case, we have to think specifically for the object, coffee. For instance, how does it perform its function in the society?
Though coffee houses throughout Europe have a self-explanatory function of meeting point, discussion area and recreational facility, this concept has only recently been explored in North America, and is gaining in popularity and social recognition as we speak, and is only expected to increase over the course of the next few years.
The second major flaw in the coffee taste studies is the existence of external variables. It is evident that the first and third studies had underlying variables that may have significantly affected their outcomes. The first study notes that “the author of this study personally purchased coffee to go at four places, took them to his office, tasted them, made notes and drew conclusions” (pg. 63). This indicates a major flaw of this particular study because the time frames for which each cup of coffee was obtained and then consumed are inconsistent.
The demand for coffee shops is born from the increased number of individuals seeking coffee brewed outside of the home. This creates a larger market for coffee shops. An increased amount of people are starting their mornings off by purchasing breakfast and a cup of coffee away from home (Tuttle 2014), more people are enjoying gourmet coffee (NCA National Coffee Drinking Trends 2015 Infographic), and younger generations are demanding more coffee and coffee drinks from coffee shops (Tuttle 2014, S&D Coffee and Tea inc. 2014, Statista 2015). Coffee shops must compete with at home coffee, work place coffee, and teas for the caffeinated beverage markets (LN 2015). Demand for coffee within different markets varies, and provides competition for coffee shops. Single cup coffee makers, increasingly qualitative instant coffees, and gourmet beans are all sources of competition that could satisfy the demand for coffee.
