San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, has immersed himself into a world of controversy by refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem in protest of wrong-doings against African Americans and other minorities in the United States. Kaepernick's statement on this issue, when asked why he was not standing was, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” So naturally, the debate over whether or not Kaepernick’s reasons for kneeling were valid began.
Kaepernick’s decision to kneel, instead of stand, has brought anticipated backlash. Colin Kaepernick has been referred to as unpatriotic and has been told, rather impolitely, to leave the country. He was

If this is not the time to do this, then when is the time? People saying that we should save football time for football are essentially asking us to just set aside the issue of racism and injustice so that they can have a good time and feel comfortable when watching football. Kaepernick and his supporters should not have to set aside their beliefs in order to allow other people to have a good time. When this was brought up to Kaepernick he remarked, “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other …show more content…
They would rather attempt to undermine his credibility, or pretend he is insulting the military, than hear him out. He has said that he does not feel personally oppressed, stating, “This stand wasn't because I feel like I'm being put down in any kind of way. This is because I'm seeing things happen to people that don't have a voice, people that don't have a platform to talk and have their voices heard, and effect change. So I'm in the position where I can do that and I'm going to do that for people that can't.”
Another popular reason for people to disagree with Kaepernick’s actions is that they simply do not even believe that the inequality he is protesting actually exists in today’s world. They refuse to admit to themselves that Kaepernick might actually be right, that America might not actually be so perfect, yet. When they hear his protest, they feel uncomfortable due to the current chaotic controversy surrounding the issue of the Black Lives Matter movement.
It is clear that people did not take the time to try and understand the substance of Kaepernick’s message. They lack the courage to ask themselves a difficult question: What if Kaepernick is right? Having that conversation is important. They are bothered by his protest because he has brought the reality of “the outside world” into the world of football. That makes them feel uncomfortable, and they
In August of 2016, Kaepernick began his protest during a NFL preseason game where he initially sat during the singing of the national anthem. At the time, his rebellious efforts became unnoticed, but he soon enough made headlines when someone took a photo of him sitting during the anthem. Thus a social issue was born from the public’s reaction from the photo. The negativity of the public’s reaction stemmed from the norm that it is customary that people raise their right hand over their heart while facing the flag when the Star-Spangled-Banner is playing, so if one does not follow this norm it is identified showing disrespect. Inevitably, the prediction of the people’s reaction were to be expected as they were outraged when Kaepernick broke the norm. Although, it is legal for individuals not to follow these sacrosanct protocols, citizens of the United States find this norm obligatory.Would you stand by and constantly watch the same social issues to keep reoccurring in your neighborhood? Not only that but it keeps happening to different people by the same organization? When numerous acts of police brutality occurred, Colin Kaepernick decided to protest. He could no longer stand by and do nothing; he decided to take a knee. For professional National Football League (NFL) player, Colin Kaepernick, his response was “no”. One of the last waves that came toward the end of the summer is the kneeling while the national anthem played during sporting events. When Kaepernick decided to
A big controversial topic going around in the news over the past few weeks has been Colin Kaepernick and his stand to end the hardship for people of color and police brutality in the United States. This silent stand started early this preseason when a number of different events involving people of color and police officers around the United States not getting along. However, this has started to become more publicized as more and more people in the National Football League have been joining in with Colin Kaepernick and taking a knee or sitting during the national anthem. This stand has become way more than a simple silent stand as many people around the nation are starting to voice their opinions on this subject. Even though everyone argues their thoughts on this subject.
For many, speaking up for what you believe in can be difficult and risky, but ultimately worth the risk. Colin Kaepernick took this risk, by kneeling during the national anthem to stand up against “ police brutality and the inequality that people of color”(NFL). With many unjust shootings and police beatings of African Americans, Kaepernick’s teammate Eric Reid couldn’t stand the violence anymore after “the killing of Alton Sterling in my hometown Baton Rouge, La”(Reid). Reid joined Kaepernick in taking a knee during the national anthem, in doing this Kaepernick and Reid inspired other players to raise awareness and help those in need. This decision caused huge impacts on the nation, the NFL, and the youth who look up to the players of the NFL.
Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers quarterback, started much controversy against America when he remained seated for the national anthem during a preseason game against the San Diego Chargers. Kaepernick seems to had developed an enmity against America. He feels that he and fellow African American athletes should not show patriotism to their country because of the unfair treatment their ancestors went through throughout history. Although Kaepernick does have a point about the racial discrimination colored people went through throughout American history, he still has no right to disrespect his country. Kaepernick himself is not black, he is white, but he is just drawing attention to himself.
Colin Kaepernick, a San Francisco 49er quarterback but also a daring black man that has decided to speak for the voices that can’t, has made his voice heard by kneeling during America’s beloved ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. Jaweed Kaleem writes in the article “In the ‘land of the free,’ are you free to sit out the national anthem?” about the controversial topic in which he showcases the two sides of how it deems to be disrespectful to sit out the national anthem vs how Kaepernick has the freedom of expression to sit out what he believes does not benefit him.
Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has created much controversy in the nation over his latest protest. During a preseason football game Kaepernick was photographed sitting during the national anthem (McKirdy). When asked about the action later, Kaepernick explained, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” (Wyche). The nation exploded. Many showed their support for the quarterback, expressing pride in him for “standing up” for the things he believes in. Others displayed their anger with him for disrespecting the flag and all the things the flag represents. After seeing what a backlash his action received, Kaepernick decided to kneel instead of sitting, claiming that his new way of protesting would show more respect for those in the line of duty (Anthem uproar). Although he has the right to protest, sitting during the national anthem is the wrong way to draw attention to a specific cause.
“Civil Disobedience,” by Henry David Thoreau is similar to the point the NFL star Colin Kaepernick is trying to get across. Henry says at the end of his writing The Civil Disobedience “Let Every man make known what kind of government would command his respect, and that will be one step toward obtaining it,” he is saying if people will start speaking up they will start to take notice what people is actually saying and wanting. NFL star Colin Kaepernick doing national anthem he will take a knee and not stand because of all the Black African Americans that's getting killed. Not just Black African American, but all the innocent that's getting served no justice. Both had spoke out against the governor and that's how Thoreau and Kaepernick are
At the start of the 2016 NFL preseason, Colin Kaepernick, quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, decided to take a seat during the National Anthem. His gesture during the first preseason game went unnoticed until the third preseason game. Many Americans disapproved and were very angry with him because America thinks sitting during the National Anthem is disrespectful to our military and our Nation. In an interview,32 Kaepernick said he was doing this because there is too much racial discrimination and police brutality against blacks. By the last preseason game, Kaepernick was kneeling instead of sitting because he respects the former and current military and he thought sitting was too disrespectful against the military. As the NFL season continues, so does Kaepernick's protest. Americans should be for the National Anthem Protest because the protest is fighting racial discrimination and police brutality.
In the sports article, “49ers fans burn jerseys over player’s refusal to stand during anthem”, Washington Post states that a gesture from the 49ers quarterback prompted protests by San Francisco 49ers fans. Colin Kaepernick does not want to stand up for the flag ever again because of a country that subdues black people and people of color. People are supporting the refusal to stand during the anthem and others are disowning this cause. Secondly, the sports article states that his protests with America is making people think twice for what they truly believe in. Moreover, the article claims how a former teammate of Kaepernick is being supportive of his choices and the right to press his statement to the country. The author concludes by us people
On August 26, 2016 Colin Kaepernick “Took a stand” by not standing during the National Anthem before the preseason game. This angered many fans, including African American fans. Many videos have gone viral, of fans burning Kaepernick's jersey. In one video the man was recorded saying, “if you don't love our country, get the [] out of it. You should never play another down in the NFL. Move to Canada." Although, Kaepernick broke no rules, Officials are still thinking about penalizing him. Kaepernick says that he will not honor a flag for a country that oppresses people of color. Many people wonder how he knows what it is like to be oppressed making 126 million dollars a year.” Another fact that has angered fans is that Kaepernick was adopted
Kaepernick's social media accounts have recently been centered on forwarding discussions on topics like race, religion, and politics. This brings out the worst in people as they hassle to prove they are right. He has been engaging debates about how Ryan Lochte got it easy when he shouldn't have and that it wasn't fair. Last month Kaepernick heated the debate when he wore socks during team practice representing police officers as pigs. He defended the socks saying the "rogue cops that are allowed to hold positions in police departments" are putting both community and "cops that have the right intentions" in danger.
One day in a NFL preseason game Colin Kaepernick decided to take a kneel during the National Anthem and it created a national controversy. Many respected people agree with what he did and I agree too he made a statement for what he believed in. Many athletes before him made these kinds of statements for a cause that they believed in.
There are far more supporters of this protest than there are opposed to it. Omaha Nebraska’s Michael Rose-Ivey chooses to take a stand by kneeling along with Kaepernick because he “felt the duty to speak out for racial injustice” (Rose-Ivey). Many college, and even high school athletes have chosen to hold this peaceful protest. However, only a small amount of fans are against this protest. “While you may disagree with the method, these reactions further underscore the need for this protest and gives us just a small glimpse into the persistent problem of racism in this country and the divisive mentality of some Americans” (Rose-Ivey). Michael Rose_Ivey received so much hatred from around the world. He received death threats, judgment from teammates, and even a statement from the govern
Reactions to this situation have certainly been mixed. Some of the high school coaches, and even NFL coaches, were not standing for these protests and made it very clear that if players took a knee during the national anthem, they would no longer be on the team. On the opposite side of the spectrum, there were veterans that spoke out about how they were proud of Kaepernick for taking such a stand - due to the fact that these veterans fought in order for him to have the right to do such a thing.
Colin Kaepernick, a National Football League quarterback, kneeled during the playing of the National Anthem as others stood in the respect of the United States flag. American soldiers fight and die to defend our country and for citizens to be able to speak freely. Kaepernick was showing no respect for the ones who fight for him. Many NFL viewers lost respect for him as he tried to gain attention for the Black Lives Matter movement. He was trying to gain respect from viewers toward black people but in actuality not only was he directing our country he was disrespecting all citizens including black people. Why would an individual want to follow someone who’s reasons are misleading and advertised falsely? The article, “O’er the ramparts we watched
