Colin Kaepernick's Fight Against Racism

Decent Essays

San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, has immersed himself into a world of controversy by refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem in protest of wrong-doings against African Americans and other minorities in the United States. Kaepernick's statement on this issue, when asked why he was not standing was, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” So naturally, the debate over whether or not Kaepernick’s reasons for kneeling were valid began.

So I'm in the position where I can do that and I'm going to do that for people that can't.”

Another popular reason for people to disagree with Kaepernick’s actions is that they simply do not even believe that the inequality he is protesting actually exists in today’s world. They refuse to admit to themselves that Kaepernick might actually be right, that America might not actually be so perfect, yet. When they hear his protest, they feel uncomfortable due to the current chaotic controversy surrounding the issue of the Black Lives Matter movement.

It is clear that people did not take the time to try and understand the substance of Kaepernick’s message. They lack the courage to ask themselves a difficult question: What if Kaepernick is right? Having that conversation is important. They are bothered by his protest because he has brought the reality of “the outside world” into the world of football. That makes them feel uncomfortable, and they
