To be an athlete, especially one of the three sport variety, is a huge undertaking, as it requires year-round commitment and a passion for hard work. Personally, I have played consistently in three sports since the fifth grade, and I believe this lifelong dedication has paid off for me. It’s impossible to put all of your energy into being an athlete, because while becoming successful in sports is one thing, it is an entirely more important matter to become a successful student. Balancing this can be hard and it is that balance which must be perfected in order to become a good athlete. An athlete to me isn't just someone who straps on their jersey and plays a game, it is a person who is dedicated to a sport on and off the field, and someone who exemplifies the best qualities in their environment. Athletes are idolized by people everywhere, and why is that? Because they're famous or rich or can jump really high? No, I think it’s …show more content…
High school athletes need to be students, and perhaps more difficult need to balance the social life of a teenager. It is stressful at times, but the stress melts away when you're standing at the top of the podium, realizing that everything you've done for this sport has paid off. And past the podiums and the medals you become even more proud when you're standing on the stage of your university accepting your degree and starting a new chapter of life, ready to take on the world. Athletes know what it means to work hard to become the best, and when it comes time to hang up the sports equipment and move on to the real world, athletes will have the resolve to do what is necessary. Because in the end it’s not going to be about the accolades but instead about the time you put into the things that matter. And when you grow up working hard, and develop that great habit of putting everything you have towards your goals, then reaching out towards then won't seem so
In the area of collegiate sports, there have been numerous heated debates about the integrity of many things concerning the NCAA and how it handles legal and ethical issues. Two well renowned scholars tackle this issue in their co-authored book entitled
The world of sports has grown larger than life over the past century, especially in college. Being a collegiate athlete is, without question, the hardest athletic profession in the world. Not only are students devoted to their sport, which requires an obscene amount of time of preparation, but they are also devoted to their school work. And the award they receive for their hard work? Of course there are the great memories, friendships made, “free education”, or national championships, but are theses students receiving their fair share? Should college athletes be paid? It is a question that has been asked, but never truly answered. College athletes should be paid for their work. I even have the perfect system to see
Sports are not for everybody, not only because of talent level, but because a certain mindset is to be had to be successful at any sport. A commitment is made. Forty hours of practice a week, the average amount of time spent practicing for football players, all for a one hour game, the average time of one game of college football, takes dedication. That is not even counting the time spent icing, resting, and studying the playbook or film, not to mention the school work to be kept up with for college and high school students. Most athletes have become used to the grind and juggling three or four time consuming activities all at one time while being successful at each. Waking up at the break of dawn, following a schedule, and suffering consequences when a bad choice is made creates character and discipline that is often needed for many little league, high school, and college athletes. The most important non tangible thing sports teach anyone is how to get back up after falling, how to get knocked down but get right back up and keep going, how to move on from failure and overcome it, focusing on the next important part of life. These skills of determination and courage taught through sports are essential for being successful in any part of life and are hard to come by anywhere
I think it would great for college athletes in the NCAA football video game to receive compensation from the game because the colleges shouldn’t be the only ones benefiting from the game. There are athletes that get injured playing college football and their careers are done, so I feel it would nice for athletes to receive something from playing the game of football, especially after college. If college athletes that don’t make it professionally in a sport could receive compensation for their time playing sports, it would create opportunities for them to start businesses and become involved in other careers.
There has been a long standing controversy over college athletes and their ability to be protected by the NCAA, which is the organization that governs college athletes. In particular college athletes believe that they are being taken advantage of by the colleges for the entertainment they provide. The National Collegiate Athletic Association makes about $871. 6 million per year. College athletes do not receive any of this money directly. The NCAA has the authority to say how many athletic scholarships are available for each sport in Division I and Division II schools. These scholarships are quoted as being “miniscule” and barely enough to cover the full tuition of the various schools. So, the athletes are the ones that pay the price;
The main idea of this paper is to introduce you to what really happens as a high school athlete and the things you learn along the way. High school sports is way more than just playing the sport, it shows you what you are really made of and how to handle problems life is going to throw at you. The adversity you face as an athlete carries over to real world problems and you have been there and done that, so handling adversity is second nature. This information comes from all my coaches, myself and Friday Night Lights. I feel I have already grown as a person by competing in athletics and calling other people my brothers. Not only does high school athletics help you in the long run, but it helps you with problems you have now.
There are several up and downsides of being a student athlete but, the feeling of being apart of a team and doing something you love is the ultimate reward. According to the NCAA, “More than 460,000 NCAA student-athletes – more than ever before – compete in 24 sports every year” (“Student-Athletes”). Being a student athlete you learn how to be a part of a team as well as developing leadership qualities. Throughout your entire high school and or college athletic career, you’re creating everlasting friendships and memories with teammates and coaches. Being a student-athlete, your main priority is school but, with a busy and jammed packed schedule it can get a little overwhelming. With a busy schedule, student athletes have no choice other than to manage their time wisely. Along with learning time efficiency, participating in sport teaches you to be goal oriented. When you’re involved in sports, you push yourself physically and emotionally. You begin to set goals to better not only for yourself, but to better your team as well. Ultimately, there are several benefits of
People are always talking about how college athletes should stay in college until they receive their degree and then if they are lucky enough to get drafted into the pros, they can pursue that dream. College athletes disagree; they are looking for the fastest way out of college because they aren’t getting paid for their performances and academic hardships. College athletes are on a strict schedule daily with their workouts and training and then have to find time to study at the end of the day. They go through so much everyday and yet, everyone else around them is being compensated just not them. Ben Simmons, who was the first overall pick in the 2016 draft to the Philadelphia 76ers, said after his college years were behind him, “Everyone gets
Being a college athlete, and having many friends in the same position, it brings to my attention how the afamed lifestyle often gets misunderstood. Collegiate athletes do not get as much recognition for the amount of hard work they put in daily. They’ve always been looked at as “they have it easy” but from research, and first hand experience, being a college athlete is much more strenuous than what it appears. I took the time and spoke to another athlete from the University of Los Angeles to get their feedback as well. In order for an athlete to consistently reach peak performances, there are 3 necessities that need to be withheld.
In high school many kids often choose not to participate in extra curricular activities saying that there pointless or that only a certain type of person would do something like play football, or join the chess club. While this type of thinking may get some people through school and through life, can it really be looked at as being a healthy lifestyle? Today sports have proven to be a healthy outlet for students, in dealing with stress in the classroom at home and among their peers.
Being a student athlete has many ups and downs. This means that athletes do not only have to worry about school but also the sport they are in. It takes time and patience to be in sports. I am currently in basketball; I also play football and baseball. It is very stressful at times because of all the games and practices. I love playing sports because it allows me to be able to make friendships with my teammates. With being in three sports, it is very hard to find a way to make money. Some ways I can make money are babysitting and helping my grandma in ways. It takes time and effort in order to be great at something. Just like this class and many others, I have to put time and effort in them. Likewise, in sports I have to be working in the gym when others are not. Sports have brought joy to my life. Throughout my whole life I have been around sports. I have always enjoyed playing three sports, they have made me to be who I am today. The sports I currently play are football, basketball, and baseball. These sports have impacted my life because they have taught me how to be able to respond to difficult situations and also create close bonds with friends.
Sports has become one of the most impactful and influential parts of our culture. Sports has cemented itself as a standard part of society. In fact, taking a look back on myself and coming from an athletic background, growing up my mom would always put me in a variety of sports. When I reached high school age something that was always drilled into me by my coaches was the aspect of hard work. During my high school sporting career there was a multitude of setbacks and failures Coach Hosner who was my coach at the time, would always give me some sort of motivational snippet on hard work, and with it how anything could be accomplished. However, in today’s professional sports world there
Athletes teach teens how to overcome obstacles and persevere against anything. Not many people have gone through as much adversity as athletes, which shows that each one of them has a great attitude and mentality to overcome anything. This once again proves that athletes have the power to teach teens that they can achieve anything that they desire, because athletes themselves would not be as successful as they are if they just quit and gave up. Since athletes have so much power, they can influence millions of teens at once. Professional athletes are some of the greatest role models in America.
Being in an American school begins a student’s search to find who they are considered in the system. From a nerd to a punk, many academic ties are also involved with this identity. The one group of students who get the most academic ties with his or her extra-curricular activity is the “jock”. As having the title as a jock, a child learns that many people look at someone who plays football or basketball doesn’t have the ability to learn as fast or as well as someone who just studies and doesn’t have extra-curricular activities. Studying this topic is not as stressed as it should be, even when many programs claim to get more physical activity in students. The articles that have been reviewed were testing whether the athlete gets good grades
Sports are more than just an opportunity to go outside and burn off some energy. They are more than just a way to get in shape and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Athletics are a metaphor for life that not only teaches players about the game, but helps them discover important aspects about themselves. At a young age, I did not realize all the beneficial life lessons that the world of sports has taught me, but as I experience high school athletics, I cherish the advice the game shares with me.
