Imagine a chaotic free for all with near impossible upsets and heartbreaks similar to march madness but for college football. Many college football athletes rely on scholarships to further their education money earned from sports post season tournaments but even more money could be earned for student athletes. Recently the college postseason system switched from a BCS bowl system to 4 team college football playoff system to prove who is the best college football team but still hasn’t resolved the issue of teams feeling left out of the chance to be the national champion for college football. People are still not satisfied with the current playoff system because they don’t want to wait all year to watch a lackluster total of three games to …show more content…
College teams who may be the best team in country won’t ever get the chance to prove it and lost out on millions of dollars. Suggs suggests, "It's widely assumed that the old system, the BCS, would never have pitted Oregon and Ohio State to play for a national championship. It's likely that defending national champion Florida State, who was undefeated in the regular season, would have played Southeastern Conference champion Alabama if the BCS was still in place." In 2014 if the BCS system was implemented the number three and four seed would never had the chance to play for the national championship due the number one and two being higher ranked on the polls even though they weren’t as talented as the teams below them. The thirteen member committee has to decide, which of the nation's top teams get compete for the national championship but selecting the top four teams is borderline biased and brews controversial decisions that leaves teams robbed of their spot in the playoffs. TCU in two thousand fourteen was ranked third in the nation and had just completed their season with a fifty five to three victory but lost their spot in the playoffs dropping from third to sixth due to the committee believing two other teams were better but all three had similar results in the final week of play (Culpepper). TCU a highly ranked team that did all it could do to …show more content…
Student athletes in college football need the format for the post season to be expanded in order to help further their education. Fans and coaches of college football would rather see a larger playoff system for college football put into to place to generate more interest and overall make the postseason more entertaining. A grave injustice is dealt to teams stripping them of a once in a lifetime opportunity to play for a national championship because of broken four team playoff system. Money one of the most important things driving athletes, coaches and the college postseason can be increased by expanding the playoff format. The current college football playoff system doesn’t leave something to be desired it leaves a something to be deserved a higher education for student athletes, entertainment for fans, money for students and coaches and justification for teams who deserve a chance to play for the national
With college basketball and football originating in the 1800’s, the game has had much time to adapt. Over the years, the sports have become more and more popular, gaining a bigger fan base, which has resulted in substantial profits from the sale of merchandise representing the teams and players. There is one thing that has not changed; all of the athletes are still not being paid. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, or NCAA, is an organization that regulates most aspects of
In his article “The Shame of College Sports,” Taylor Branch (2011) describes how universities are focused on advancing and receiving money from major athletics and having star athletes, but how the universities are not caring for the “student athlete.” The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has made college sports into an unmerited business. However, as years progress more athletes are getting smart and are taking the NCAA to court. The more students that challenges the rules by the NCAA and take them to court, the secrets and undermining values of the NCAA come out and the closer the NCAA comes to an end.
Many men go to work every single day, making big money for other people, and are the best at what they do in the country, yet they still do not get a chance to get a raise or promotion. The College Football Playoffs (CFP) decides the best college football team in the nation and declares an outright National Champion. The #4 Ohio State Buckeyes were crowned National Champions of the first ever College Football Playoffs and almost did not even get into the playoff. Even though there is a better system in place than the Bowl Championship Series, the CFP has imperfections. The playoff should be expanded to 8 teams to give a better idea of who the best team in the nation is that year, because often times some
The college football national championship is the highest level in the United States. For years, two of the top rank team in the polls play for national championship. It was that way until 2014 when the NCAA decides to have a committee of 13 to choose the four best team to play in the first-ever playoff. Winners of the top five power conference championship would be invited to play in the playoff. But only four teams would be pick leave one conference out of the playoffs for the national championship. With the win, your conference championship has been a big part of who would play in the playoffs, until 2017 when Ohio State won their conference but would be left out and not able to play for national
It is mid-February and for college athletes and fans everywhere that means that the College Football “Bowl” season is over and “March Madness” is around the corner. The “Bowl” Season is a series of college football games from the elite teams, sponsored by various corporations and “March Madness” is a 68 team single elimination tournament to decide who the best team in college basketball is. For the students involved they get a chance to have their legacy live on forever and for some it is a chance to show professional teams they have what it takes to compete on the next level, but for the universities it is a chance to bring in millions of dollars in revenue. As a student-athlete, and a volunteer basketball coach, I believe that it is unfair that student athletes across the country have decided to give their lives to these sports in hopes that they get lucky and “win the lottery” by making in into professional sports. I believe that student athletes have earned the right to be compensated for their hard work, dedication and commitment to these universities across the country.
Many student-athletes can have their whole career, their passion, and love of their respected sport taken away from them with just 1 play. The student-athletes are representing their respective school and making the school more popular and more students will want to enroll there and the student-athletes are making the NCAA millions of dollars, but the NCAA will not give the student-athletes just a little allowance because it will “ruin the integrity of college sports”. Student athletes-athletes should get paid because students could get hurt in one play, the NCAA makes millions of dollars on the the players, and it will make the players do smarter things with their money.
College athletics are becoming more like the professional leagues except for one big issue, money. Student athletes bring in a vast amount of revenue for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) not to mention recognition and notoriety regarding the athlete’s university. However, the debate continues as to whether student athletes should or should not receive payment for playing college sports.
College football rules many regions of the United States of America, especially in the southern regions. Alumni of the certain colleges and other supporters pack respective stadiums every Saturday and passionately cheer for their teams in an attempt to ensure victory. Undoubtedly, there are few traditions in the United States that compare to College Football. The sport ensures that family members have something to relate to, brings communities much closer, and creates great moments shared around the country. Perhaps most importantly, there is one more thing that college football does quite well. The sport regularly and consistently creates the interest and demand required in order to make a considerable profit. However, the student athletes most responsible for the increased revenue enjoyed by the respective Universities around this country do not receive any of the money, despite the fact that they are the ones most important to the financial inflow. Many people believe that it is unjust to not financially reward the people most responsible for making the team money, and that college football players should be adequately compensated for their performances on the gridiron.
With the annual debate revived by fans and sportswriters, the involvement of the federal government, and the financial benefit that bowl games offer schools, the issue of wheatear to replace the Bowl Championship Series with a playoff system continues to be one of the most discussed aspects of college football. Most people agree the Bowl Championship Series should be replaced by a playoffs, however there are a few who believe otherwise. The Bowl Championship Series works, and college football has never been more successful, thrilling, popular, or more enjoyable than ever. The Bowl Championship Series is fairer, safer and more effective than a playoffs.
Statistics from the Gallup poll stated that, “85% of college football fans supported a change to a playoff system of some kind. 69% of fans surveyed preferred the idea of a playoff tournament involving the top four, eight, or 16 teams to replace bowl games while 16% preferred a one-game playoff between the top teams emerging from the post-season bowl games.” The way that the sport runs is from the money the teams make from their fans. If the fans get what they want, more people will come to the games, and more money will be
There are many issues with today’s college football system. The NCAA is a multi-billion dollar industry, and that is part of the reason why the system is so corrupt. The NCAA makes many of their decisions based off of personal gain and are partly to blame for the predictability of College Football in the last few years. Recently in the media, these issues have been dissected and addressed from many different views. Issues including, star players sitting out of bowl games, coaches leaving early and serious injuries such as concussions.
The “contradiction at the heart of big-time college football,” as Michael Oriard describes it, is the competing demands of marketing and education. The 1890s proved to university administrators that there was an enormous market for collegiate football, which postulated opportunities for university building. Since this ubiquitous realization, there has coincided this blatant, yet unchanging contradiction that academic institutions are permitted to profit off of the services provided by its student-athletes while the athletes must idly accept that they are amateurs, donating their efforts to their respective schools. The schools then direct this revenue toward strengthening their athletic departments, and thus continues this seemingly endless growth of big-time college sports, all while athletes remain uncompensated and academics continue to take a backseat.
Saturdays in the fall bring together millions of people to celebrate college football, a ritual that bonds the community in stadiums and in living rooms across America. This American sport takes a heavy financial toll in colleges everywhere. Just one in four colleges across America make money on their football team (mostly large division I schools). College teams spend millions of dollars stockpiling athletes and struggle to keep pace with rivals. With college football teams soaking up most of the money for transportation, uniforms, and football equipment, the women's teams are having to deal with cut scholarships and women's sporting events. That money drain is at the heart of debate
The College Football Playoffs are ruining team’s season. Take Baylor and TCU for example. In 2014, Baylor and TCU were one-loss teams with Baylor winning the head to head game against TCU by three points. They were named co-champions of the Big 12, even though the slogan is “one true champion.” Those two teams were ranked five and six, respectively, in the last ranking before “Bowl Day”, a day where all the teams who are bowl-eligible find out what team they will be facing against and where. When the fourth and final spot of the College Football Playoff was announced, both teams sat in shock! Ohio State, who was sitting at seventh place, under both teams, jumped up to fourth to snag the remaining spot! Jeff Long said the reason Ohio State jumped
From the first two national champions, Rutgers and Princeton, to last year’s debateable Auburn national championship winning team, college football has always had difficulties deciding national champions. The BCS National Championship game was thought to give a less prejudice opinion on which teams play in the championship game than humans did. However, it has stimulated more controversy in college sports than Cal-Stanford “The Play.” The problem with the BCS teams is, it chooses two teams that are based on profit, popularity, and record. The BCS is in need of replacement by a playoff system because with a playoff system college football teams have more of an opportunity to show themselves.
