There is an extensive history empirical power, repeatedly and successfully controlling another state or group of people in order to exploit it economically. In Southeast Asia there were 5 colonial powers; the United Kingdom, France, Dutch, America, and Japan, their primary motives for establishing colonies in the region was to get control of trade routes, to get access to the natural resources and raw materials, and the cheap labor, as well as to establish naval and military bases so that they could amass influence in the region. Prior to World War II, a third of the world 's area was colonized by European colonial powers between the 15th and 19th centuries, and another third of the world 's population were in colonies, dependencies, protectorates, or dominions. In this essay, I will focus on the British and French colonization in Southeast Asia. The British-controlled Burma, most of the Malayan peninsula, and Singapore, which was a strategic port and later became a naval base for the British. Meanwhile, the French controlled the adjoining countries of Vietnamese, Cambodia, and Laos, collectively known as French Indochina. This period of colonization in Southeast Asia brought many changes to the regions society, politics, and the economy. There are no positive effects to imperialism, it is simply wrong. Imperialists were countries who took over other countries for their natural resources or raw materials to advance their own economic and military benefits. Countries around the world are still suffering from the devastating and brutal effects of their country’s imperialism. The French imperialised Vietnam and negatively reconstructed their flourishing economy. The Belgian imperialised the Democratic Republic of Congo brutally murdered their citizens and raped them of their resources and land. However, Imperialists believed they were helping develop primitive countries. Imperialism in many countries begins with the advancement towards economical resources.

While the motives of colonists in the Americas were various- to build a new society, to promote Christianity, to acquire riches, or, as early colonists in New England expressed it, to secure a ‘competencie’ ; they all faced the same challenges of establishing themselves in an alien environment that would require them readjust and respond to new circumstances. Many believe that the nations which were imperial colonizers in the 1700s and 1800s owe reparations to the countries they colonized. Nonetheless, New Imperialism established deep lines of contempt regarding Western power, marked with violence, throughout the world. Therefore, New Imperialism was a paltry act done by the Western world which seems to have produced little benefit.

It is a set of unequal relationships between the colonial power and the colony and often between the colonists and the indigenous population.

The idea of Imperialism has been in use since people had the forces and means of travel to instill their colony. The need to make colonies is driven by an expanding population and a want of foreign resources and land to expand the empire, like in Britain in the 1600’s when they colonized North America for the land ,wood and later their tobacco. In most cases the colony is mistreated by the controlling country and the colony tries to rebel or stop the bad treatment, this usually leads to war or just blatant massacres in the colonies. Although some colonies would prosper and have some optimism towards the controlling country and cooperate and expand and better their country. They title themselves as being superior to all others. Thus, a lot of countries bought into the western ways and believe Westerners to be “demigod”.
