With an aim of understanding whether there are any positive aspects of colonialism, it is imperative to look at what colonialism entails. Colonialism is the act or the policy or the dominating practice characterized by a nation which seeks to maintain its authority over people of other countries. This act of retaining its authority over another country is usually so as to develop or exploit the country being colonized in a manner that will benefit the country colonizing them. In most cases under colonialism, the country being colonized ends up having developments in terms of its economy, religion, education, language and culture among other aspects. Colonialism is a term used to describe the method in which one country uses to acquire vast amounts of land and other resources in another country while taking control of the manner in which operations are carried out in this country.
Some colonialists believed that it was their duty to improve the state of the countries in which they were colonizing by empowering the less educated and poor in the society who would be very useful in gathering more resources for the colonizing country. Colonizing nations believed that the more colonies they had to themselves the more power they yielded amongst their equals as a result of the vast availability of resources including human capital. This can be seen from the scramble for Africa where super powers including Belgium, Spain, England among others; would divide the lands they wanted to
There is an extensive history empirical power, repeatedly and successfully controlling another state or group of people in order to exploit it economically. In Southeast Asia there were 5 colonial powers; the United Kingdom, France, Dutch, America, and Japan, their primary motives for establishing colonies in the region was to get control of trade routes, to get access to the natural resources and raw materials, and the cheap labor, as well as to establish naval and military bases so that they could amass influence in the region. Prior to World War II, a third of the world 's area was colonized by European colonial powers between the 15th and 19th centuries, and another third of the world 's population were in colonies, dependencies, protectorates, or dominions. In this essay, I will focus on the British and French colonization in Southeast Asia. The British-controlled Burma, most of the Malayan peninsula, and Singapore, which was a strategic port and later became a naval base for the British. Meanwhile, the French controlled the adjoining countries of Vietnamese, Cambodia, and Laos, collectively known as French Indochina. This period of colonization in Southeast Asia brought many changes to the regions society, politics, and the economy. For instance, both colonial powers introduced political changes such as introducing a centralized form of government and changes to the justice systems in many of the colonized countries. There were also social impacts resulting from the
There are no positive effects to imperialism, it is simply wrong. Imperialists were countries who took over other countries for their natural resources or raw materials to advance their own economic and military benefits. Countries around the world are still suffering from the devastating and brutal effects of their country’s imperialism. The French imperialised Vietnam and negatively reconstructed their flourishing economy. The Belgian imperialised the Democratic Republic of Congo brutally murdered their citizens and raped them of their resources and land. However, Imperialists believed they were helping develop primitive countries. Imperialism in many countries begins with the advancement towards economical resources.
While the motives of colonists in the Americas were various- to build a new society, to promote Christianity, to acquire riches, or, as early colonists in New England expressed it, to secure a ‘competencie’ ; they all faced the same challenges of establishing themselves in an alien environment that would require them readjust and respond to new circumstances. It would be justifiable to submit that the main consequences of colonialism were largely detrimental for the native population. The colonisation of the Americas throughout the early modern period resulted in the decimation of the native population as they increasingly lost their traditional lands to white settlers. This can be attributed to
There was a great question asked by numerous individuals in the eighteenth century with what happens to people’s lives when their country is a colony of another country. This was very important to Americans when they were being ruled by Great Britain, and even to this day it remains important when countries find themselves controlled by more powerful outsiders. But what is colonialism? Colonialism occurs when one nation takes control of another. Kenya’s experience as a colony of Great Britain gives us more of an idea of what being colonized meant both to the people being controlled and to those who control them. Although it seems hard to believe, Kenya was created by the Europeans and generally this had a positive on effect on Kenyans because it began development.
Imperialism is described in The American history as a “The quest for colonial empires”. This was something new for the newly developed country, The request for more natural resources was at its peak, with countries like Britain, Germany who have practised imperialism and has succeeded in expanding its power and influence the United State was more than eager to get into this river that seems to cough out silver and gold. At first, most Americans viewed this as a positive Expansion because it will help spread the American way of life such as democracy. However, this idea was not fully explored by the Americans, they headed into a battlefield with weapons and crafty strategy, but without knowledge of what the war is about and a possible side effect on not just the U.S. Do Americans in today's worldwide imperialism as a positive idea or negative?. Imperialism is viewed by many an immoral act even if its initial reason was thoughtful, suppression of the American way of life and the after effect is a stain on the nation that way never be wiped out.
Classical Colonialism occurs when metropolitan nations fuse new territories or peoples through means which are virtually involuntary such as war, conquest, capture, and additional forms of enforcement and control. (Biauner 1987,150) Classical colonialism is distinguished by economic exploitation, forced entry, and cultural imperialism through the establishment of new institutions and methods of thought. (
Colonialism established power and control over underdeveloped countries, it was a form of domination that had many political, economic and social benefits to the mother country. Many believe that the nations which were imperial colonizers in the 1700s and 1800s owe reparations to the countries they colonized. Numerous countries that were colonized by the Europeans such as Brazil and Nigeria suffered great damage during and after being colonized. People were enslaved and forced to work on plantations, they were forced to give up various elements of their culture and after being freed they went through many social, economic and political changes which later caused chaos. It is justifiable for imperial colonizers to pay reparations to the nations
Imperialism itself, although is sometimes meant to educate, is ultimately formed by an empire’s selfish desire to rule land. This is evident in the New Manifest destiny, carried out by the U.S, the British empire’s rule on several countries, as well as the Britain’s colonization of Africa many years ago that still takes a toll on them today. Although, in some cases imperialism is meant to educate instead of take-over. But, most countries who showed forms of imperialism had economic and strategic interests.
New Imperialism was the third wave of colonial expansion, precursored by Catholic colonialism in the sixteenth century and Mercantile colonialism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As the nineteenth century began, it became apparent that Europe and the United States were the dominant forces of the world, and that they were in control of defining global society. Proponents of New Imperialism believed that modern expansionism was necessary for economic, political, and cultural purposes that would benefit their own country. Furthermore, proponents also believed that colonization would modernize and incite progress in the civilizations outside of Europe and the United States. Nonetheless, New Imperialism established deep lines of contempt regarding Western power, marked with violence, throughout the world. Therefore, New Imperialism was a paltry act done by the Western world which seems to have produced little benefit.
Colonialism is the establishment, exploitation, maintenance, acquisition, and expansion of colony in one territory by a political power from another territory. It is a set of unequal relationships between the colonial power and the colony and often between the colonists and the indigenous population.
The idea of Imperialism has been in use since people had the forces and means of travel to instill their colony. The need to make colonies is driven by an expanding population and a want of foreign resources and land to expand the empire, like in Britain in the 1600’s when they colonized North America for the land ,wood and later their tobacco. In most cases the colony is mistreated by the controlling country and the colony tries to rebel or stop the bad treatment, this usually leads to war or just blatant massacres in the colonies. Although some colonies would prosper and have some optimism towards the controlling country and cooperate and expand and better their country. The responses of the native people to European colonist were mostly negative due to the harsh treatment and disregard of them and
Colonialism was motivated by monarchs who desired to settle on new land. The Age of Discovery had pushed countries to build trading posts or conquer land, but this was simply for trade. Once explorers discovered new lands that seemed vastly uninhabited, mother countries changed their strategies.
If prompted with the question what is colonization and or how did Europe and America colonize different countries and peoples the answer might be as simple as: it was the process of taking land from other countries and pushing to change the peoples of those countries towards western ways. This answer is to simple, a lot of people do not know the motives behind colonizing another country. Even though the motives behind colonizing another country depend on the time and location of the colonizing, Europe and America have always set above every other country around the world. They title themselves as being superior to all others. Thus, a lot of countries bought into the western ways and believe Westerners to be “demigod”. In Michael Adas essay, Contested Hegemony: The Great War and the Afro-Asian Assault on the Civilizing-Mission, even though the focus is on the ups and downs of colonization in Asia and Africa. The essay looks at the motives behind colonizing these peoples, why some bought into the idea and how World War One changed everything for Europe, Asia and Africa in terms of colonization.
Due to the influence of Marxist principles, there is some level of confusion in the usage of the terms imperialism and colonialism. This is due to the similarities of their practice, ending in an interchangeably usage of both terms. First, both imperialism and colonialism involve political and economic involvement over a particular territory. However, in the past colonies and empires deferred drastically. colonialism practices the relocation of population to a new territory, while maintaining political adherence to their country. This implies a political control over a territory and a loss of its sovereignty, which involves the suppression of individuals. Referring to the extension of sovereignty over a territory establishing political control over it as a source of power. “The term colony comes from the Latin word
Colonialism, which was a major cause of the north-south gap that occurred in the period following the Second World War, is the takeover by a nation of foreign territories; making them part of it to aid its own economical, social and political structures. The mother countries succeed in doing that by using the colony’s natural resources, money savings, and their lands, which leads the colony to rely on the mother country and therefore, leaving the country underdeveloped. Hence, the world wide scramble for colonies, particularly in the late 19th – early 20th century, had a tremendous negative effect on the economic, social, and political structures of indigenous, non-industrialized peoples.
