This article really gives you the gist of common misused words that many individuals like myself might’ve struggle throughout the past, or ever now. I believe that this article really tells you that no one is perfect because most people all around the world at least once in their lifetime have made a mistake, inputting an incorrect word without even noticing. This is all about learning and adapting to these words as we use them on a daily basis. Some words just sound so similar that anyone can get confused and misuse them in any writing assignment. A problem that we have now is our technology, we all rely on our technology and many of us don’t revise our assignment because we think that the computer spell check won’t catch these errors! Just
The year 2015 has been a real learning experience, with new knowledge around every corner. I find myself looking back on some of my writing and see how far i've come from what seem like my “primitive” writing days. One of many things i've learned to handle is my spelling
Grammar involved within texting (e.g. leaving out letters) is purposeful and does not deter from an individual’s ability to spell and identify errors within the standard English language. A study conducted by Powell and Dixon (2011) in which participants undertook a spelling tests of 30 words twice, before and after a period of exposure provides evidence for this assertion. Those who were exposed to misspellings of the words were more likely to misspell the word themselves upon retaking the text. Those who were exposed to “textisms” i.e. abbreviated versions performed either just as well or better.
From generations to generation grammar has been a big part of the English language. It has also changed since it first develops. From texting complete sentences like “See you later” to “C U l8r” or from using the spelling two and using the number form of it to replace that. Using slang word such as those can ruin a person’s reputation. In the stories of The Joy of Texting by Lynne Truss and I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why. by Kyle Wiens, both show some main similarities for it uses of correct grammar and why it should be that way. Grammar can make or break a person and could cost serious chances in life.

Error is something that is prominent in our daily lives. It is a natural occurrence from which we as humans tend to learn from. When the question of error in writing is provoked, things are not as simple given the fact that the, “Lack of clarity about errors contradicts what is perhaps the most common belief about error in writing, namely, that errors are simply “wrong”(Lu & Horner 189). Min-Zhan Lu and Bruce Horner are English professors at the University of Louisville, who are also co-authors of Writing Conventions. In this textbook, Lu and Horner define error from many different perspectives.Throughout the chapter pertaining to error, there is supporting evidence to back up each position on what the definition of error is. In the writing,
Once students’ starts memorizing different phrases and shorter terms for words, they begin to make it a habit. A very different side of the spectrum is that the author claims that she rarely ever used abbreviations. She also knew that using abbreviations are considered unacceptable in writing and that it would make her look unintelligent. It seems odd that teachers claim that students do not realize their grammar mistakes before the students turn in their work. In Jacquie Ream's newspaper article, she insisted that texting destroys kids writing style.
As inexperienced writers, it can be easy for students to feel like they need to overcompensate to their professors by using overly extravagant words. In today’s society, thesauruses are available at just a right click in Microsoft Word, so it becomes extremely tempting for students to switch common, “simple” words for words that seem more “sophisticated” so they can sound smart and like they understand the topic more. Even though some “sophisticated” words are more specific and can work more efficiently on many occasions, students need to be aware of their audience and what level to accommodate their
It was very to easy to have small mistakes in my paper. I use a couple grammar check websites to help me find any errors in my summary paper. I know that I have bad grammar so I use
4.Identify the three words or phrases that you are most likely to misuse. For each of these words/phrases, write a pair of sentences in which the first sentence misuses the word/phrase and the second sentence corrects the first.
Throughout your paper I did find a few grammatical, and spelling error. I will try my best to include as many as I found. I will also include the sentence below my comment, so that you have a better understanding of what I am pointing out.
People don’t know how to spell anymore! This skill is becoming rarer in America. “The Country’s Going Through A Rough Spell” by Bob Greene, is about how more and more Americans don’t know how to spell correctly. People don’t think they need to know how to do it, or that it is too hard to bother with. Bob Greene is dismayed by how many people don't know how to spell. Every letter he reads has some misspelling. Letters from students, businessmen, executives, secretaries and even teachers have misspellings. Furthermore, people are too lazy to look up the word they don't know how to spell. It’s a simple step to take, but people aren’t taking it. That’s the saddest part about the Americans’ disability to spell. Misspelling words shows a lack of
The book How to Not Write Bad: The Most Common Writing Problems and the Best Ways to Avoid Them, by Ben Yagoda, focuses on teaching readers how to eliminate errors in their writing. To engage the readers, the author uses examples from his own students’ writing. By showing other students’ mistakes, Yagoda creates a mood of reassurance for the readers and tells his audience that everyone can make grammatical errors. This allows him to easily touch on a range of areas with an attentive audience. The topics are diverse with interesting topic titles, which help spark the reader’s interest. For example, Yagoda titles the section “,” rather than spelling “comma” in Punctuation (40). Using the punctuation symbol instead of the name is unusual and therefore
Out of all the words that start with an F, fuck is the only word that is considered the “F word”. There are many origins of this word, some may appear to be true due to the way we use this word in context today, but don’t be fooled, quite a few origins of this word are actually false. Fuck has taken place of many words throughout the years, but this generation is breaking tradition. I think this word will be around for a long time and sooner or later it will be part of our daily vocabulary. A study on Facebook shows that within three days, the word fuck is used over 9.5 million times, and the numbers are growing more and more each day. (“The Most Popular Swear Words on Facebook”)
I am a lousy speller. Luckily I complete all of my assignments on a computer that has spell check. That being said, my number one pet peeve is when people communicate using shortened words and acronyms. LOL, OMG, BRB, pleez, wut, and so on. I’m not sure why it bothers me but when I see or hear someone using them I cringe. As far as grammar goofs, I am guilty of many! Even as I write this I feel insecure about my grammar. Should there be a comma?? Oh no, more passive voice! There are so many rules! This chapter may become my new best friend.
Comment: In order to make the student aware of his mistake in grammar, I repeat the mistake with rising intonation and stress on the mistaken word so that he can pay attention to it and correct themselves immediately. Here I tried to get students to self-correct with echo correct clearly and effectively and I got instant expected feedback.
