There seems to be a misconception when it comes to communication, trust and listening; most people assume these are qualities people are born with and never need to learn. The truth is these are extremely important qualities which can ultimately benefits us not only in the workplace but also in our personal lives. These skills can give us the opportunities necessary to become more self-aware of our perceptions, values, and emotions which can open the doors to better opportunities. This course has allowed me the opportunity to grow and become a better colleague, employee and spouse by teaching me better forms of communication, and listening skills. Once we can learn to listen to those around us we can become more self-aware of our actions so
Interested work as a communication specialist for organizations and learning from this course will help me be prepared to face the challenges at workplace.
Reflect on what you have learned in this course and discuss how it might influence your work as a professional
To be successful, you must be able to get a point across quickly and you must be able to do so in a way that you sound credible to your audience. This course fits in with my career goals because as a civil engineer designing bridges, I will have to communicate on a daily basis with my fellow employees, employers and clients. I have seen this in my internship with a civil engineering consulting firm, where the employees are constantly communicating with one another and their clients every
My goal was fulfilled by taking this class HD 341 Communication for Empowerment. I learned to communicate more effectively and confidently. I was authentically engaged in learning and taking risks with the course assignments and classmates. This course helped me in understanding my own communication when doing the Response & Reactions papers and the weekly discussions. I did a lot of self-reflection about my interpersonal communication and the communication skills that I acquired when I was young that influence the effectiveness of my communication. From self-reflection, I gain the knowledge and skills to work toward positive interactions with others. After taking this class, I have a new perspectives, open-mindedness, seeing things from the
As our goal with collateral was to make the most impact, it was important for us to understand our audience and their tastes. For instance, information on program pamphlets needed to contain appropriate information. Length was also a key control factor in all my work. Since our events are designed to be a light and fun experience, the vibe had to match the writing we produced. Hence, at least for us, less was more. In addition, the class that has added the most value to my experience has been Teamwork and Negotiations. There are so many aspects to cooperation one cannot fully learn through reading a textbook. Working for a semester on multiple projects with the focus of developing a strong team has been phenomenal in learning the soft skills required to be an effective follower and leader. Humans are complicated beings. There is rarely an isolated causal relationship. Knowing there is not just one factor but a combination has made me a better listener and improved my intuitiveness. Additionally, it has helped me stop stereotyping people. As a result, the coursework has equipped me with transferable skills required of any typical worker who is required to work well both independently and in
I enjoyed reading your post. As classmates, it is interesting to read about the level of awareness this course has provided, what we have learned and how will we apply it to our lives, moving forward. I think it is great that you have recognized the areas you wanted to improve and you are working towards incorporating those elements in future classes and at work. I have learned several, important interpersonal communication skills in this class but self disclosure, is the most important communication skill I have learned because it will help me build on my professional and personal relationships. Self disclosure means making self known to others, letting others know what you think, feel and want. It is revealing personal information to another that results in an enhanced and trusting personal or business relationship. (DeJanasz, S., Dowd, K., & Schneider, B. 2015 p. 30). For the most part, I believe, I am a good
The benefits of learning proper communication skills and using the advice mentioned in the video is that I will have ample opportunity to practice and hone these abilities. They will allow me to stand out from my peers both in school and in my personal/professional life (Bethel University, n.d.). In the end, proper communication skills are needed to further my career path in life and will open up more opportunities for me in the long
The concept of course 15 module eight that I found most important is active listening. According to course 15 active listening consists of several techniques. These techniques include encouragements, paraphrasing, emotional labeling, open ended questions, I messages, mirroring, and effective pauses. By using these techniques you encourage positive communication
I must admit that I have always looked at this type of course as being a complete waste of time. After taking the Learning Connections Inventory, I've discovered that I'm a Dynamic Learner according to the results of the questionnaire. It's totally shed some light on the how, what, when and why of my success and failures in my educational as well as personal and professional life.
Over this summer course I have learned a lot about communication. I learned how significant nonverbal and verbal communication is, along with listening. I never fully understood how big communication is in our daily lives. I now realize that it is a huge aspect of how we continue in our lives. This course has showed me different levels of communication.
For 15 years, I have experienced the people closest to me tell me I cannot accomplish my educational goal because they were afraid to overcome their fears. My biggest fear is not successfully completing my doctoral journey. However, I am determined to not allow others’ or life’s obstacles to hinder me from succeeding in both my doctoral program or professional goals. The decision to attend Walden University’s DBA program was to further develop my business skill set. As a consultant for a non-profit organization, I could benefit from improving upon my interpersonal skill as an active listener. For example, the importance of how we interpret both the verbal and non-verbal messages sent by others is essential to understanding one another. Enhancing
In general, I have gained a lot knowledge from taking this class. One of the assignment that I have found to be most useful was the perception activity, “3 Sides to Every Story: A Tale of Perception.” It was fascinating to see how often people perceive the world differently than I had. I could practically apply the perception check in my daily life. My first order reality is objective, while my second order reality is subjective. This is where I can ask for clarifications to improve my interpersonal communication. Applying the perception check, I will eliminate most misunderstandings. As an example, a friend of mine tells me that they no longer want to spend time with me on the weekends. I could come up with at least two possible interpretations
is the second part of institution-based trust, and is defined as one’s belief that success is probable because all the factors which assure success i.e. contracts, commitments, guarantees, processes, legal resources, procedures, and regulations, are in place (Shapiro, 1987). This type of trust is referred to as customers’ ideas about certain conditions, such as the security and safety of the mobile environment (McKnight et al., 2002), or technical and legal protection (Tan and Sutherland, 2004) in the context of e-commerce.
What I liked about the course were the discussions boards as I was able to learn other facts beyond my knowledge from other colleagues. It was interactive
There is a significant difference between my perception of communication at the beginning of this course compared to now. Initially, I was aware communication was an important skill people needed to have, but I wasn’t fully aware of the depth of communication. I never realized there were such a variety of behaviors and characteristics that impacted the ability for people to communicate effectively. Once I started completing the self-assessments my perspective was broaden and I gained helpful insight into my own communication strengths and weaknesses. With each self-assessment I truly felt I was getting to know myself better.
