I think if colleges lower their requirements, standards and prices I believe that a lot more percentage of students and families would be in college right now. I don’t understand why it cost so much just to get a piece of paper with your name on it after 6 years. I believe everyone deserves a chance to go to college, some students can’t because they can’t afford it, and so they start working right after high school. I’m happy they made a community college, a cheaper college for adults and students to get their basics done. But, I fell more labeled going to community college. Why is it that we go to community colleges but universities teach the same thing, and you’re both studying for a degree? A quote by Connor McGregor, “There’s no talent
In high school, students have the tendency to think that community college is something that is bad. In “Confessions Of A Girl Who Was ‘Too Smart For Community College’,” Chelsea Fagan talks about how in school, she had a hard time in school with her grades and how her school showed off kids that went to college on a bulletin board. She tried everything to avoid going to a community college. Only for the reason that there was a “stigma” on how community colleges are mostly frowned upon or even laughed at (Fagan). Being rejected from many colleges she then convinced herself that she was too smart to go to a community college. Later on she reluctantly went to community college expecting it to be terrible. She quickly realized that community college was a great place to be. Later on, this gave her opening to go to other places. She closes off with her stating how community college is a great place financially and also a great place to mature. In “Confessions Of A Girl Who Was ‘Too Smart For Community College,’” Chelsea Fagan’s simple structure and casual tone make it easy for a reader to understand her main point, and I agree with her concerns on the reproach of community college, but she never really explained why community college was great other than her thoughts on it being cheaper making her argument a little weak.
This article provides an insightful view into the perceived and real status of community colleges in relation to their university counterparts. Once thought of as a place merely for underachievers to attend for workforce training, Trowbridge points out these institutions now have more to offer. They provide an affordable opportunity for students to complete the same courses that are available at the university for a fraction of the cost. Noting the financial savings in comparison to the traditional university, along with the overall quality of instruction, local community colleges have become a viable alternative for those seeking a college education without the incurring unnecessary amounts of debt.
Do you know any person who just graduated high school and that person does not want to go to college? Many students today make a decision that can change the outcome of their life. By deciding whether to go to college or not? Many high school students don’t want to further their studies because they do not want to be locked up in a small classroom and they just want to start their lives with small jobs they can. What high school students do not know is that going to college can change their lifestyle of living. This is a best thing a student should do to get success because a high school education is good to have but it is not going to get students certain job opportunities. Community colleges give a chance to everyone who wants to follow their dreams to do something. Additionally, the doors are open to everybody with even a low-income person
Community college is a great institution for students to start their educational journey. Especially when they do not have the funds or lack some of the prerequisite that a university would require. Community college was created to serve the community, traditional and non-traditional students with the best higher education and lifetime learning opportunities. The faculty and staff members at a community college is there to provide leadership in education while going above and beyond to recognize the needs of the students and the community by providing excellent educational programs and support services that are available to all who have the opportunity to take advantage of them. “Student services now include recruitment and retention, counseling, student activities, student health, financial aid, academic support, career centers, transfer centers, and supplemental services such as transportation, child care, and services tailored for specific populations of students” (Cohen, Brawer, & Krisker, 2014, pg. 209). My philosophy in fulfilling the role and mission of the community college, is to establish the mission, vision, goals and values to guide all students on their journey to strive to become successful both in school and in today’s economy.
Although 2010 was not by definition, a recession year, it certainly felt like one. The growth of the economy was stifled, unemployment was stagnated at a little less than ten percent and interest rates and inflation were at near depression levels by year’s end. The state of the economy unequivocally influences tax collections and budgets, which in turn determines the financial prosperity of higher education, especially in the public sector. The two main sources of revenue for public colleges and universities are state appropriations and tuition. Generally, as cuts to higher education appropriations occur, campuses respond by boosting tuitions even higher. Yet, regardless of the size of the budget cuts, college and university tuitions
For whom who graduated from high school will continue with their higher education level. Most of students think that if they graduate from college or four years university they will have a chance to work on the professional field rather than minimum wages. It is a good opportunity for whose low income students can make through and receive their college degree. To support my point, in the article “Expanding Community College Access” I agree with the President Obama that, “ASAP, which began in 2007, provides money for books, coaching, tutoring, tuition waivers and transportation. Fifty-seven percent of last year’s graduates finished in three years; compare to the traditional students, where the three-year graduation rate hover around 15 percent.” (Naughton). With the high percentage graduated of ASAP program provides, the state should be agreed that the community college tuition should be waved .
Even though some feel the degree they get into college is worth the debt, the rising cost of college tuition is having an effect on students. Students are forced to choose a community college or a less expensive college, they have
Chapter 1 begins with a question directed to us students on a personal level; it also asks us what we know about writing, basically, college level writing. Furthermore, the book mentions to evoke memories of how were you involved in the aspect of writing. Memories such as friends, classmates, coworkers, past college classes, T.V shows, books etc.
In the article “The Good That Community Colleges Do, Part 1”, author Rob Jenkins discusses the benefits and values of Community College. Recent studies have shown that the value of two-year colleges were hard to predict. In fact, one report shows that the value of a two-year degree is less than that of a high school diploma, while another report shows that most students are receiving a financial return on their degree. While Rob Jenkins believes both reports have valid points and arguments, he states that “so many of the things that community colleges do for their students and communities are difficult to measure empirically” (“The Good That Community Colleges Do, Part 1”).
In today’s generation many hear about the importance of getting a college education. Many believe that getting a certification or degree will lead you on the path to a better future. For a portion of the American population college is helped pay for by various grant and student loans. But what about the portion of Americans that don’t qualify for them? For these Americans college seems so far out of reach. Making community college free for all Americans will be very beneficial to those Americans that don’t get help with paying their tuition. It will also make sure that nobody gets left behind because of their lack of money. Through evidence I will provide good reasoning as to why community college should be provided free to all citizens of the United States.
Throughout my five semesters at Delaware County Community College I have grown beyond all expectations. I never anticipated to become as involved as I did within the Delaware County Community College Community, but because of that I have been blessed with many opportunities that have shaped me into the person I am today. I aim to be as involved within the Neumann Community as I was in the Delaware County Community to not only better myself but to better the college itself. I hope to make an impact as best I can not only through my involvement in extracurricular clubs and activities, but also in the classroom with my fellow classmates.
The purpose of this research paper is to explore the altered missions of community colleges and related impacts on the historical mission of community colleges. The mission of community colleges were intended to serve all individuals with an equal opportunity for higher education access. In this research paper, there will be four guided questions:
Going to community college was not part of the original game plan when deciding where to apply junior year of high school. The original plan was to attend a college I was accepted into in New York city and it seemed as easy as clicking accept until it came to planning out the financial logistics and reality took the upper hand. Almost two years later and I feel the relief of being debt-free but there also lies the lingering feeling of regret. The difficulty lies within having to stay home for two years and a consistent feeling of being held back while watching high school classmates make moving strides toward their desired four-year institution. The inability to relate to my closest friends and feeling less than others led me to have a low
Why is community college the most effective option? The answer to that question is simple. Community colleges provide just as much opportunities as a four year does, but just as a lower price. Price is a very important topic now a days and saving can be very beneficial to one's future. Another example of college price is the two colleges compared. Manuel S. Gonzalez Canche author of the article "Is the Community College a Less Expensive Path toward a Bachelor's Degree? Public 2- and 4-Year Colleges' Impact on Loan Debt", conducts a study to determine the price difference between starting at a two year school versus starting at a four year school. The outcome of the test was that a two year school has less expensive student loans. The study
The American Community Colleges were established in the twentieth century to address the needs of the workforce development (The American Association of Community College, 2015). Moreover, skilled workers were critical to the economic growth and strength of America’s society (American Association of Community College, 2015).
