Community Health

The work and services provided by the State of Florida include services for children and families, such as services concerning adoption, child abuse, children with disabilities, food stamps, and marriage/divorce. They also provide services involving colleges and universities, courts and corrections, environmental and wildlife preservation/protection, healthcare administration, highway patrol and safety, utility regulations, transportation, revenue (taxes), and a host of other areas. In order to pay for all of the services which they provide, Governor Rick Scott has created a budget of $78.4 billion for the state of Florida in the 2015-2016 fiscal year (Scott, 2016, p. 13). This budget also includes the employment of 113,687 people who compromise the total state workforce (Scott, 2016, p. 14).

496,950 people reside in Volusia County (2012). Out of the 67 Florida counties, Volusia ranks 23rd in clinical care. Volusia residents have access to many hospitals and clinics and that number is growing quickly. As of 2005 there were 1016.010 general practitioners per 100,000 people.

As a resident in Fresh Meadows for twenty years, conducting a community health assessment was an opportunity to learn more about the neighborhood. Located in the northeastern section of New York 's Queens County, this small town was first named “Flushing Meadows” before the American Revolution. This was due to large areas of wet meadows that were also partially located in Flushing. Nonetheless, Fresh Meadows has become home to many with its diverse community in cultures and ages, and activities for the local.

In the United States we are very fortunate. For the most part we do not live in fear of disease outbreaks from day to day. Our government along with the Centers for Disease Control and Public Health Departments have managed to have adults and children vaccinated and set up recommendations regarding those vaccinations. Despite all that is done our country allows freedoms. One of these freedoms is to not vaccinate your child from communicable diseases due to personal beliefs. With the worlds populations becoming more mobile, that sets your child up for dangerous encounters; because some countries are not as strict on laws regarding vaccinations and some

Chesterfield County, Virginia has a population of about 328,000 as of January 1, 2014 with 752 people per square mile. There was a 3.6% increase in the population from April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2013. 65.4% of the population is white non-Hispanic, 21.6% are black non-Hispanic, 7.2% are Hispanic, 3.2% are Asian and 2.1% are two or more races. In 2012 there were 3657 births and 1654 deaths in Chesterfield County. They are rated as being safer than 50% of the cities in the US with 41 violent and 1049 crimes against property (Crime rates for Chesterfield, VA, n.d.).

Jacksonville is Florida’s largest city. The population of this city is 821,784. In 1840, Jacksonville only had a population of 350 residents. In 1901, this city hosted the first college football game in Florida. The game produced a crowd of 2,000 people. Jacksonville is located in Duval county. The purpose of this paper is to identify one health problem that is most prevalent in my community. Residential demographic information will be provided. I will use Milio's framework for prevention to analyze this health problem. Then, compare the health problem to Healthy People 2020 national goals. Lastly, I will introduce one long term goal and three short term goals with their interventions.

North Lawndale is one of the 77 community areas in Chicago, located in the western area of the city between South Lawndale, Garfield Park, the Near West Side and Cicero (Steans Family Foundation, 2014).

Florida became United States territory in the year of 1821 and it consisted of just two counties known as Escamba to the West and St. Johns to the East divided by the Suwanee River and all other counties were created from those two original counties. Although Florida was United States territory it wasn’t until the year of 1845 that it became the 27th state. Florida currently has a total of 67 counties. The last county was introduced in 1925 which is Gilchrist County which was named after Florida’s governor Albert W. Gilchrist who served from 1909 to 1913. The population demographic of Miami-Dade County is the most ethnically diverse County in Florida. According to the US Census Bureau (2015), estimates the foreign-born population to be 1,363,163 million in Miami-Dade County. The population is a mix of 78% white (16% non-Hispanic), 65% of the population being Hispanic or Latino, 19% Black (African-American, Haitian and Caribbean) and 3% other (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). The diverse population Miami-Dade has high rates of uninsured, and underinsured, Americans in the country.

Over nineteenth millions of people live in Florida, imagine if all the immigrants that the census can’t count towards the population were added. Florida is also a global leader in international trade, foreign direct investment and has a lot of tourism thanks to Disney and all the theme parks bringing over ninety-eight millions of visitors per year. There are two hundred and eighty-two cities, one hundred and nine towns, and nineteenth villages in Florida.

A community health assessment is a fundamental instrument of public health practice. Its objective is to depict the health of the community, by presenting information on health standing, community health needs, resources, and epidemiologic and other studies of present local health problems. It seeks to recognize target populations that may be at augmented risk of poor health results and to increase a better understanding of their needs, as well as evaluates the larger community surroundings and how it relate to the health of people. It also identifies those areas where better information is desired, particularly information on health differences amid different subpopulations, quality of health care, and the incidence and severity of disabilities in the population. The Community Health Assessment is the foundation for all local public health development, giving the local health component the instance to recognize and network with key community leaders, businesses and concerned residents about health priorities and concerns. This information shapes the foundation of improving the health status of the community by way of a strategic plan (The Municipal Public Health Services Plan Community Health Assessment Guidance and Format, n.d.).
