A meaningful experience in my community placement was learning how to interact with children in various developmental stages. My limited experience working with infants and toddlers, made me apprehensive about being able to engage and communicate with the children in an age appropriate level and manner. The first few days at my placement, I did not feel capable of connecting with the children, rather only building rapport with their parents and caregivers. I had difficulty applying the theoretical development concepts to the real-life child population. Elaborate

It is important to acknowledge that various external factors influence the child’s interaction with new people, including the child’s developmental stage, current mood and temperament. It is unrealistic to expect to be embraced by every single child, particularly when they are very young. The rapport with the caregivers should be the main focus for the health care provider, however, acknowledging the child’s presence is very important. Children are susceptible to being ignored. When interacting with a child, especially for the first time, there are various communication techniques that have been proven to be effective in making them relaxed and comfortable. Utilizing techniques as infant directed talk, smiling while talking, and interacting with them alongside the caregiver are the most effective and beneficial during the interactions. I think my expectations of being able to engage every infant in some form of play was unrealistic. Instead of considering external factors as their level of development, temperament or mood, I thought it was my lack of skills that did not engage
Over the years I have been fortunate enough to have been able to work with both the elderly and young children through my work experiences. I got involved with Age Uk, Bousfield play centre and was invited to a nursing and midwifery taster week. Whilst working at Bousefield Play centre I was able to see that every child is different and has their own way of expressing themselves. This opened my eyes to the fact that within nursing every patient in your care is different and this requires nurses to be able to adapt to each unique individual. To add to this, I was invited to attend a nursing and midwifery taster week, from this I
When looking at children and young people’s development it is important to recognise and respond to concerns to ensure that the child or young person receives the help and assistance needed.
Throughout my years as a childcare practitioner, I have accumulated a wide range of experience working with children aged 3 – 11. However, the majority of my experience is with children aged 3-5. Through
Theories of development and frameworks to support development are incredibly important to us working with children and young people. They help us to understand children, how they react to things/situations, their behaviour and the ways they learn. Different theories and ways of working with children have come together to provide frameworks for children’s care, such as Early year’s foundation stage (EYFS) which is used within all child care settings. This encourages us to work together, help and check the development of babies, children and young people, to keep them healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to
* Babies and young children are vulnerable and very dependent on their parents and carers. Therefore as well as provide and children’s learning and development it is also essential that we support the physical care, keep them safe and meet their nutritional needs.
An explanation of how different approaches to work with children in early years have affected current provision in the UK
Through working with 0-2 year olds it has provided me with opportunities and experience to acknowledge children’s needs by finding ways to communicate through body language. By having opportunities to extend by knowledge via different courses has allowed me to extend my knowledge. Although I have gained a
Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) is a method of teaching that is based on the research about how young children grow and learn and includes standards for high quality care and education for young children. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) established these guidelines more than 20 years ago. Authors Gordon and Browne state, “The DAP approach stresses the need for activity-based learning environments and is based on what we know about children through years of child development research and what we observe of their interests, abilities, and needs” (40). The three core components of DAP are: 1) what is known about child development and learning, 2) what is known about each child, and 3) what is known about social and cultural contexts in which children learn. A DAP classroom is a busy classroom where students are engaged and interacting physically with objects and persons. This classroom is full of materials, activities, and direct interactions that lead the student into active learning. The observations for this report were conducted at the Laredo Community College Camilo Prada Early Child Development Center in the blue classroom.
‘Early years practitioners have a key role to play in working with parents to support their young children. This should include identifying learning needs and responding quickly to any difficulties. Wherever appropriate, practitioners should work together with professionals from other
Communication is very important, not only with the child/ young person but also their parents/ careers. Parents and careers need to be kept updated with everything that happens with their child/children and information that they need to know about the nursery itself. The stronger the relationship between the practioners and the parent/ career the stronger the trust the parents/ careers have with their child/ children in your care.
Nurses and other healthcare professionals have a significant impact on children and young people in Oldham,
This assignment will show what services are available in early year’s settings and for young people to support positive development. It will show what assessments we carry out within my setting and I will also critically analyse agencies that are available for referrals, transitions and safeguarding for children and young people.
Secondly, it is important to consider the strengths of naturalistic observation as a method. This was identified when the child was consistently moving and doing different activities that allowed me to understand how he communicates with other children, how he behaves and what he learns from others. In the play setting the child was able to develop his thinking and according to the Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families (DOH, 2000) through social relationships, the child was encouraged to express his feelings, emotions, which was achieved by the setting creating an enjoyment environment.
Child development is the foundation upon which early childhood practice is based. Because the psychomotor, socioemotional, cognitive, and linguistic developmental domains are inter-related, early childhood professionals in all types of programs (e.g., family child care homes, early childhood education centers) must comprehend both the processes of development and the adult’s role in supporting each child’s growth, development, and learning. The definition of a community can vary by its ' culture and experiences. It is those differences that are the framework for what any given community regards as normal and appropriate when it pertains to parenting practices. These norms set the standards as to when and how parents should seek help from others as well.
