Community Representation In School Sports

To get started, School sports is a need for most students in order to get their mind off school and to have fun. In the text, “Sports Are More Important Than Ever” by Tim O’Shei the author talks about how,

The college student has the attitude “you can cut any team you want, but not mine” or the “I am entitled to play on a college ______ team.” There is no entitlement to be a student-athlete, there is no requirement that a school must offer or support any particular team / sport for students-athletes to participate in competing at the college / university level.

They help bring the school's reputation up from winning games and winning championships. This will help bring the school money and trophies. Since the athletes are helping the school making

Some schools with strong sporting traditions reinforce participation in sport. The sports that students are encouraged to participate in can depend on the school’s history and traditions, the facilities and equipment available, and the expertise of the teachers.

The articles assigned this week address the resistance and protest of indigenous people against the colonizer. The articles tackled the actions taken by a series of protest ands resistant movement named, “Idle No more.” Upon the foundation of the movement by the Aboriginal peoples in Canada, it was devoted to organizing political actions worldwide. For example, Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence played a key role by entering long weeks of hunger, which resulted in many sympathizers and people protesting in different cities around the world such as Los Angeles, London, Minneapolis, Ontario, and New York.

There are several up and downsides of being a student athlete but, the feeling of being apart of a team and doing something you love is the ultimate reward. According to the NCAA, “More than 460,000 NCAA student-athletes – more than ever before – compete in 24 sports every year” (“Student-Athletes”). Being a student athlete you learn how to be a part of a team as well as developing leadership qualities. Throughout your entire high school and or college athletic career, you’re creating everlasting friendships and memories with teammates and coaches. Being a student-athlete, your main priority is school but, with a busy and jammed packed schedule it can get a little overwhelming. With a busy schedule, student athletes have no choice other than to manage their time wisely. Along with learning time efficiency, participating in sport teaches you to be goal oriented. When you’re involved in sports, you push yourself physically and emotionally. You begin to set goals to better not only for yourself, but to better your team as well. Sports are one the best television programs that anyone can watch for entertainment. Anyone at a young age until to their oldest time can participate in any way in sports. Some individuals can participate as athletes, coaches, fan clubs, and team managements, however, participating or joining teams can differ from pays or rewards. In college, students has been participating in clubs and sports to get involved in school for requirements or due to scholarships. Specifically, student athletes who plays sports in college seems to get the most attention in college due to their entertaining and competitive games. As your school’s most visible athletes your primary role is to build a sense of community and school spirit both on and off the playing field. Whether cheering at games, running a pep rally, hosting visitors, or competing at competition, always conduct yourselves in a manner that bring enthusiasm to your school and unity to your community.

Student-athletes have a very difficult social life because of various responsibilities; many of those include doing well in school, exceeding expectations in their sports, and being a good role model for peers and other students.

The stigma of the sedentary lifestyle is not limited to working. Many sedentary habits develop at ones home. Watching television and playing on the computer have proven to be one of the least engaging metabolic activities. Riding, driving and reading have proven to have higher metabolic rates then watching television or playing a game on the computer. Working and watching television consumes many American’s time (Medical Center). Based on a study done in 2012 the average American under the age of two watches approximately thirty-four hours of live television a week and three to six hours watching taped programs a week (Hinckley). In the end, a small fraction of the day is left to burn calories and raise ones metabolic rate (Medical Center).

Students are people who study at school or college. At school students, lives are divided into two sections such as academic and athletic. During high school, sports become a good portion of students’ lives. Some parents send their children to study at school and considers sports a distraction to studies. A true sport requires energy, time, and determination..There are a few disadvantages to playing sports in High School but there are even more benefits to playing sports in High School. Playing sports in high school helps improve academic performance, has physical and psychological benefits for women, and helps build social skills.

A 2016 study by the NCAA revealed that there are nearly eight million students who participate in high school athletics in the United States, yet only 480,000 of them will compete at NCAA schools ("Probability of Competing Beyond High School"). Of that approximate 16% who become a student-athlete, an even smaller percent will graduate and become professional athletes. For example, data from the 2015 NFL Draft demonstrates that there is less than a 2% chance of playing in the NFL. During the 2015 Draft, there were 72,788 NCAA football participants, only 16,175 of those were draft eligible for the 256 slots which equates to a 1.6% chance of being drafted to the NFL. According to the NCAA, of the 256 NCAA players selected in the 2015 NFL draft 236 were from Division I FBS institutions, 17 were from Division I FCS programs, two were from Division II programs, and only one was from a Division III program. Student-athletes from the power five conferences accounted for for 200 of the 256 draft picks (SEC=54, ACC=47, Pac-12=39, Big Ten=35, Big 12=25) ("Probability of Competing Beyond High School", 2016). With there being a small percentage of playing professional sports after college, the importance of a college degree has become a priority for many student-athletes.

With the chance at a college scholarship becoming the main focus for some students who play sports, club sports seem to be the way to go. On the other hand Dan Gould, Michigan State professor, provides some example of why club sports may not be the best way to go. The biggest reason is the “One-sport wonder” student athletes who specialize in one sport their entire life. “Specialization leads to overuse injuries: pitch counts get too high, players use the same muscles and hurt them” (12). So when students play club sports and specialize they risk the chance of hurting themselves and losing out on scholarship opportunities. Gould continues his point by saying playing multiple sports, and gaining multiple skills help athletes to perform better. So the claim that students should play club because it’s better for developing their skills is not completely valid. Students who play high school sports are more likely to play more than one sport and potentially gain skills that an athlete playing club sports will not.

Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave is a short story specifically discussing the parallels between the shadows the prisoners sees on the wall of the cave, and the illusion, which passes off as truth in today\\'s society. The Allegory of the Cave is about Socrates teaching his student, Glaucon, certain principles of life by telling him one of his allegories. The Allegory of the Cave can be interpreted in many ways; one way is to make a comparison between the story and the way of thinking by individuals in a closed society.

The very first essay we had to write in the beginning of the semester was a narrative essay on any topic of our choosing. I chose to share about how I met my best friend and a couple other friends while we were in middle school. My experience writing that essay was very meaningful on my heart and made me appreciate our friendship even more. I enjoy narrative essays because your open to just let everything flow with little restrictions. I could tell my story how I wanted too.
