Growing up in such a small town, community was something deeply ingrained into my life from a very young age. Community was something cultivated through one's obligations to help fellow citizens, the overall ideology of benefits reaped through community service, and the beauty and heart of a tight-knit community. In my small Texas town, community was the lifeblood coursing through the veins of winding asphalt backroads, surrounded by agriculture.
In my hometown, hospitality and helping others went hand in helping hand. Almost every weekend, a group of people host benefit plate sales, or raffles, as means of benefitting and serving another community member. These acts of kindness ranged from assisting a suffering member of the community, a community team yearning to travel and compete for the town’s name, or to help cover medical expenses for the ill and seriously injured. When these events happen, majority of the community feels a subconscious obligation to, in some way, contribute to the improvement of the cause behind the plate or raffle. For example, my family and others, do not always have time permitted to actively serve at these

Though I do plan on graduating and moving to Austin, Texas, I still do love how helpful having a small community can be. In my experiences with community, I have felt nothing but support. When a close friend of mine was lost in an accident, members of my community immediately stepped in to help both his family, and the grieving students. This help came in the form of counselors ready to listen to every falling tear, fellow citizens reaching out to care for the mourning family, and peers comforting each other regardless of who you were. Any time there was an issue in Carrizo Springs, there was always a multitude of neighbors and friends ready with both sweet food and sweet
The foreclosure crisis is the second major financial dilemma of the twenty-first century. To solve this, the roots of the problem need to be dug up and exposed followed by replanting with an appropriately improved regulatory system to help build stronger roots for the future. It seems that the free market system can't be free anymore given its intertwining roots extend way beyond domestic to international financial systems. There are two fundamental causes to the latest credit crisis: 1) poor quality securitized mortgages and 2) insufficient underwriting for credit poor borrowers. Secondary (downstream) problems making the financial crisis more complex include underemployment and business failures. Many banks,
A community is a place where people around supposed to be able to live and thrive together. When one thinks of a community, the image that most likely is visualized is one of a place where each person lives harmoniously with all the other members of that community. While this may be the typical image of a community, it is not the realistic view. In reality communities can share both good and bad aspects. In Place Matters: Metropolitics for the Twenty-First Century Peter Dreier, John Mollenkopf, and Todd Swanstrom make the argument that the place a person lives ultimately matters over all else; the place which a person lives effects the choices that that he/she makes and determines his/her ability to obtain a
My father is going to retire in some years and my mother is a house wife. They both have invested in their house heavily therefore these reasons might affect my family’s ability to fund my college tuition.
A young person should strive to support their local community for various reasons. Engaging in community service provides people with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large. Community service and volunteerism enables one to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service to those who need it most.
Community is defined as a group a people living in an area under the same conditions. Realistically, a community is so much more than this definition. It is people and their different beliefs that form a community. In the town of Milagro, Amarante Cordova, Ruby Archuleta, and a town coming together to rescue a fellow community member from jail exemplify the true spirit of what community is.
As a student, I have demonstrated many works of service to my community and school. Service opportunities have shaped me into the person I am today and these projects have made me realize how fortunate I am for all that I have. While I've been doing these service projects through the years, it has been a pleasure seeing the joy on the faces of people that aren't as fortunate as I am. Service projects that I have completed include managing the fish booth at the St. Leo's Parish Festival, being an altar server at St. Leo's Parish, helping cook dinner for the Ridgway Fire Department during carnival day setup, participating in the St. Marys Light Up Night by dancing, and Christmas caroling to local residents. I also participated in a zombie/princess
First, community is our “home.” We have been living in a community ever since we were just little babies and it has always influenced us. Communities have played a big part in who we are today. We start off in school not knowing anyone or anything and as you get older you begin to think about the
I have been a part of JROTC for the past four years of my high school career. During my time in the program, I gained more self-confidence and was able to venture out of my comfort zone, which allowed me to join numerous clubs and organizations throughout my high school career. The clubs include the Chess Club for one year, the Environmental Club and AFJROTC Honor Guard team for two years, and Science Olympiad all my four years of high school. The organizations include the National Technical Honor Society for two years and National Honor Society for two years as well and voted Vice President.
I intend to use this scholarship to help pay for my tuition and books at the Southern Arizona University of Phoenix- Online. I would like to be considered for this scholarship because I have no financial help from my family. This means that I have to be able to pay for college on my own because of the fact that my father is no longer in my life, and my mom has my other siblings to take care of. My father is no longer in my life because he now lives in Mexico with his other family. I don’t have financial help from him because he has a wife and six other children. My mother would like to be able to help me, but she has two other children she’s taking care of by herself, and she has to prepare for my sister's graduation next year as well as mine this year. I plan to get a job after I graduate to help pay for the expenses of college, but since I am going online the expenses of college are going to be a lot less than if I were to go on campus, this is the main reason I am planning to go online, and to take a lot of the stress of being totally alone off myself because I will only be twenty minutes away from my family instead of an hour or two.
When you first meet me, you will see a determined young woman who wants to make a change in the world, be it small or big. Volunteering at Full Circle Farm is one of the many ways for me to change the world on a small scale, starting with my community. I have been going there for four years and every time I do, I learn something new. The wonderful people there welcome me with open arms, and, young or old, we all have the same goal: doing good for others.
I am writing to thank you for your generous $1000 Osher Initiative California Community College Scholarship. I feel very honor and appreciative to be the recipient of this awards.
Ever since I was a young kid I have always been interested in movies. My grandma, who was full of the wise the life experience left, always knew about my interest in movies. She feed my vain for the art. Even though her religion, she professed Adventist of seven-day religion, didn't let her go to the cinema, she always found the way to took me to the cinema. She and I enjoyed watch movies. We used to sit in the darkness room, with our faces illuminated from the reflection of the light which rebooted from the screen, both absorbs in the plot of the movie which made us laughed or cried. After the movie, while we went back to her home, she started to talk about the movie. She had a particular point of view where the main story
To me, community is a place where you feel comfortable and supported. I asked some fellow students what being part of the FAU High community meant to them and answers included “It means being surrounded by kind people. I know that I can ask FAU High students in my classes for help if I am struggling and they will be more than willing to help me,” and “it means never having to eat lunch alone. When I walk into the food court, I see fellow FAU High students everywhere, and I know they would welcome me to eat with them.” Once we are on the college campus in tenth grade, everybody feels apart of the community. Even students that drop out in ninth grade are reluctant to do so, as they are doing it for academic reasons, and not social.
Throughout my life, I have been privileged to know a strong sense of community. My understanding of community has been carved out and shaped by each community that I have been a part of and the subsequent life experiences that I have had by being a part of these communities. To me, community means a sense of belonging with people who have some capacity of like-mindedness. When you belong to a community, you feel like a piece of a larger puzzle that comes together to create a whole. Each community you belong to both influences you, and is influenced by you. Moreover, your belonging to a community generates a sense of unity and shares a common goal, value, or outlook.
