Everyone belongs to a variety of communities at some point in life. I’ve recently been introduced to two brand new communities similar but different to the ones back home. The local community of Iola Kansas along with the basketball team of Allen Community College. I enjoy being with my basketball community it reminds me of home. However the small town of Iola does the complete opposite.
The people in Iola community are to themselves. The use to a interactive and social community. Communities are considered to be like your family. If there is no communication, there’s no family. In addition to the interest of Iola are food choices are scares. Communities should have attraction and I’m a food lover choices are scares. Communities should have
“If you know your identity and you know your community, both of those things, embrace them, whatever your goals are, no matter where you want to be. It may not be one path to achieve that goal; you may go down different paths. Just make sure that you make it authentic as possible. And how do you do that? Be yourself,” DiMarco
Even though I originally thought that never fully settling into a community would hinder my chances to build lasting friendships or become a strong decisive leader. I can now admit that my friendships would not be as strong if I hadn’t learned to appreciate every moment with them through years of not knowing if a day would come when I
Communities play an essential role in the development of the self and learning about the stranger. Through communities, individuals are able to socialize and gain a greater understanding of each other. A community can be defined in many different ways based on every individual’s experience with it. Developing a strong community takes time. Some people, like Jeannette Walls, do not have the opportunity to develop strong communities throughout their childhood.
A community is a place where people around supposed to be able to live and thrive together. When one thinks of a community, the image that most likely is visualized is one of a place where each person lives harmoniously with all the other members of that community. While this may be the typical image of a community, it is not the realistic view. In reality communities can share both good and bad aspects. In Place Matters: Metropolitics for the Twenty-First Century Peter Dreier, John Mollenkopf, and Todd Swanstrom make the argument that the place a person lives ultimately matters over all else; the place which a person lives effects the choices that that he/she makes and determines his/her ability to obtain a
First, community is our “home.” We have been living in a community ever since we were just little babies and it has always influenced us. Communities have played a big part in who we are today. We start off in school not knowing anyone or anything and as you get older you begin to think about the
The town that I grew up in is Cedaredge Colorado. It is a quiet little town nothing ever happens there. It is a rural community. There are lot’s of farmers and many older retired people who live in Cedaredge Colorado. My neighborhood has many people who live in it. Some of our neighbors are nice and so are total pains in the rear. We put on rodeo bible camps right at my house so there is around 400 different people at my house during the course of the 8 days. My neighbors are very lenient on the deal because of the fact that I know that they get bothered by it with all the noise and the rodeo’s that go on every day. All together though our town is a fun town to grow up in. Our high school football team won state in 2012 and the band has won
That will probably happen here since it’s such a tight knit community and everyone knows everybody. I really like how that happens because I, personally, feel like it gives a better school life and helps you in the long run. Culpeper was a small town and everything was within 15 minutes of my house. It was so convenient because I never had to go far to get gas, food, or hangout with friends. Culpeper was really my home because I felt safe and comfortable. I had my parents right there whenever I needed them, i had my dog sleeping with me every night, and I was dependent on other people always. Being at college is my first time away from my family and I think I’ve transitioned really well. Sometimes I miss them but Culpeper is only an hour away so I can go whenever I’m not that busy. I think I can consider Eastern Mennonite like a second home. It shares some of the same qualities as Culpeper, like everything is close, I always feel safe and know everyone is here to help me whenever I need. In Culpeper there was always a ton of people I could go to if I ever needed anything, and I could still go to them.
I’m from a town where everyone knows everyone. My sense of place and connection lies within my hometown. The citizens of Yuba City constitute my community. I was born and raised in this farm town and I love every square mile of it. I identify with the people of Yuba City as my community because we all share love and compassion for this town. To me Yuba City isn’t just a small rural town, but it is the place that forged and crafted me into the person I am today.
Canton, Georgia was the city where I was raised from the time I was seven years old. The quiet neighborhood was where most of my friendships were developed. The majority of my friends rarely left Canton. We attended the same elementary, middle and high schools and played on the same sports teams. My upbringing is what most would consider a normal, American childhood. During the summer before my sophomore year in high school, we were given the opportunity to move to the city of Chicago for one year due to my father’s job which required relocation. That August we moved to Lincoln Park, a neighborhood in the city. Moving to Chicago was a new opportunity to live in a metropolitan city. Since I never lived outside of the suburbs, I was not sure what to expect. Jones College Prep, a highly
The neighborhood I live in is called Sugar Mill Pond; it’s surrounded by fields and has a huge pond in the middle of it; it’s located in South Louisiana in Youngsville in between two cities New Iberia and Lafayette. The town Youngsville and Sugar Mill Pond has become one of the happiest places to live and work; both have become both my community because of how small the town is so everyone knows everybody. It accommodates residents; it is surrounded by multiple schools, retail shops, and businesses. Its location offers large amount of entertainment, and a sense of caring in the air. My community comes together for any aspect that is needed, big or small problems.
Growing up in a large city can provide children with important lessons on diversity and allow them to explore incessantly. Growing up on a coast or near a mountain range supplies opportunities such as hiking, swimming, and other great outdoor activities you may not find elsewhere. Unlike both of these, I was raised in a small midwestern town with seemingly very little to do; however, this small town has helped shape who I am today. Hometowns can provide many meaningful experiences important to one's’ development and that is what Smithton, Illinois has done for me.
Born, raised and shaped within a community, the individual and the said community become intertwined and almost inseparable. When this relationship is threatened the individual will have a difficult time parting with a community that has been with them for the greater part of their life.
The strong sense of community that I have been privileged to know has been contributed to by many communities; however, two particular communities come to mind when I think about my own roles and personal growth.
Communities can be found everywhere and can be created anywhere. You may be unaware of it, but you are part of a community not only based on your location, but also based on your lifestyle, your religion, your heritage, your education, or your abilities. As Hewitt once said, “Community provides a psychological world and a place of identification for its members.” Identifying yourself with a particular community may be easier than it
Everybody lives in a community and also has some small communities of their own. A community that I was a part of was Troy Christian High School. This was my favorite community to be apart of from all the things I learned from being apart of it and all the things we did as a community.
