Compare And Contrast Plato And Aristotle

Plato and Aristotle are two of the most remembered philosophers of all time. Being master and student, the two have had interesting propinquity yet gradually they came to disagreements amongst their viewpoints. Plato concluded that the highest reality was the forms, or ideas, while Aristotle refuted such concepts, claiming the physical world to be the most real. Rooted in different philosophical origins, the two began to build vast networks of ideals, often having completely different conclusions as to how to accomplish day to day activities in practicality. One of the most important quarrels were the two’s views on justice and its essence. To ascertain what justice is to Plato, one must first assess Plato’s prior conclusions. Plato argues that ideas are the highest reality. To call a tree a tree, one must first be capable of equating what is being seen with the idea of a tree. For this to occur one must first have the idea of equality. Thus, one must be recollecting immortal ideas, or ‘forms’, which one must have had prior to birth. There being something forgotten and recollected implies that there is a soul linked to the human life, outside of the material realm. A soul is what animates humanity, and must be intimately related to the form of life. Just as the pure form of beauty does not possess any revolting elements, so too can one conclude that all pure forms do not admit to their opposite.
