Psychology and graphic design may seem like two entirely different subjects; however, they are very integrated topics as one can't work without the other. Both psychology and graphic design are two widely complex subjects that are almost nearly impossible to get a straight answer on "how do graphic designers use psychology in their designs?" To understand psychology and graphic design one has to look into the history of both, separate and together.
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its function. The study of psychology is a very wide and diverse field as human behavior is varied and unpredictable. Unlike physics or chemistry, there is no set in stone answers and or complete reasonings behind them. The areas of psychology are divided into two groups, basic and applied. (Source) Basic areas of study are an inquiry into what, how, and why the human mind works as it does. Applied areas make use of the knowledge, that is gained in the basic area, to better the human situation. The psychology of graphic design falls under the basic area due to the emotion, consciousness, motivation, and the learning aspect of design. (Cite)
