Love is one of the main themes of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are the star-crossed lovers on opposing sides of a feud, while Friar Laurence is essentially the mediator between the two. As Juliet says, “my only love sprung from my only hate.” (1.5 152) Each character has their own understanding of love and of what it truly means. Each character has their own personality and way of thinking that is a reflection of what their understanding of love is. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet not only tells the story of two lovers, but also questions the reality of true love through the experiences of Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Laurence.
Friar Laurence is a priest who also specializes with plants and their characteristics. He is the character who marries Romeo and Juliet, and keeps their secret. Additionally, he aids Juliet in getting her reunited with Romeo after Romeo is exiled. However, he does not believe their love is true. He begins out as a drama king who is in sorrow in a one-sided love with Rosaline. Their love begins to blossom when Romeo is ranting about Juliet’s beauty under her balcony after meeting her at a party at the Capulet mansion. (2.2 3-10) Ironically, he originally snuck into the party in hopes of catching a glimpse of Rosaline, but fell in love with another girl instead. This portrays Romeo as a player, because his heart is easily influenced by the beauty of women. However, Romeo goes to a local apothecary in Mantua for a vial of toxin to be with Juliet instead of finding a new woman to love, contradicting this. (5.1 63-69) He is willing to do anything to be with the love of his life, even going as far as to kill himself.
