Love is one of the main themes of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are the star-crossed lovers on opposing sides of a feud, while Friar Laurence is essentially the mediator between the two. As Juliet says, “my only love sprung from my only hate.” (1.5 152) Each character has their own understanding of love and of what it truly means. Each character has their own personality and way of thinking that is a reflection of what their understanding of love is. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet not only tells the story of two lovers, but also questions the reality of true love through the experiences of Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Laurence.
Friar Laurence is a priest who also specializes with plants and their characteristics. He is the character who marries Romeo and Juliet, and keeps their secret. Additionally, he aids Juliet in getting her reunited with Romeo after Romeo is exiled. However, he does not believe their love is true. Friar Laurence tells Romeo not to rush a relationship with Juliet, because they barely know each other and are getting married three days since their first

He begins out as a drama king who is in sorrow in a one-sided love with Rosaline. Their love begins to blossom when Romeo is ranting about Juliet’s beauty under her balcony after meeting her at a party at the Capulet mansion. (2.2 3-10) Ironically, he originally snuck into the party in hopes of catching a glimpse of Rosaline, but fell in love with another girl instead. This portrays Romeo as a player, because his heart is easily influenced by the beauty of women. However, Romeo goes to a local apothecary in Mantua for a vial of toxin to be with Juliet instead of finding a new woman to love, contradicting this. (5.1 63-69) He is willing to do anything to be with the love of his life, even going as far as to kill himself. This portrays him as a man who is willing to do anything for the one he loves, no matter what the
In their song,“They don’t know about us”, One Direction shows the feelings of the lovers who hide their love, which share similar conflict to Romeo and Juliet. Both couple hide their love from the world and their families. In the beginning of their song, One Direction express their feelings of young couple as “People say we shouldn't be together” and “We're too young to know about forever” which is telling that young couple don’t know everything. However, in Shakespeare’s play of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet expresses her love but also understands the consequences of it. In fact, when Juliet is at the balcony, she talks to herself, being worried and questions Romeo, “O Romeo,Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?” and suggests him to “ Deny thy
I’m starting at where Romeo killed Tybalt, and switching it. A friend of Romeo is angry and kills Tybalt. The Prince is disgusted in how this senseless feud and fighting has become. Then it switches to Juliet, sitting in her room after hearing the news. She cries at first, but cannot cry anymore for Tybalt. Her mother comes in and they talk. Juliet tells her mother that she will willingly marry Paris, but only if they let her wait for a week and mourn for her cousin. Her mother, happy, runs to tell her husband the news. He’s just as happy that she’s being “reasonable”. Juliet, however, has different plans. She plans to run away. She just doesn’t know how though. Three days pass, and juliet still mourns for her cousin, but her mind is on Romeo. A girl
In William Shakespeare’s, Romeo and Juliet, two lovers from hated families met and is later torn apart in the end from the changes, choices, and death.. Different examples of their fate are from their families choices and rivalries in this story. In this play, Romeo and Juliet are meant to be together even though they come from two families that are rivals. To begin, Peter comes up to Romeo asking him “God ‘i’ good e’en.
Deadly love Have you ever found wanting to kill yourself after a relationship with a special someone? Some people chose different events than me and they have good reasons for it but of course I think that the event I chose has a huge role in the story even though the decision take only a few seconds for Romeo to go through with it. I will admit there are other scenes that made sense to me at first but after I thought about it for a little bit I changed my opinion.
Romeo and Juliet knew each other for less than a week and in that week, they fell in love, were separated, and then killed themselves. They fell in love in one night. When Romeo was meeting with Friar Lawrence to discuss the possibility of him being the priest for the wedding, even Friar Lawrence believed Romeo was moving too fast. “Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear,” (Act 2 scene 3, Line 70) In this quote, Friar Lawrence is confused about Romeo’s choices.
In the movie Romeo and Juliet, the characters use guns instead of using swords or daggers. The play used the dagger and the sword but, in the movie they switched to modern day weapons like handguns. The play was focused on how they get around by horses, but in the movie it focuses on how they get around in modernized cars. I think the author made these changes because the movie was made later which means there was more technology than there was 10 years ago, so he took technology to his advantage. At the beginning of the movie the Capulets are dressed in black jackets and boots. The Montague's are dressed in bright orange and yellow shirts. The play was more in the 1500’s while in the movie it was more into the 1990’s.
Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare that follows the lives of two star-crossed lovers who are destined to die because of the rivalry between their two families. In the play Romeo and Juliet fall madly in love but because of catastrophic events that occur, they both are willing to die rather than be separated from each other. This topic of ill-fated love brings the difference between a parent’s view and a child’s view on who their true love should be. Most parents want what is in the best interest for their child while, the child sees qualities and personality to choose their true love. While a child’s view and a parents view may have similarities and differences the three main qualities both have in mind for their perfect mate is their physical appearance, personality, and expectations.
He’s gone. He’s actually gone. I never thought he would leave me. I never thought he would end up dead. Yes I ran from him, yes I was cruel… I was only protecting myself. My heart was broken before and I knew it was to happen again, so I ignored him so no feeling wou’d come of my sad heart. And then he came to a Capulet party. My uncle’s party. He came for me. He was so persistent, so kind through my hate. Then he runs off with my dear Juliet. I know I did’t love him, everyone knows that, but he didn't have to run off with my cousin… I shouldn't be mad at her, she couldn’t have known, I was as cold as a winter's night. No, I was worse than that, I don’t know how he could have even loved me for as long as he did. Of course he couldn’t have loved me that much if when he
While watching and comparing Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 interpretation of Romeo & Juliet and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version there is a great difference between the two. When comparing the two the big change is not only the setting but the whole vibe with the characters. In the 1968 version it stays true to the play rather than just in the 1996 version where it is more modern. It is not only more modern in clothing but with their weapons, which in the movie they used guns instead of swords. Then in the 1968 version they had clothing you would see in the time of Romeo and Juliet and they used swords. The quality of the movies showed great improvement with the camera works. It also showed how much technology has improved in that amount of time. That is just a minor scratch in the surface on the many differences between the two movies but they also have things that are similar.
Shakespeare's main characters are never ‘dull’; they’re always intricate, with motives that present complexity, which proves to sometimes be problematic. The characterization of the Duke is similar to that of Lucio’s because these two characters both have many facets to them. And these similarities enable us to see how even though these characters might be similar in ways, their actions and the way they go about dealing with the things they’re faced with are different. Since the Duke holds greater power he is able to go to extreme lengths, in order to get what he wants, unlike Lucio, who is merely just a character who happens to live in Vienna.
Romeo got banished after killing tybalt after tybalt killed romeo's friend. Romeo is punished for murder and may never enter the city again. Juliet, romeo's lover hears this news and begins to panic. Romeo is determined to see juliet again but juliet thinks she won't see him ever. What will romeo and juliet do after hearing this news.
‘Romeo and Juliet’, known as one of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays, is based on two warring households, the Capulet and the Montagues, and their children’s tragic, doomed love. Shakespeare’s intention of showing the impetuousness of youth, social issues, and his intention to entertain various people has been shown in many adaptations of this beloved play. Baz Luhrmann’s version of this tragic play, directed in 1996 is able to portray Shakespeare’s intention in a unique, modern way, making the film true to his own and appealing to the modern society. Franco Zeffirelli’s version also portrayed these intentions well but considering the time of its release, it pales in comparison to Luhrmann’s version.
While reading and watching Romeo and Juliet, I liked the movie the most. Throughout all three different types of Romeo and Juliet we watched and read, they were all different in their own special way; weather some of the characters were different than themselves in the other two types or they didn’t show up at all and they are a big part in the original Romeo and Juliet ect. Really there was no character that was the exact same in all 3 different types of Romeo and Juliet. They were either more talkative or more violent (Romeo), but I don’t think that there was a character that was the exact same from the play to the book, then to the movie. That is why I pick Romeo to compare and contrast in my first paragraph because he was the most different from the movie to the play to and/or and
Love and romance are slowly diminishing over the ages. Woman have lowered their standards so much that it has changed romance’s normality. In our generation, girls now just hope for a text back or for their own boyfriends to call them pretty. Technology is mostly to blame for this change. Hanging out has turned into phone calls, phone calls have turned into text messages, kisses have turned into emojis, and love letters have turned into goodnight texts. Ladies and gentlemen have become more comfortable and lazy when it comes to romance due to cellphones and computers. This change can be seen in literature too. Many romance writers works from centuries ago compared to modern romantic writers of today's day, demonstrate more of a passion and
Many readers say that Romeo and Juliet is a classic story of true love, this is incorrect it is a classic romance but it does not hit the mark for true love. Romeo and Juliet’s love was based almost entirely on physical attraction and romantic words. Pure attraction can not create a long lasting relationship, had they spent more time together or fought a little or at least got to know each other better before killing themselves for each other, than maybe could have qualified as true love, but Shakespeare does not show us any of this making an unrealistic expectation of love. Also these young “lovers” were both in very emotional parts of their lives, Romeo heartbroken and Juliet not wanting to get married yet.
