Compare And Contrast Sparta And Athens

The city-states Athens and Sparta were rivals in ancient Greece. Geographically the two were very close to each other, but they had a very different economy, cultural values, and way of governing. Both city-states had two very different ways of doing things. I will be highlighting the major differences.

During the times of Ancient Greece, two major forms of government existed, democracy and oligarchy. The city-states of Athens and Sparta are the best representatives of democracy and oligarchy, respectively. The focus of the times was directed towards military capabilities, while the Athenians were more interested in comfort and culture. It was the oligarchy in Sparta that put a war-like attitude as its first priority and best met the needs of Ancient Greece. These factors empowered Sparta and led to the development of an authoritative and potent state. Other contrasting issues included women’s rights, social classes, and value of human life.

Athens and Sparta are the two famous city-states in Ancient Greece. The Athens was more superior then Sparta. The Athenians were stronger because they had a better geography, government, cultural achievements, and I would rather live in the Athens.

Athens was the warm welcoming city-state in Ancient Greece, most unlike the horrific neighboring city-state, Sparta. Athens was full of life and the people living there appreciated all of what others had to offer: arts, music, life, and new cultures. Athens offered many activities for all men, women, and children. Sparta was cruel, disgusting, and uninviting… each day would be a struggle to survive. Children were tortured to become “stronger”and all men would be fighting and stealing things just to survive. Women were forced to go through training to become strong, to male healthy babies, it was tough. When women were forced to produce offspring, many of the “weak” babies were left to die. Athens was more inviting and had many more fun things to do, which is why Athens is a better place to live.

     As we look back upon the two significant differences in the governmental systems of Sparta and Athens, there are also many other characteristics that distinguish the differences and similarities of these two city states. The difference in land as well as population perceives a relative historical comparison. Sparta lacked land area and was forced to seek other land in the fertile plain of Messenia. Although, if we look at the Athens, we see that they had no issues with plentiful land, as they possessed large and populous territory.

The most important city-states of Ancient Greece was Sparta and Athens. Both of these city-states shared similar characteristics such as both would remain the foundation for the Greek political world. Both Athens and Sparta had a similar government system. Their members were elected by the people. Athens is said to be the of democracy. Athenians were educated(except girls) but they never knew much about brute force, unlike the Spartans. The Spartans changed their society to remove all social distinction and became the greatest soldiers in Greece. Even girls were trained to become soldiers because for the Spartans there is no such thing as inequality; women can do the job of mem. However, in Athens, girls did not receive an education like the boys in Athen did but, instead, were expected to become housewives. The Greeks never unified

Athens, the home of famous philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Athens gave a foundation for these people to lead great lives, something that Sparta just can’t do. Unless and until people want their lives to be bland and focused only on a military, Sparta is the right place for those people. But, if people want their life to be interesting, or to be part of a wonderful system of government, welcome to Athens! Athens has a much better form of government compared to the unfair oligarchy of Sparta.

Athens would have been a better place to live because they were a democracy, they had great infrastructure, and they provided education to all. Although the ancient cite-states of Athens and Sparta were geographically close, and their political models had some similarities, the two rival Greek states ultimately grew in different directions in terms of culture and political life. While Sparta's people dedicated themselves to military might, war, with strength, organization, and idealization of the male soldier being paramount to their culture, Athens grew increasingly committed to the arts, culture, and reason, becoming the first democracy.

Athens and Sparta had many aspects to their culture, and they all contributed to the success both city-states had. If I could time travel back to the past I would prefer living in Sparta, due to their treatment and expectations they held for women. For example, when the Sparta men went to war the women had to look after their husbands property. This included guarding the land from invaders and revolts from slaves. They were also allowed to remarry if their spouse was away at war to long. On the other hand the women in Athens were not even able to choose who they would be married to, and to make matters worse for the women of Athens they would be married at age fifteen. Even though the Athenians and Spartans have similarities such as sharing the same language, religion, and both living in Ancient Greece they have several differences. For example, Sparta focused on military training, whereas Athens focus was on education, and the roles for men and women such as their responsibilities and daily life. For Spartans their military was one of their main priorities. It’s focus was on their army and loyalty to their state.

The ancient civilization of Greece contained many different city-states; two of these city-states were Sparta and Athens. Sparta and Athens were different in their values, politics, and societies. Sparta was focused on their military, discipline, and to have a strong state. Athens was a democratic state that was peaceful and where women were open to culture and democracy.
