X Compare the ways the distinctively visual is created in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and in one other related text of your choosing.
The use of distinctively visual images allows an audience to perceive and distinguish the composer’s specific representation. From these distinctive visuals, the audience’s perceptions force them to respond in a particular way. In ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’, Ang Lee utilises a range of film techniques to position his audience through a combination of quiet, dramatic scenes and choreographed action sequences. In his painting, ‘Third of May, 1808’ Fransisco Goya conveys meaning exclusively with distinctively visual techniques. Both the composers are able to effectively convey their message and

The director mainly used eye level shots, to leave it up to the audience to judge the two main characters of the movie, although certain power struggles in the film are shown from high angles to illustrate someone dominating a conversation or argument. Figgis also uses some point of view shots to show the imbalance during Ben’s drunken periods where the camera is placed at an oblique angle to show tension and approaching movements. The images in the film are in high contrast with streaks of blackness and harsh shafts of light to underline the dramatic events that occur.
The painting 2 de Mayo de (1808) is a scene where citizens of Madrid are rebelling against the French soldiers. The image showed a chaos action where people are killing each other. There are lots of tension in the painting, however, by the beautiful color combination and over all composition, Goya lead our eyes around the image creating harmony. Moreover, Goya painted the figures in the image differently; they had a more three-dimension and round looking. Followed by the 2 de Mayo de, He painted El tres de mayo de (1808) where the main action in the painting focus on the emotions in the horror of war. In this painting, Goya successfully expressed rage and fear, and the painting is acknowledged as the first painting in modern era. The white color on the man’s shirt emphasis the focal point and indicates the pure and innocent of a citizen and also showed the brave side of a man who protects others. Goya’s painting had become iconic symbols for the violence of France to the
Distinctive images are often filled with various qualities, and these qualities often create interest and create unique experiences. The John Misto play ‘The Shoe Horn Sonata’ and the Craig Johnson film ‘The Skeleton Twins’ both demonstrate images which are distinct and help the audience figure out the two texts. Images, along with various film and dramatic techniques attract the eye and help give a positive response and often a feel of the characters and what is occurring. Without the use of images, the two texts and many other texts would not be distinctive visually.
Screen and Visual images are important in the film; The Piano directed by Jane Campion. The screen and visual images are represented by Motifs. They are related to the dominating characters which makes them important.
May second and third, 1808, the Napoleonic army invaded Spain and then proceeded to unjustly execute all Spaniards suspected of involvement in the uprising. Already 62 years old and in poor health at the time of the initial invasion, this left a profound impact on Francisco José de Goya. He began chronicling the horrors he was
‘The Third of May 1808’ was painted by a Spanish painter - Francisco Goya in 1814. In this painting, Goya attempted to describe the battle between Spanish and Napoleon during the occupation of 1808 in the Peninsular War. It is also meant to commemorate the braveness of the Spanish army who is trying to fight against Napoleon who backtracked his promise and betrayed the Spain’s King – Charles IV.
In cinema, lighting, blocking and panning drastically influence what an audience will notice and take away from a scene. Orson Welles’s 1941 Citizen Kane has numerous examples of effectively using these aspects within mise-en-scène, cinematography and editing to portray the importance of specific events and items in the film. The scene where Kane writes and then publishes his “Declaration of Principles” (37:42-39:42) in the New York Daily Inquirer after buying them focuses on important elements of the film, aiding the audience by combining lighting, blocking and panning to define significant roles and objects that further the movie as a whole.
Recently In Film and Media I watched a movie called “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”. This movie was interesting to say the least and was kind of goofy in some scenes. Although I thought some parts were dumb most of this movie was good. In the next few paragraphs I am going to give you my thoughts on this film and explain the plot of the movie.
There are, of course, moments within the works of the period when it is clear that artists seek to remind the audience of artificiality of the work they are
Francisco Goya was a Spanish Romanticist painter who was born 1746 and died in 1828. Although he was born near Saragossa, he was living in Madrid when he painted “Executions of the Third of May”. The famous painting refers to 1807 when Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to make an alliance with King Charles IV in order to conquer Portugal, but his true plan was to take over Madrid. When the French troops stormed Madrid, Napoleon claimed that they were just passing through, but when they began taking over, king Charles IV soon realized the alliance was a hoax. Soon after Napoleon’s brother, Joseph Bonaparte became the new king of Spain. The siege lasted three days and on the second day a rebellion broke out and on the third day, the rebels were slaughtered. It is said that Goya himself witnessed the murders from atop the hill of Principe Pio and once the massacre had ended he began making sketches of the bodies under his lantern. Although the story is not proven, it is clear that it affected him greatly.
Conflicts have caused a considerable amount of damage to the country's people and economy. However, conflict have also had a tremendous impact on art; including the famous art pieces we know today. Conflict has especially impacted these three art pieces: Gassed, The Third Of May 1808 and Awaken From The Unknowing. The Third of May 1808 was completed by Francisco Goya in 1814, greatly inspired by the Peninsular war. Gassed was completed by John Singer Sargent in 1919, influenced by the first world war. Finally, the Civil Rights movement guided Charles White to complete Awaken From the Unknowing in 1961. Conflicts have influenced art throughout history; each particular art piece showed the emotion and feelings the author had towards that specific conflict at the time.
I chose to my report on Francisco Goya Third of May, 1808. This painting represents the French taking over Spain during the time Napoleon was in reign. This invasion was a two day process but the painting is about what happened on the third of May. “Napoleon chose to invade Spain because he wanted to out his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, in power in Spain to have an alliance with Spain to conquer Portugal” (Zappella, 2014). “The invasion was an ambush as the French told the Spanish they were just passing through, but events soon quickly changed when the intentions became clear” (Zappella, 2014). According to Christine Zappella, “on the third of May Spanish freedom fighters were rounded up and massacred by the French. Their Spanish blood ran through the streets of Madrid” (2014). “The artist was so profound by the evets, he recreated the uprising in his paintings” (Zappelle, 2014). The first painting Goya created was the Second of May, which is Leonardo’s Battle of Anghiari. In this painting he depicts mangled horses and bodies on the streets of France. The second painting he created was the Third of May. This painting
Picasso’s work is drawn and has similarities from Francisco Goya’s The Third of May 1808 which shows Napoleon’s soldiers murdering the Spanish civilians under the power of Joachim Murat.
This film, being action packed, utilizes a lot of fast paced and even fast-forwarded movements to emphasize the intensity of the situations. An example of this is the scene when Huo Yuanjia
The Third May of 1808 was an exceptional Spanish piece that was completed in 1814 and was painted by Francisco Goya. This painting was meant to emphasize the resistance Spain gave to Napoleon’s armies in 1808 during the Peninsular War. Each character and detail of the setting in the painting adds to the horrific losses and struggles some faced during the war. In the painting, there are two groups of men. On the right side, there are the men standing in a line and firing their guns away. The left side shows their captives who are disorganized and have no clue how to escape. This painting has been an inspiration to other paintings created by artists from various parts of the world. For example, Édouard Maneta was inspired to create a new series.
