Art History Ancient World
Homework Assignment #1
Compare and contrast the subject, concept, and the Formal Element of the two works of art. Also, explain which category this work falls in. The two pieces I have chosen can be found on page 200, figure 6-51, Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian’s Villa and on page 434, figure 14-8, Battle of the Bird and Serpent. Not only did I choose these pieces for their beauty, but also because both works have similar yet different subjects, concepts, and formal elements. Both of these images have subject matter that is the same even though they’re different.
The subjects for the Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian’s Villa are animals; centaurs (male and

Also, the shapes in the background are fuzzier and assumed in piece one where the shapes in piece two are sharper and more defined. Another formal element is texture. The first piece, according to the text, is a floor mosaic which is composed of many colored tesserae that were laid down in irregular, curving lines, which effectively imitated painted brushstrokes. The individual tiles are more apparent when viewed closely. This gives the piece a grainy and earthy texture, where it physically looks bumpy. The textbook says it has foreshortening, the illusion created on a flat surface in which figures and objects appear to recede or project sharply into space. The second piece was drawn with tempera on parchment. This makes the piece look smooth, flat, and two dimensional. The next element is color. The hues in both pieces are relatively earth toned. Both pieces have a low level of saturation. In piece one, the sky is mustard brown with a section of mint green that frames the boulder that the male centaur is holding. The rocky scenery has browns and creams with a dull green and brown center. A bright green patch of pine trees is in the corner that contrasts with the sky and rocks. The colors to the second piece are similar in the sense that it has low saturation. The colors are dull and warm. This piece utilizes reds and oranges, in the serpent, that the first piece does not. Because of the tan
Bravery is not inherent, it is rather acquired from the circumstances or situation faced in the life. People face lot of problems in their lives and to cope with those situations and move in with one's life is the sheer example of being brave. The same has been depicted by both the authors in their respective books. First by Kaye Gibbons in her very famous book "Ellen Foster" where in the protagonist is shown as homeless girl with no one to take care of, yet she finds a way to live her life and find herself a house worth living. Second, by Mark twain in his
Greek culture is the source from which many of the characteristic elements of Western culture derive. Their explorations and innovations in art have both fascinated and inspired other civilizations for centuries. For this assignment I chose two Greek sculptures viewed at the Getty Museum. The first is Kouros circa 530 B.C. made of Dolomitic marble from Thasos and is approximately 200 cm (80 in) in height. The second is Cult Statue of a Goddess, (most likely Aphrodite) South Italy, 425 - 400 B.C. made of Limestone and marble. It stands at a height of 220 cm (86 5/8 in). There is some dispute to the authenticity of the Getty Kouros
For my final project, I will compare two pieces of art and show the comparisons and differences that they have in the Greek ancient period and the modern period of the same theme “the representation of the Trojan war”. The visual work art is a bilingual art because it was made with the participation of two artists, Andokides (Red figure) and the Lysippides (Black figure) and it is titled “Achilles and Ajax Playing a Dice a Game”. It was painted in 525–520 B.C in Greece and it represents the ancient Greece. The literary artwork I will consider is The Iliad, an epic poem by the ancient Greek poet Homer in 750 BCE. I will compare both artworks and connect them to the contemporary period debating the similarities and differences that the poem and the ceramic have and how they influenced our modern world, which help the creation of the film Troy led by Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom in 2004.
In today’s society the majority of the crimes are still being committed by people who have possessed a firearm that has been obtained illegally or without proper permits. That being said there has been a strong push for gun control because of the rise of shootings involving a large group of people such as the Columbine massacre, Virginia Tech shooting and latest Aurora movie theater shooting involving people who have purchased firearms legally. Gun control laws in the United States have been established for many years but to maintain a civilized society with limited crime stronger control laws need to be enforced in which will help reduce crime in our country. Establishing stronger gun control laws will educate
7. Describe the arrangement of this essay. At the most general level, it is organized as a comparison/contrast, but it is made up of eight sections that are separated by space within the text. Would you say that this structure is governed more by logos or pathos?
In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting artists Pablo Picasso and Van Gogh, considering their intentions with their artwork. Van Gogh and Picasso two of the most famous artists out there and still are to this day. Uncountable books have been published and dedicated to them and their lives and careers of being true artist. Their art has changed the way people view things and the world around them.
In my I chose to compare two cave paintings from the paleolithic period, The first cave in called Lascaux, and the second cave called Altamira. As we know that the Paleolithic time period is from 30,000 BC to 10,000 BC. The most common theme in cave painting during that time period was like a bunch of a large animals such as bison, horses, cows, deers, lions, birds, and aurochs. In those two pieces of cave painting I found alots of common stuff like the animals and the story of the painting as well but their are some differences like the purpose of the paintings, so in the first cave painting which is the Lascaux Their was a story behind this painting which is telling us about the wars during that time period; in the second cave painting which
The Weyden and Pontormo paintings both are trying to depict a similar story in different styles. In Weyden's piece the first thing you notice different from the Pontormo is the colors. In Weyden's piece the colors pop right out you since he used harsh bright colors for their clothing. Unlike Pontormo where he used very soft angelic colors like the pink and light blue and peachy colors. My eyes are attracted to the Weyden more than Pontormo even if its older because it looks so much more realistic than Pontormo. The drapery in Weyden's piece is very realistic as it falls on the bodies of each human standing or falling. The shadows of the drape make them look real as if you can pick them up directly from the painting. In Pontormo the drapery is more of a flowing feel to it. You can tell where it sits but it isn't as realistic and looks as if they were angels helping God up.
Proficient Comparison 21 points: I like your agenda. I think a little tweaking of the agenda will really help make your points sharp and significant. There are some interesting things you can do with these topics. You might want to keep thinking about the similarities and difference for these artworks.

It frolics in the woods of the legendary Mount Pelion in Greece, it marches on the wide green fields above Aslan’s stone tablet in Narnia, and it hunts in the damp darkness of the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts. It has appeared throughout history and across oceans, a resilient beast which is half-horse, half-human. Because of its pervasiveness, it is an ideal tool for analyzing human societies and relationships. As one of the most familiar Greek monsters on the planet, its name is easily recognizable by many people all over the world: the centaur.
The two works of art that I have chosen to analyze are 1) Jordan Casteel. Miles and JoJo. 2014. Oil on canvas, 54” x 72” and 2) Aaron Fowler. He Was. 2015. Mixed media, 134” x 165” x 108”. The themes that these works of art represent in regards to the exhibit are love, family, and pain. However, they also fall into other thematic categories. The main theme that seems to apply to both “Miles and JoJo” and “He Was” is Human Experience. Additionally, these arts differ in some ways.
Growing up, there are countless young boys, who have the dream of someday being a professional football or baseball player. Going outside and letting the imagination of being on the big stage and making the final pitch to win the World Series or the final Hail Mary throw to win the Super bowl. As a young kid, the dream of one day being the best and be paid to play a sport they grew up loving and playing. Although the sports of football and baseball are both very popular, there are a substantial amount of differences between
Advertising is a form of communication used to encourage or persuade an audience to continue or take some new action. But when advertisers produce an ad, they have many different variables that come into play if they want to successfully persuade consumers. The first most important step they have to figure out is, what type of audience they are trying to target. They then create images and intend to appeal specifically to the values, hopes, and desires of that particular audience. This is why someone would rather pick the well-known Malboro cowboy ads over the new female cigarettes of Virginia Slims. Each of these ads targets a specific audience;
