What’s meant to be will always find a way. It is a popular belief that your life is governed by only yourself and it is only your choices that affect your outcome. However, when you look the truth of life you realize that perhaps you don’t have as much freedom as you think you do. After all, you have absolutely no control over when and where you are born, over when you die or get a serious illness or complication, and how other people react to situations in their life that could ultimately affect your own. Your entire life revolves around what fate has in store for you.

In fact, there is absolutely no way to be one hundred percent positive that someone will be on your side. In the novella “The Pearl” a character responds “‘You have heard of fool’s gold?’ The dealer said. ‘This is fool’s gold. It is too large’” (Steinbeck 49). The original plan for the character Kino was to get a good amount of money for the pearl. Fate on the other hand had a different plan the Kino had no control of. You also do not have any control over the decisions other people in your life make. A hunter in the story of “The Pearl” remarks “‘If it is a coyote, this will stop it’ the hunter said as he raised the gun” (Steinbeck 86). Soon after, the hunter shoots the head off of an innocent baby. The other characters in the book did not chose for the hunter to take the gun and shoot. Fate is what planned for the hunter to be there at exact same time and place as Kino and his family. There are other sides to this debate which include the idea that if a person is in an automobile accident, they made the choice to text while driving. While this is true, the person in the other car was just minding their own business not realizing they were following the path that fate planned out for them that would lead to their death. The choices of other people that can affect your own life are fate’s

“ The acquisition of wealth is a work of great labor; its possession, a source of continual fear; its loss, of excessive grief.” This quote can apply in our lives and even some books we read like The Pearl. In the book, The Pearl, the wealth of Kino and his family is the pearl they find. It’s possession caused them great fear and labor from the beginning of the book, and it caused them grief towards the end. This quote applies to all parts of the book, and we will examine into all of the chapters to take a closer look.
Fate is one of the dominant themes in “No Country for Old Men.” Anton Chigurh, the ruthless killer in the story, would sometimes haphazardly kill people. At other times, he would propose that a potential victim call a coin toss which would ultimately decide whether they live or die. When Chigurh would murder people without a coin toss, they were often in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, it wasn’t completely up to chance, but fate. It’s the idea that every action and every decision a person makes will inevitably dictate their future. Chigurh didn’t feel accountable for anyone’s death because perhaps all of his victims’ decisions in life led up to their moment of death and that things were just meant to be that way. For example, he killed a man on the side of the road so that he could take his car. Chigurh also killed all three of the men who happened to be in the motel room he thought Llewellyn Moss would be in. It is by fate that the man was on the same road as Chigurh at the same time. It is also by fate that those three men got the same

Just like in real life, the characters in literature tend to be faced with very tough decisions in one way or the other. During these times, our decisions can turn us into heroes or make us look like big fools. The choices can thus affect our lives positively or negatively. ‘The Pearl’ is a 1947 novella by John Steinbeck where he tells the story of Kino, a pearl diver. Through the story, he tries to explore the nature of man of evil, greed, and defiance to the norms of society. He tells the story of how Kino found and lost the pearl. In this paper, the argument will be made from the point of Kino as a hero.
In both the case of Griet in Girl With the Pearl Earring and the mother in the Mr Clean commercial, the women are treated differently as a result of their gender. In Girl With the Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier, Griet, being a girl, has to do whatever task is assigned because it is her responsibility to. Most of the work that was required in the house was always assigned to the Griet and the other maid Tanneke. While being explained about the overwhelming house chores, Griet wonders out loud if Tanneke had been the one to all the chores by her lonesome, to which she replies with a yes and adds that Catharina also does some work (Chevalier 20). Despite the Vermeers being a large family, the only ones who are seen doing the work are the two
Fate? Or is there something else at work... something you can control?
The Girl with a Pearl Earring and Mona Lisa are the two most famous portraits ever painted (Courtauld 36). The girl with a pearl earring follows the Mona Lisa painting, which is considered as the most famous painting. The girl with a pearl earring, by Johannes Vermeer, and the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci were created during the same historical time. Historians believe that Leonardo da Vinci created his art piece between 1503 and 1506. The girl with a pearl earring was created in 1665. The masterpieces were both created using oil. The medium for the girl with a pearl earring was oil and canvas while Mona Lisa was created using oil and wood. They were both from the genre of portrait art.
In this world our race, location, family, and social class are already predetermined. We do not get to choose the position we are born into. Since we live in a world where most of our choices are made for us, some of us are luckier than others. Some people are born to better circumstances in life paths because of luckier predestined factors and qualities afforded to them. Because of the status in which we are born into, the journey we set ourselves on in life is a preconceived path that can be very cumbersome to deviate from. The path may be hard to digress from, but it is still possible for humans to determine their own outcomes and life paths, because we have free will and free will allows us to do this.
