Comparing The American Dream In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

The American dream is what someone believes will make the live a “happy life”, what makes life worth living. The idea of it is to succeed at whatever it is you want to have achieved when your life is complete. The American dream can only be attained by hard working.
In the book “Of Mice and Men” there are two men, Lennie and George. These guys have spent their lives together. They were brought together when Lennie’s Aunt Clara died. “Him and me was both born in Auburn. I knowed his Aunt Clara. She took him when he was a baby and raised him up. When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out workin”. (Steinbeck pg.40)
George spends a lot of time looking after Lennie because he is a bit vacuous, he has the mentality of a child. Many times George gets frustrated with Lennie because he tends to cause trouble. George explains this when he says: …show more content…

But he gets in trouble alla timehsbecause he’s so God damn dumb.” (Steinbeck pg.41) Although Lennie is this way, he works very hard and is a big help to George at times. The two depend on each other throughout the book. The two men are on their journey to what they see as their American Dream. They dream of owning their own ranch someday. The two discuss this early in the book: “Someday we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs and-” (Steinbeck pg.15)
Their plan was to work on the ranch until they had the money to buy the land of their own. The see this as their freedom from all worries. From the time the guys enter the ranch there seems to be a problem with the boss’s son, Curley. George and Lennie are warned of him and his wife by an old man named Candy. “Curley’s like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys. He’s alla time picking scraps with big guys” (Steinbeck
