Abstract
There have been continuous researches on the relationship between segregation and homicide across the state of Puerto Rico. This study will effectively determine if Puerto Rico has high crimes in homicide as compared to other metropolitan statistical area that is San Juan. The research will focus on a ten year comparison that is from the year 1998 to 2008. Using various statistics it is evident that rise in homicide is wide especially when the Puerto Ricans are segregated from the whites.

Due to this issue of segregation this study will examine direct and indirect impact of female headed household on homicides. It is evident that for all the Puerto Ricans are not widely associated with homicide as compared to the discussed metropolitan statistical area (Steve, 2010).
Introduction
From various statistics, it is very clear that the rates of crimes in Puerto Rico have significantly increased as compared to other metropolitan statistical areas. The various kinds of crime described in Puerto Rico from statistics of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) include robbery, rape, aggravated assault and homicide. Due to this case of crimes it is very evident that the state of Puerto Rico required immediate solutions that will assist to curb down the various form of crimes.
In introducing this topic it is important that the population being covered by the Puerto Ricans is discussed in comparison to that of San Juan state. It is important to emphasize on how the population of the Puerto Ricans differs from that of the San Juan and how this difference have contributed to the rising number of crime cases (Steve, 2010).
An empirical assessment having being done indicate that the crime being experience in Puerto Rico is largely being contributed by the following two reasons. Firstly, due to the scarcity of primary data on homicide cases which is constantly being eliminated from various analysis of crimes by the United States and secondly, Puerto Rico have
It is shown that areas in Chicago that have higher poverty levels have consequently higher homicide rates. For example, the area of Fuller Park, the poverty levels are at 56% and the homicide rates in this area are 63 per 100,000 people. On the other hand, in Mount Greenwood, where the poverty levels are at 3%, the homicide rates are 2 in 100,000 people. This shows that with increasing poverty levels come increased homicide rates. Poverty has such a big impact on the homicide levels in Chicago is for many reasons. One of these reasons is because many homicides are poverty on poverty homicides, as many people living in poverty in Chicago are easily caught up in violent crime. This happens because they are unemployed or without a home, so turning to gangs and a life of violent crime gives them a place to belong. Poverty is one of the main roots of the crime problem in Chicago, but the city council are unable to admit it. Therefore, instead of jobs and anti-poverty strategies being used to try and stop the violence, repression and moralism are being used to hopefully stop all the crime. Concentrated urban poverty often leads to violence, and many communities within Chicago fall into this spectrum. Concentrated urban poverty is defined as
Chon reviews and tests Neapolitan’s Regional Subculture of Violence Thesis (1994). The finding from this study suggested the current multiple regression analysis did not support Neapolitan’s argument. However, structure factors are more of a predicator in determining high homicide rate in Latin America. Chon explains the nation’s high homicide rate comes from a multitude of sources. One explanation is constructed on the regional violent culture theory. The other explanation is structure factors, which are (a) poverty (GDP per capita), (b) income inequality, (c) literacy rate, (d) alcoholic consumption level, (e) age distribution. The researcher uses published reviewed sources to support the main argument as well as used Neapolitan’s Regional Subculture of Violence Thesis (1994). This journal article will serve to be useful for answering my research question because it uses structural factors in determining the cause of homicide rate. Also, this article focus specifically on Latin America and the countries I am studying are in Latin
For hundreds of years’ race and crime in America has been an ongoing issue. Therefore, the criminal justice topic I am going to research throughout this paper will be regarding the different races and crimes that are most commonly committed and how each different race is treated in the criminal justice system also how they are each individually affected by the American justice system. I will discuss background information of each race as well as problems and issues they are currently facing today regarding the criminal justice system.
What's a common location that comes up in discussion when someone thinks of a destination to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the Main land of the United States? Normally Puerto Rico isn't too far away from conversation. Puerto Rico is a beautiful place with the perfect climate and many historical sites to take that getaway that you have always wanted. Today we will discuss major issues in/of Puerto Rico, the significance of this research and data sources, and lastly I will describe the data collected and research found during my inquiry on the region known as Puerto Rico
(1995), was temporary, and rose again in 2000. Because homicide is “the most accurately measured and most serious crime” (Levitt, 2004, p. 165; Boyum et al., 1996), Puerto Rico’s high rate of homicide and its more modest improvement during 1990-2005 deserve further analysis
The article elaborates the racial inequalities of black minorities in the Criminal Justice system. It reflects the difference arrest rate and concludes that the black are more likely to be arrested and sentenced to prison in terms of their White group. Indeed, it also shows the historical facts of high crime and the arrest rate of black minorities or African Americans in the Criminal Justice system. In general, it appears that Blacks represent a greater proportion of arrests for more violent, personal offenses than for property or victimless crimes. Also, it represents that the proportion of arrests for illicit drugs also high for Black group. The article represents that black conviction rate are much higher in comparison to whites.
During ancient times and the Middle Ages, crime was basically a rural problem rather than a urban problem and it wasn’t until after the 1960s in the United States that urban rates for homicide exceeded those of rural areas. In Canada, the rural homicide rate still exceeded the urban rate in the 1970 and a number of studies have shown that countries with greater inequalities in income distribution have higher murder rates. In the Unites States, racial disparity is highest in arrest rates for crimes of violence and the arrest rate for blacks is about eight times the rate of whites.
Crime is something that occurs throughout the world. To some people it is an incident that adds stress to one’s life, and to others, they see it as a way of life. Over the last years, different areas of the United States have been affected by crime. The Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Report (UCR) Program is a nationwide program that gathers statistical information from nearly 18,000 agencies that report criminal data on crimes that have been brought to their attention or reported voluntarily (The Federal
Crime and Race: Is there a Connection As of lately when we hear of committed crimes in the media, race is the primary topic of discussion more than the actual crime committed. As evidenced by research, debate will be conducted on the incidence of criminal prosecution, conviction, prison sentences and time served among different ethnic groups to include African Americans, Hispanics and Non-Hispanic White males. Crime is prevalent among all minorities, however there are factors and variables that lead to the predisposition of being involved in crime, and serving time for those crimes committed. Among these minority groups are differences which can help identify what exactly influences each group’s actions.
These trends, however, do not account for the whole country because they differ from place to place. The case of Ciudad Juarez is particularly extreme and, sometimes, shocking. Ciudad Juarez is a city of 1.3 million people across from El Paso, Texas. Although Ciudad Juarez is incredibly rich in nature and culture, in the last couple of years, it has not been known because of these virtues; instead, it has been all over the news due to its homicide rates, which have had peak rates greater than many war zones. One particular aspect that characterizes the homicides of this city is the high level of “feminicidios” (femicides or feminicides in English) that have taken place in the last two decades. In fact, more than 300 women have been murdered
The implications of culture as a context for crime can represent the behavior of person base on their culture. A different culture can characterized the actions of another culture as criminal or deviant. It is believed that some groups or individuals are more susceptible to becoming offenders or victims than other groups. In the pod cast “The Epidemiology Of Gun Violence: Race, Region And Policy” Dan Keating stated that “African-Americans are five times as likely to die by homicide from a gun, than by suicide.” And that “A white person is five times as likely to die by a suicide by gun, than by a homicide”. 2010 overall violent victimization rates among males and females were the same. Even though males and females encounter different
Puerto Rico has a unique relationship with the United States. Its people are glad to be part of America, yet the cling to their heritage fiercely. Puerto Rico is not a state of the United States, but it is a territory, which grants them different privileges and responsibilities. This paper will compare and contrast Puerto Rico with the United States.
Puerto Ricans face challenges in every aspect of their lives in and out of the island of Puerto Rico. In America, a trip to the hospital and or post offices may make life difficult when this culture of people try to figure out what they need or have had done. The need for medical care to ensure they have received immunizations necessary for school or work poses a problem especially because of the language barrier. If this culture of people find themselves in a courtroom situation they will clean but not with a full understanding of the situation the plead and the full ramifications of the plate even with an
This paper will explore how Puerto Rico can reverse and reduce their current murder rate. I have developed several recommendations to help the Puerto Rican authority’s achieve this goal. I base my recommendations on research conducted from books like the CIA world Fact Book, Preventing crime: what works for children, offenders, victims, and places, along with other websites, and my own personal experience as a military police officer.
This adds greatly to the crime and violence in Colombia (Posada-Carbo). It is extremely difficult to measure the magnitude, type, and location of violence in Colombia. Another problem in measuring the amount of violence is that not all violent cases are reported. It must also be noted that any media report of violence must also be read with caution; for it may or may not have occurred.
