“The most powerful way to reach an audience is through the characters' emotions” (Alderson). Sometimes a producer’s toughest job is to appeal to his or her audience to gain their interest in a film. Two of the movies we watched in class came to mind when I think of this. ‘Three Idiots’ along with ‘A Bronx Tale’ are fantastic examples of how a producer can reach the emotions of an audience. However, I felt that one film was more powerful than the other. Although ‘A Bronx tale’ is a well written story with talented actors, the feel for the viewer throughout the movie is almost a sort of low key melancholy as the drama unfolds. ‘A Bronx Tale’ deals with more complex issues such as the mafia, murder and even racism but the producer almost always gives us what we expect next. Conversely, the lower budget film ‘Three idiots’ with little know actors leads the audience through …show more content…
At one point we’re relieved to see Rancho fix his friends engineering project and the very next instant we become saddened to find out his friend hung himself due to the failure on that very project. We see Rancho always in the face of advisory and we never know how he’s going to concur it. We see Colejandro with a basic two choices, the choice to follow his father, al life of integrity and honesty or two follow Sonny’s mafia lifestyle, with more money and more power. On the other hand, Rancho is faced with many choices, all unpredictable and unexpected. He could flunk out of school, change his way to conform with Virus, marry the women he loves, or run back to home. In Ranchos case, all of the choices seem plausible but we never know what he’s going to choose until he does it. For example, when virus kicks the boys out if school, Rancho didn’t have to stop in the flooded streets to help virus and his daughter, but he did anyway because he knew the choice he should make and he went with his
A Bronx Tale, an American crime drama film directed by Robert De Niro accomplished all the aspects that correspond to a classic Italian mafia movie. Similar to The God Father, A Bronx Tale captured communal and family relationships in an Italian neighborhood in the 1950's and 60's. This motion picture included multiple sub-plots, but had an underlying plot that was concentrated on towards the end. The plot showed the bigger picture of the film which tackles a controversial topic, especially in the time period in which the movie takes place. The different sub-plots may alter one’s expectations of the remainder of the movie. Although this film includes many important details of conflicts, what one can grasp from watching the movie is the conflict between African-Americans and Italian-Americans. The director purposefully adds a love interest to show a sort of union in the midst of confrontation. In addition, what seemed to be a competition to dominate as Calegero’s father figure between Lorenzo, his dad, and Sonny, one of the men the protagonist looks up to, influences the audience’s idea of where the film is headed.
Tim Burton’s Ed Wood focuses on a short period in the life of the filmmaker and director Ed Wood, but it is able to delve deeply into the character’s desires and motivations as both a director and a regular person. In a movie like Ed Wood where the action is slow and ordinary, it becomes clear that the story is more about the artistic passion and desire for acceptance and community that is driving this man forward rather than what he is physically doing in his attempts to rise up in the world of movie making. In film, the motivations behind a character’s actions cannot be seen, so the narrative space of the story can begin to seem pointless and disconnected. In movies focusing on some great quest or task, it is easier to see the mind and
For my essay I have chosen the following stories: Little Red Riding Hood and The Wolf and Also The Three Little Pigs. In the story grandmamma was vulnerable and scared. Grandma opened the door against her better judgement. Grandma was weak and tough. She reminds me of my own grandma very kind against Red on judgement at times. She knew his grin was ill willed and allowed her to be eaten. The afraid kind lady should have never let her guard down. I can also remember a situation when my grandma who was put in the same position with one of our neighbors. Our neighbor sold my grandma some candy, a orange and a curling irons for twenty dollars. I made the neighbor give her back the twenty dollars. The neighbor for instance was the wolf and I would
In the film A Bronx Tale directed by Robert De Niro and the film A Place Beyond the Pines directed by Derek Cianfrace there is a common theme of father and son issues. In both films children have issues with their fathers which cause them to lean on others things. In the film A place Beyond the Pines, Jason learns about his dead father and tries to take revenge on the man that killed him. In the film A Bronx Tale, Calogero ignores his working-class father to grow up under the wing of a notorious gangster Sonny. Both boys have issues with their fathers that lead to problems later in their lives.
In a recent podcast, Film Comment explored the film function most regularly maligned by, well, the magazine's core demographic: jerking tears. And they wisely included among that week's panel one of high culture's lone remaining proponents of craft-driven cinematic populism: Mark Harris. The panel congregated around writer-director Kenneth Lonergan's funereal Manchester by the Sea, understandably, but one regrets that they didn't wait a few weeks for the arrival of David Frankel's Collateral Beauty, to contrast thesis with antithesis. Not every tear tastes bittersweet.
The easiest way for a writer, producer, or director to pull his/her audience in is through emotion. When a director tugs at the heartstrings of his/her directed audience, immediately a bond has been formed.
The next factors is my gender, age, ethnicity, and social class. As a female evaluating a movie I am more likely to showcase emotion to situation than a male. My age has an impact on everything because my generation has technology at our fingertips. Lastly, for me ethnicity and social class is one in the same. It helped me evaluate the movie because I was able to relate to the main character and form a mental
Steven Spielberg is one of the most successful directors in history, his movies have changed the way to make movies and also have given people the type of movies they want to see. Spielberg has touched the life of many people through his movies, it is probably the outcome of being passionate about his work and loving what he does (“Steven Spielberg as a Role Model”, 2007). His movies are full of human relationships and connections between people, and that is probably what it has influenced nowadays’ cinema (Stephens, 2010). People want to feel emotions and see themselves reflected on the screen, people having troubles and getting over them, people connecting with other people and having emotions like real human beings. Steven has focused a
A bad movie can be identified by many elements, but a huge indicator can be when a filmmaker does not understand what genre film they are making. David Pegg, a film critic, catoragazed bad moves as “Horror movies that make you laugh and action movies that make you cry” (Pegg). When a horror movie is so awful at delivering horror that it makes the audience laugh in a theater instead of scream, the film is certain to fail. When an action movie has such bad acting and poor story that the audience begins to cry from confusion and uncomfortableness, the movie has failed to be a good movie.
Since the beginning of time, movies have always been a way to display social conflicts in a certain period of time to a large audience. Movies can evoke various emotions from different people, thus making it a great medium for directors to get their point across. For instance, movies can provide a feel good mood, but can also provide a lesson at the same time; Finding Nemo perfected this through a feel good moment when Nemo was able to reunited with his dad. One of the director’s point was to display a father’s love for his son, and that he would fight to the very end in order to find his son. Movies such as Finding Nemo are classics because of the emotions that it can evoke and the important theme it displays. Each renowned director throughout
In cinematography, as Quentin Tarantino discusses in an interview, the director is the conductor and the audience’s feelings are the instrument that directors utilize to evoke emotion. Directors have many tools they use to evoke the viewer’s emotions and properly captivate the audience. One of the tools directors use to control the audience, in addition to special effects, is dialogue. Dialogue has the power to push an audience to tears when a character dies, or make them laugh at the same scene with different dialogue between the characters. This dialogue is only possible through the creation of a storyworld where absurd dialogue would be deemed appropriate. This is what makes Quentin Tarantino such an effective director, he has mastered the skill of controlling the audience’s emotions through establishing a storyworld, and using dialogue with his horrifying scenes. His mastery of evoking emotion can be seen in many of his films. Most notably in Pulp Fiction, which won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best screenplay. In Pulp Fiction, the viewer finds him or herself in a whirlwind of emotion, laughing in horror at horrendous acts of violence. The emotions that are elicited while watching these intense scenes are possible because of the dialogue Quentin Tarantino uses. He masters the ability to evoke emotion through outrageous scenes in combination with memorable dialogue. The social norms within a storyworld, as well as characters ridiculous interactions with each other,
In films, emotion plays an important element. It’s a powerful yet a simple way to capture the audience. Good screenwriters can create scenes that help the viewers relate to a character by incorporating emotion which forms a meaningful bond with the audience that helps make a film more engaging and enjoyable to watch. This is observable in virtually any film, whether it’s a live action film with real actors or an animation film by Disney where all the characters are born with a writing utensil on a canvas. With further contribution and guidance from the director, adding additional cinematography elements such as camera position and lighting techniques help enhance the emotion that the director wants the audience to see in their films. Byron Howard and Rich Moore’s clever usage of long shot along with low and high key lighting in their animated film Zootopia help enrich emotional empathy of the two main characters Judy and Nick reestablishing their broken friendship.
Many Hollywood movies are obvious about the direction the film is going to go. Plots are usually straightforward in the sense that the goals of the protagonists are clear, and there is a linear progression towards their objectives after each overcome obstacle. To have the audience absorbed into the world of the movie is the ambition. If the audience is captivated, then most likely they will think that the movie was good. The Berlin School challenges the conventional approaches to film making. Films from this school try to prove that movies can be well received without adhering to pre-established techniques. The way the limits are tested is by exploring the character’s motives, the means they use to satiate those desires, and why. To do this Berlin school films implement characters with complexity. Meaning that the characters have a series of layers of emotions and thoughts that are often conflicting with each other. These thoughts and emotions are going to be withheld from us though. Therefore, the audience is delegated the task of interpreting sometimes subtle hints from dialogue, facial expressions, the setting, and events to inference why things are happening, rather than only what is happening. The viewers take on the role of detached observers. As a result, the character’s interactions with the world, now whilst considering their motives) becomes the plot device of choice. A downfall to this demanding approach is the potential
This essay will be covering Quentin Tarantino an American director, writer, and actor. His films are characterized by non-chronological storylines, satirical subject matter, and violence. Tarantino is not only a fantastic writer but a tremendous filmmaker. He has won multiple Oscars for his films. The man to me is a genius in the film industry. Throughout this essay, I will speak of what makes a Tarantino movie, how Tarantino 's Screenplays are a nice change of pace, how he changed how I view dialogue, his well thought out characters, amazing writing, and his use of other films as inspiration.
I’m standing in line at the OMSI empirical theatre with my sister and friend, I looked down at the ticket in my hands, and I got a surge of excitement throughout my body. I knew I was going to see one of the best movies in my entire life. I knew that everyone in that line was going to as well; reason being it was a Hayao Miyazaki movie, the founder of Studio Ghibli- one of Japan’s biggest franchise. I could say I have never been acquainted with a soul who thought negatively towards these movies created by Hayao Miyazaki. He is a very thought-provoking being, someone who can make you inspired and passionate towards living and breathing. Not to mention each one of his key characters is a woman filled with independence and integrity, which so often is not, emphasized enough. Correspondingly, I looked down at my ticket a hundred times or more, the movie I was seeing was ‘Porco Rosso’. The title may seem very strange in a sense, but this movie was a piece of art, so much so, when it ended I had tears streaming down my cheeks and I walked crying out the theatre. That is how much it moved me, but this isn’t the only exclusive anime saga that has made me cried before, my sister being included in this culture as much as I am, together we watched ‘Blood +’ an anime romance. The end of that I’m sure I went through twenty boxes of tissues. Genuinely, it felt good to feel this kind of emotion- nonetheless; this kind of culture has made millions of people like me feel empathetic towards
