In life at some point there will be crossroads that a person must cross, they can either look back at what they have done to end up in that position or they can look forward and see what they must do to continue moving forward.

In “All Summer in a Day”, the authority figure is the nine-year-old schoolboy William. The dark story takes place on Venus, where it rains constantly and only one hour of sunlight is witnessed every seven years. The students who live on Venus are unaware of the joy that the sun can potentially bring to them because they were not old enough to appreciate it during its last appearance seven years ago. Young Margot moved from Ohio to Venus five years ago. Therefore, she had recently experienced the sun and even had the ability to properly describe it in her poem as “a flower, that blooms for just one hour.”

Sometimes we have to push through the challenges life gives us to achieve our goals. Ally, who the author implies is blind, cannot bear to lose her pride and pushes through her hardships. Doodle, a little boy whose body is weaker than his mind, perseveres to show his older brother his strength. Ally in “You Need to go Upstairs” by Rumer Godden and Doodle in “The Scarlet Ibis” by both show great determination through the struggles life gives them. While pushing through to their goal, both Ally and Doodle fail many times.

Try conceptualizing a world with perpetual rain. This is the world that Bradbury creates in his short story, “All Summer In a Day. A group of scientists and their children live on Venus, a planet that only sees the sun for an hour every seven years. The kids that immigrated here are only 9 years old. They do not remember the sun, as they have only seen the sun once, 7 years ago. But, there is a girl named Margot. Unlike the other kids, she was born on earth and moved to Venus 5 years ago. She has distinct memories of the sun. This causes her to stand out from the other kids. The loss of the sun causes her to grieve. The children living on Venus treat Margot mercilessly in jealousy due to her prior knowledge and experiences. This causes Margot to be a victim of depression, harassment, and denial.

In fact, these boys grow rushingly until they reach the height where they could no longer grow because their heads ?abruptly bump against?(5) the low ceiling of their actual possibilities. These boys see no sense for their life, as there is nothing that can motivate them to study and believe that they will actually succeed:

Throughout our lifetime we go through a variety of challenging changes that may affect our future, Joseph O'Connor, a Lee high school graduate, and I are just a few of many examples. In his article, “A View from Mount Ritter”, O’Connor shares a horrific life changing experience on a two-week expedition in northeastern California. O'Connor a regular stubborn teenager, gets trapped in a frightening storm on the second week with another expeditioner. As soon as the storm starts to calm they starts to search for the driest place to set camp, realizing it was the worst night of his life O’Conner decides to turn his life around by turning his poor academic grades around and deciding to go to college. O'Connor's purpose is to inform and educate his readers to realize how precious life is and how it should not be taken for granted. He supports his purpose with a personal experience, concluding with “No man knows till he has suffered from the night how sweet and how dear to his heart and eye morning can be”. Based on O'Connor's experience and my own, the quotation reveals a truth, a truth that people must endure a struggle in order to appreciate one's life.

Margot, who is only 9 years old, wasn't born on Venus like the other children, but instead on Earth. She’s the only one who remembers how the sun felt through her skin and how beautiful it shined. On the contrary, the other children are jealous of her because she has some memory of the sun, while they don’t. Jealousy caused the children to harass, isolate, and make her depressed.

Everyone needs to believe that things are going to get better, particularly when facing challenging or troubling times. Our world is fraught with sadness, misfortune, and adversity, and the world constructed by Ray Bradbury in “All Summer in a Day” is no different. Unending rain, gray skies, and endless dark doldrums beneath the surface of Venus plague the lives of the young children in his short story. And yet, every night when they go to sleep, the young protagonists hope for more. Despite being surrounded by a gray plague of ceaseless rain, the children dream of the sun. In “All Summer in a Day,” Bradbury uses the sun throughout the text to symbolize hope.

Life is full of decision making, and many obstacles that will come in your way to try and stop your path and prevent you from achieving what you must achieve. In the poems “A Laughing Heart,” by Charles Bukowski, and “The Journey,” by Mary Oliver, the authors both meet at describing what life is like and how to live life like the fullest, even though there will be things to stop you, and you may stop yourself. Both of these poems point out that you have to be the main character in your life, you have to beat everybody or every obstacle that will trouble you, you must overcome it to achieve the highest points of your life. In “The Laughing Heart,” the author says “and the more often you learn to do it, the more light there will be.” (14, 15). Charles Bukowski is saying that if you learn to successfully overcome your obstacles, your life will continually get better because there are less problems to face. A similar line in “The Journey,” is “...as you left their voices behind,/ the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds,/ and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own,” (24-29). The author is saying that as you started to seize opportunity, solve problems and face challenges in your life, you became stronger, and you became the main character in your life. The theme of these two poems is that your life is your life, and even though you will have to overcome obstacles and face challenges, you must be the main character in your life to live your
