I tend to agree with John about the overall topics of the article. The concepts of safety-critical systems goes far beyond our belief. With the increase of technology in the 21st century, the idea of most modern machinery being developed or operated by a computer has become the defined norm. In the process of developing safety-critical software, there is the common assumption that the program will be tested thoroughly for life threating errors. As such, effective communication among developers must be enforced to ensure that proper instructions are delivered and assumptions are dismissed. 1. Creativity, critical thinking, ethical discussion and cultural awareness are fundamental skills to succeed in training students for the 21st century (Section 1, Page 38).
As a world that is becoming ever so diverse, companies require a lot more out of college graduates than they did 20 years ago. It no longer matters about the ability to do a job, but how well you can complete that job under various circumstances. As such, employers are interested just as much into creativity, critical thinking, ethical discussion, and cultural awareness as they are into your work experience. Companies are growing in the ability for teams to become creative in their work that helps enhance critical thinking. Companies are growing in diversity and as such allow employee to become more culturally aware. No longer is it just all white men in cubicles, it’s now men and woman from various countries all having a group discussion about a current project.

Education is one of the important factors that determine a sustainability future. What to teach is also a biggest concern for education. On one hand, educators want to teach the knowledge that is useful for the students in society today. However, some also argue that people should learn critical thinking not just teaching skill-centered knowledge. According to Diane Ravitch, believes that the new from of education called “21st century skills” which just focus on teaching the skills to prepare people for the global economy, and neglects the importance of other subjects such as literature, history and art. She suggests that these subjects help not just help students think critically, but also let them think beyond the concept and see the world widely.
Some of these skills include having the students collaborate, connect, create and communicate using these critical thinking skills of the 21st century. The outcome is that students will take their interest in writing and drawing in their school work to create answers for issues or intriguing thoughts on paper. The students in my classroom will work at their own pace utilizing devices that best address their issues.
Understand cultural competence and why is it important especially for that have a diverse workforce.
A high level of interconnectedness between system components, reliance on indirect information sources, an unpredictable environment, or incomprehensibility of a system to its operators indicates complexity within a system (Perrow, 1999). Since systems are designed, run and built by humans, they cannot be perfect. Every part of the system is subject to failure; the design can be faulty, as can the equipment, the procedures, the operators, the supplies, and the environment. Since nothing is perfect, humans build in safeguards, such as redundancies, buffers, and alarms that tell operators to take corrective action. But occasionally two or more failures can interact in ways that could not be anticipated. These unexpected interactions of failures can defeat the safeguards, and if the system is also “tightly coupled” thus allowing failures to cascade, it can bring down a part or all of system. The vulnerability to unexpected interactions that defeat safety systems is an inherent part of highly complex systems; they cannot avoid this (Perrow, 1984).
Today’s management in the workforce is composed of all types of people verses thirty years ago when white males held a majority of upper-management positions in companies. These positions are now held by a mixture of ethnic back grounds and women who hold just as many if not more management positions then men. As our text tells us, safety critical software must undergo a development and testing process that is much more rigorous and time consuming than the processes used in the development and testing of other types of software. The system must be coded carefully, inspected, documented, tested, verified, and analyzed. There must be a product safety engineer assigned to the system, a hazard log implemented and risk analysis performed as core developmental processes. (Reynolds 276) The software development process should not be carried out by a single software engineer, but rather by a properly organized team that can audit, and if needed, correct one another 's work. Computers help make daily discoveries in almost all areas of society expanding our understanding of the world. Problem-solving using the power of computers requires teaching students how to confront problems in a way that creates these solutions (Wing, 2006, p. 33). In her article Computational Thinking, Wing proposes that this strategy should be a fundamental skill, just like reading and writing, a foundation for every student (p. 33).

There are many advantages to having this percentage of people from different cultures throughout our workplace. One is the increase in creativeness.
