In concert band, I have been first chair since 7th grade. I have to learn music of all different styles and perform them for audiences. In marching band, I have been lead flutist, woodwind captain, and more recently I have earned the title of being drum major. As drum major, I conduct the band and provide an example for my peers. I am required to model leadership, responsibility, dedication, and
A Drum Major is a positive role-model; someone who others can look to as an enthusiastic and dedicated example. A Drum Major ultimately leads the band, and does so energetically and humbly. Respecting those around you and gaining the respect and trust of peers is essential. As Drum Major, one is expected to treat others with kindness and integrity. A Drum Major is someone who is fully involved and invested in their band and peers, and is someone who works to serve others. As a Drum Major, one must put the band first and support those around him or her. Effective communication skills are imperative, as a drum major must have an effective voice, yet also be an effective listener. A Drum Major
Tonic performed at the BMO Harris Pavilion stage at Summerfest on the last day of the festival. The band took the stage at 5pm (Central standard time), and opened their gig with "Open Up Your Eyes." The song was featured on Tonic's Lemon Parade project, which was released in 1996. Summerfest's artist lineup was had several 1990s bands, some of them included Smash Mouth and Toad the Wet Sprocket. It seems fans of the other bands also flocked to the Pavilion to see Tonic play, and the venue was almost at full-capacity.
Above all, I have a huge desire for helping people succeed. I do not want anyone feeling like they cannot do something. Anything is possible if you try. This marching season I want to see everyone succeed. Marching band is a group effort! We help each other and we work hard. As drum major, it is important to want to help others succeed and to motivate them to do it. This quality and all the others mentioned are what I believe make me a superior candidate for drum
The band is in the stadium. The announcer calls “Upperman High School” jarring each ear with anxiety. The band is called to attention in preparation for the score call. The band stands at attention with each drop of sweat intensifying the setting. Rome wasn’t built in a day. The members of the band spend weeks or even months of preparation for this moment. The key to their preparation is their band area where they utilize the band room, the practice field, and the trophies. What they do in this band territory will now decide the next ten seconds of their lives.
We have been in band since the fifth grade and gained a tremendous amount of music knowledge. In the middle school years we sought out more experience by starting a jazz ensemble. After middle school, We joined all aspects of band and participated in every event possible. Through our three years of marching experience we led the our respective sections. We focused on making sure our rows and lines were straight. Keeping in step was also a very important
I already have leadership experience within the SIHS band so I understand what is expected of me and what I need to do. When I was Flag Captain, I had the responsibility of keeping track of a section and I would like to do that for the entire band. One of my strongest traits is my musical abilities. When I started playing instruments, I played the viola. I did that for three years, but then once I got to high school, I wanted to not do just color guard, but concert band- so I taught myself the bassoon. Once it was time for jazz band I realized I probably couldn't play bassoon there (even though that'd be pretty cool) I decided I wanted to play saxophone so I taught myself that as well. Aside from my primary instruments if I can try any instrument to get a better understanding of it I definitely take the opportunity. With the different instruments I’ve been exposed to reading treble, alto, tenor and bass clef, which comes in handy when reading a score and helping certain sections. Since I can read and play different kinds of music I am able to help more people in band with playing and fixing their music which is beneficial for a Drum Major. I also like to listen to many styles of music like various classical genres or jazz. If I hear a song or solo, I get the music, then try to learn and perfect
Band has become my second home and my drum has become my heart. They have shown me that I am capable of more than I think. I’ve been able to discover more about myself being in percussion than I was while playing flute. My family is the people I go and spend 9 days out of the week
The end of junior year in high school I ran for band president against 6 other people; I ended up winning. I was the 2016 band president for Midwest city high school, I was very nervous for this new adventure. It was time for summer band, the first day of summer band was for freshman and band parents, I had to speak in front of 200 people. The next day was full band, it was time to start summer band officially. Practicing in the heat is the worst part of being in marching band, its long and hot and people always get sunburnt. Through the long hot days and playing good music and making new memories is the best part of marching band. My senior year I became a very good musician, I spent more time in the practice room and preceded my speaking
Marching band is a great activity. I get to have a lot of fun while performing for marching band. I get to work hard for an amazing goal. Marching band is place I can feel really accepted.
Whenever I recieved the title of Drum Major for my marching band, I was awestruck. I am always self critical about anything that I do, and the fact that not one, but four people thought that I did well astounded me. Being a Drum Major is not just testing the ablity to conduct, it is also testing the ablility to be a leader. I thought of myself as quiet and reserved in most cases, especially around new people. Being a Drum Major meant that you were involved in training the freshman and any new people involved in the marching band. This really pushed me outside of my comfort zone; I had to not only talk to many new people, but also lead them in a way that was new to me. In the beginning, it was difficult for me, but I thought of it as just meeting a new person, 50
As drum major it is your responsibility to take care of the band and lead them to victory doing what is best for them. It teaches you to be as selfless as possible, you learn that it is not all about you but that everything needs to be done for the best of everybody. However, as I have had to learn this year, in order to accomplish this it takes explaining to each member what you are trying to achieve in terms they understand, as not everyone learns the same. Learning this I believe has made me a better
As a drummer, you’re the band’s timekeeper. You need to handle the pressure of “reeling in” the other musicians when they get lost in soloing and lose the beat. You’ll need to get used to assuming a leadership role in that regard. Drummers aren’t out front onstage like singers or guitarists, but they are responsible for building a band’s musical foundation.
On February 25, 2016 the Windiana Concert Band gave their winter concert, in the University Theatre at the Valparaiso University Center for the Arts, in Valparaiso, Indiana. The guest artist was Shelly Sager, a music teacher at Flint Lake Elementary School in Valparaiso. The Windiana Concert Band was conducted by Jeffrey Scott Doebler, who has been a musical director since 1992. Although, the band plays a wide variety of music, this concert was filled with classical musical.
A Drum Major is someone dedicated to the music program in all of its aspects. Marching Band must be that person’s number one priority outside of school and their core values(family, religion, etc.). A Drum Major has leadership abilities and is able to work well with others and is able to convey the needs of the Band Director on the field. Communication is key as leadership are the ones keeping the flow of information within the
When I encounter difficulties, like recently not being chosen for the highest level concert band, I cry. I then talk to my mom about how I’m feeling and she helps comfort me and calm me down. I also text my mentor, Melody, about the situation and how I reacted and feel about it. I like to take a shower, sit on my bed, drive around town, and listen to For All Seasons. Their music always speaks to me and comforts me whenever I’m having a bad day. I feel that God speaks to me in different ways every time I hear their songs. I also use those songs to help me pray, especially when I do not feel like I can pray. They contain simple truths about who I am, who God is, and who I am to God. When I am going through a difficulty, I often forget those truths,
