In evaluating the conflict, I interpreted the parties’ behavior based upon the Exchange Theory, in which Republic Services was willing to risk their relationship with the Eagle City Council and the residents of Eagle as they strived to minimize costs associated with workman’s compensation claims, as well as increase their rewards through additional revenue from additional containers serviced. Their goal of reducing workplace injuries had no data to correlate a connection of workplace injuries with plastic garbage bags. In fact, when Mr. Van Arnum initially addressed the policy change with Ms. Klein, he was informed that the decision was made to lesson workman’s compensation claims, in which Mr. Van Arnum asked for data showing how many claims …show more content…
I also question the thought process in allowing paper bags during a four week period in November is a safer alternative than plastic garbage bags. I don’t feel paper bags would protect their employees any better from broken glass and Sharps, paper bags don’t close at the top which enables homeowners to overfilled them, as well paper bags don’t have handles to grab which forces the employee to exercise SAFELIFT techniques during collection, which in turn could increase back injuries if not used or used improperly. In addition, I feel that Ms. Klein’s exhibited social exchange theory behavior; she went against the homeowners to enforce a policy that had no legal standing in exchange for the rewarding relationship of her employer. In essence, I feel like she threw the homeowners under the bus; she did whatever she felt was necessary to fulfill her employers wish. That being said, when the Eagle City Council announced that the plastic garbage bag restriction was not in the contract, Ms. Klein started to back pedal to save face. She indicated her and Republic Services’ assumption of the
The mission Statement for Waste Management Inc. is, “As North America’s leading provider of comprehensive waste management services, our mission is to maximize resource value while minimizing impact in order to further both economic and environmental sustainability for all of our stakeholders”. As one reads their mission statement, a picture of integrity, responsibility, and protection for all their community members comes to mind. Unfortunately, during the years between 1992 and 1997, WM’s management let their greed blind them to these commitments. At which time they started to make fraudulent inputs into the accounting books by inflating salvage values and extending the useful life of the garbage
In this paper I will discuss the conflict that is occurring at General Hospital, the conflict management styles that are evident in the case, and how General Hospital could have used teams to address the cost reductions needed to stay competitive. I will also describe how the CEO of General Hospital, Mike Hammer can us negotiation skills to get buy-in for the cost reductions and finally I will recommend a strategy for Hammer to resolve the problem.
Whether you work for a manufacturing facility or the health care system, conflict is unavoidable. As a manager, you must learn to deal with conflict in the workplace. In this paper I will describe the different styles of conflict management. I will also discuss my preferred conflict management style with examples of its use. Lastly, I will describe a situation at work and how a conflict management strategy could have improved that situation.
Some of the pros of having the religious status around the capitol building would be expressing the religious diversity within the state. It would also be a moral compass for the legislatures. Lastly, it would show that all religions are equal in the eyes of that state. Some of the cons would be two statuses with contradicting religions, like Christianity and Satanism, could end up right beside each other and cause an up roar among the people. Plus, there would never be an end to all the statues that need to be made because there are just too many religions. Finally, the Constitution states to keep religion away from state affairs, so the statues may violate those amendments. If I had to decide a how to resolve the conflict, I would remove the statue of Jesus and try to keep religion away from the government. The other possible solution would to provide statues for every religion.
1a. Who was involved in the conflict? What was the relationship between the participants prior to the conflict? Did it appear as if the relationship between the participants had any impact on how either person responded to the conflict?
The claims that plastic bags are worse for the environment over reusable bags are deceitful. Compared to paper bags, plastic grocery bags produce fewer greenhouse gases, require 70 percent less energy to make, generate 80 percent, less waste, and utilize less than 4 percent of the amount of water needed to make them. The reason for this is because plastic bags are lighter and take up less space. Another reason reusable bags aren't as useful is because they are more prone to food contamination if not washed properly. A study found that San Francisco’s plastic bag ban in 2007 resulted in more visits to the hospital from patients suffering E. coli, salmonella, and other infectious diseases from
When big name brand CSR got involved in waste management and planned to develop a dump site in Werribee they underestimated the backlash that would come, in the process of trying to control the fire they made several PR fiascos. One of the mistakes CSR made when they unveiled the landfill proposal was attempting to disguise the risk factors in hopes that it would create passivity within the community. In their proposal, they summarised that the landfill would be protected by a double clay liner and a leachate collection system, would be state of the art and most importantly would be monitored and regulated by the EPA. In response to this members of the Werribee community highlighted the dangers the landfill would create, these risks included fires, spillages and dust storms that could cross contaminate crops. As a large farming community the crops were an essential source of revenue for the local economy, it would also put the tourism industry under threat. The landfill presented economic, environmental and social risk factors and CSR failed to take the community 's concerns seriously (van Moorst 2001).
Having thoroughly looked over the list of core requirements and discussed with Hannah, one of our student success leaders, about some of the different courses, I came to the conclusion that I would like to take the following classes eventually.
Opponents of privatization argue that "any cost savings are attributable to reductions in service quality or to worker exploitation, especially through lower wages and fewer benefits." (Ibid. 14). They argue further that "the free market has little sensitivity to the issue of equity...and if unfettered may be expected to exclude nonpaying customers-even if the "public good" would be served by universal access." (Ibid. 14). In a study on trash collection, while the contractual refuse collections was found to
As nurses, it is imperative that we have skills to deal with conflict we encounter throughout the day. Some conflicts are easily handled with simple solutions; other disagreements can persist for weeks or even months and never be handled in a proper way to resolve the situation. The later kind of situation can create resentment, anger, and animosity between employees or colleagues. In this paper I will describe a conflict situation with resolution strategies used by the confronter, discuss other ways to resolve the conflict, and discuss the conflict theory most beneficial to use with a diverse group of people.
Conflict is a fact of life - for individuals, organizations, and societies. The costs of conflict are well-documented - high turnover, grievances and lawsuits, absenteeism, divorce, dysfunctional families, prejudice, fear. What many people don't realize is that well-managed conflict can actually be a force for positive change.
In regards to the employee who got upset at his manager feeling unfairly passed over for a promotion, one would suggest a positive approach to deal with such a conflict would be through empathic understanding and negotiation. Rogersn (as cited in Kottler, 2004) outlines empathy as the process of attempting to acknowledge, from the client’s frame of reference, the thoughts and feelings underlying behavior. Negotiation happens among two or more interdependent parties who have acknowledged conflict between their needs and desires yet believe a negotiated outcome is greater and better to what they could achieve unilaterally (Raines, 2012). The manager could accommodate and offer to promote the employee in the next set of months if certain deadlines are met.
Like most company today Bank of America has become very conflict competent by implying an integrated conflict management system. They have integrated a Code of Conduct in their workplace and have organizations within their company to specifically deal with conflict resolution. Throughout history most major companies, like Bank of America, have changed their views on how they treated their employees to create an efficient work group. Major companies began to realize that conflict is normal and happens naturally and found the urgency to deal with it instead of ignoring situations. With the change of time companies begun to realize that it is cost efficient and extremely productive to rely on a resolution system.
Alper, S., Tjosvold, D., & Law, K. S. (2000). Conflict management, efficacy, and performance in organizational teams. Personnel Psychology, 53(3), 625-642. This study looked at the management of conflict and linked it empirically with organizational team and efficacy research. There were sixty-one teams with nearly 500 employees studied, all belonging to a leading manufacturer of electronic products. A structural equation analysis was used to show that a cooperative approach to conflict is more effective than a competitive approach to same. Making use of autonomy can also make a person or a team more productive.
Conflict Management Arbitration and Mediation It is well recognized that the availability of prompt, effective and economical means of dispute resolution is an important element in the orderly growth and encouragement of international investment and trade. Increasingly, arbitration and mediation, instead of litigation in national courts, have become the preferred means of resolving international commercial disputes. Arbitration: Arbitration is a procedure in which a dispute is submitted, by agreement of the parties, to an arbitrator or to a tribunal of several arbitrators who give a decision on the dispute that is binding on the parties. In contrast to mediation, once the parties have freely agreed to submit a dispute to arbitration, a party cannot unilaterally withdraw from the arbitration. Expedited Arbitration: Expedited Arbitration is, as its name suggests, a form of arbitration in which certain modifications are introduced in order to ensure that the arbitration can be conducted and an award rendered in a shortened time frame and, consequently, at a reduced cost. To achieve those objectives, the modifications provide for a sole arbitrator (rather than a tribunal of several arbitrators), shortened time periods for each of the steps involved in the arbitration proceedings, and condensed hearings before the sole arbitrator. Mediation Followed, in the Absence of a Settlement, by Arbitration: This procedure combines, sequentially, both mediation and arbitration. Where the
