The movie Divergent is based off the acclaimed novel by Veronica Roth which has sold millions of copies world-wide. It is mainly a coming of age story in a dystopian society that is beginning to undergo a revolution. The lead heroine, Tris, must suffer many tragedies before realizing who she is told to be and who she really is. Many films in this genre have common thematic elements such as tragedy, conformity, and betrayal. Divergent is a story of coming of age, because Tris undertakes a transformation caused by a revolution in a society that was built to protect against such a revolt. In the dystopian society that Tris lives in, the people there live in five different factions according to the virtues they cherish the most. There are the Amity who cherish peace and happiness, the Abnegation who cherish selflessness, the Candor who cherish honesty, the Erudite who cherish knowledge, and the Dauntless who cherish fearlessness. This is one of the biggest examples of conformity in the film. At the age of sixteen the youth go through a faction test which determines which faction they are most likely to be happy in. However, in Tris’s case, she is Divergent, which means she has aptitude for multiple factions. It is not widely …show more content…
Tris has never really felt at home in Abnegation so she switches to Dauntless. Normally this would not be so harsh on her family, but her only brother also switches to another faction called Erudite leaving her parents with no family within Abnegation. This is Tris’s first betrayal and it makes her very guilty. After the choosing ceremony each faction goes through its own initiation. For Dauntless, the initiates must jump off a building in order to enter the compound. Generally the first jumper is a Dauntless born, but Tris is brave enough to go
1984 and Divergent have many similarities which include determining their faction/parties, drug usage, and uniforms, which tell the differences between each differing level member. There are also differences in each of these books, too.
Divergent is a dystopian novel that takes place in a futuristic Chicago. The setting also looks like a perfect Utopia, but as you go on reading you find out that it has a lot of problems. In the novel there was a war that was caused by differences in people's ideologies. The war caused Chicago to be divided into five factions. Each faction has a virtue which they value and cultivate. The five factions are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. Throughout the novel the main character is Tris which was born in Abnegation and chose to go to the Dauntless faction. Chicago in the novel is governed by a group of people from
George Orwell’s political parable, 1984, portrays an oppressive and dictatorial government, which thereby presents to the reader a palpable sense of danger and malevolence born out of the creation of a counter utopic totalitarian regime. Orwell’s nihilistic creation of Oceania, presents a world wherein every aspect of private and public life is abhorrently regimented and regulated by the autocratic ‘Big Brother’. The whole population at large is forced to conform to the ideals and beliefs of the tyrannical ‘party’ as a means of not only survival but also a means of being able to live an unabated existence. The party opposes all forms of individuality and
The war was terrible, the whole world was destroyed. The last city left divided themselves into five factions to keep the peace. The smart ones are classified Erudite. Amity are always kind, Candor value honesty, Dauntless are brave, and Abnegation are selfless. The system works because everyone knows where they belong; everyone except for Tris. In the novel Divergent, by Veronica Roth, Tris demonstrates perseverance; this is shown through how she is able to step out of her comfort zone, always remains undeterred, and can overcome obstacles.
In Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World, Huxley creates a futuristic world governed by conformity and submission to society. Citizens of this World State are conditioned to follow a set lifestyle determined at birth in order to create a stable civilization. However, there is still some form of individuality in each person, specifically in the characters Bernard, Lenina, and Linda. Within each of these characters, their difference in personality does not fit the norms of society, and they therefore try to suppress their own traits with unique methods such as soma. In times of sadness and despair, Bernard, Lenina, and Linda each give up a part of their own individuality and ideology, sticking to the
Many individuals is faced with the decision of conforming or choosing personal desire, and it is not an easy decision. It is hard because being shunned by others for being different is not a good feeling. Choosing to conform over personal desire, often leads to loss. On the other hand, personal desire is what sets others apart and gives them joy. In the poem, “The Jackhammer Syndrome”, Al Purdy discusses the good and bad memories he has experienced. He goes through his memories of when he had fun and made mistakes, but he reflects on what he could have done better. The author of “The Jackhammer Syndrome informs against choosing the welcoming joy of conformity over the long-term gains of personal desire. Making the decision to pursue conformity over personal desire may seem easy at first, but if the choice is to conform, the joy it gives will not last. Making the decision to pursue conformity over personal desire Conformity may seem to give joy at first, but it does not last. When Al is playing pool with his brother, he wants to win badly, but losses. However when he did not care to win, Al wins! Conforming can lead to loss but personal desire has much to gain. If the choice is to conform, personal identity may be lost. In my life, I recognize several instances in which I found several similarities between Al and myself. I have made decisions that were not always good ones such as swimming across long distances with friends.
Social aspects in the novel 1984 conforms to the conventions of the dystopian genre. Specifically, fear of the outside world and foreign people is spread to promote reliance on the government. “Then the sheep-face melted into the figure of an Eurasian soldier who seemed to be advancing, huge and terrible, his submachine gun roaring and seeming to spring out of the surface of the screen, so that some of the people in the front row actually flinched backwards in their seats. But then in the same moment, drawing a deep sigh of relief from everybody, the hostile figure melted into the face of Big Brother…” (Orwell 15). This was Orwell’s description of the climax, when the treacherous Goldstein turns into an Eurasian killing machine by spraying
Divergence gives people the ability to control your mind control tests making it hard for people to be able to read you. And in this book the government doesn’t exactly like not having the power. The dystopian society within Ayn Rand’s Anthem utilizes diction to convey a strict collectivist theme and enforce both unity and equality among its members. Following the Great Rebirth, the futuristic society portrayed in this novella has a profound fear of returning to the Unmentionable Times. This time period is illegal and immoral to acknowledge, for something went terribly wrong and influenced the government’s decision of maintaining complete control over everyone and everything in the society through the use of language. The fear of reliving the past erases the basic concepts of freedom and individuality, giving members of society no purpose other than that of serving the government as a cohesive group. Although the society successfully enforces collectivism by owning its member’s identities and by stripping its member’s vocabularies of personal pronouns, it fails to outsmart the rebellious protagonist of the novella.
In the beginning, Tris has to decide to trust Evelyn, the leader of the factionless, and her goal of establishing a factionless society. Tris has a hard time understanding why Evelyn would want to destroy the faction
The movie Divergent is based on the novel by Veronica Roth. The book and film takes place in future Chicago where there are five factions; Dauntless, Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, and Candor. People in future Chicago take a test to determine what faction is most like them. If multiple factions are the result of the test, then it is determined that the person is Divergent. This is a rare story of Beatrice Prior’s experience as being Divergent and surviving in the Dauntless community.
The main character in the book Divergent is a girl named Beatrice. Beatrice is developed throughout the book by having to do things that push her out of her comfort zone. Beatrice was born in the faction of Abnegation, where everything is simple and alike. Abnegation values selflessness, but Beatrice doesn’t feel like she is selfless. She decides to change to the faction of Dauntless, who values courage. Beatrice has to do things like jump off trains, and fight people to show she is courageous. She decides to start going byTris, because Beatrice won’t fit in with the dauntless. When Beatrice makes the decision to be a dauntless she says “My fathers eyes burn into mine with a look of accusation’. This is because it was selfish of
This is no exception in the book Divergent. The society in Divergent split into five distinct factions known as Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. From this information, one can infer the worldview depicted in this novel is that one choice defines who a person is forever. This worldview is seen all throughout the book, due to the author’s focus on choice. The characters are forced to choose which faction they wish to reside in, thus possibly leaving all that they previously had known and grown accustomed to. This reality is brutally true for Beatrice Prior as she is forced to come to grips with making this type of decision. Upon making her ultimate decision to join Dauntless she states, “This is what I chose. This is it.” Numerous other decisions are put in front of Beatrice Prior throughout the plot, therefore proving the worldview in Divergent to be rooted in decisions and choices. These choices, in turn, have a long-term effect on someone’s life. The worldview in any novel is brought to life by the author. Taking a look at the author of Divergent, known as Veronica Roth, one immediately comes to the conclusion that she is a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. She freely professes her faith and love for the Lord; therefore, one can see the intricate parallels from Divergent to the Scriptures. For example, the concept of one choice defining the rest of a person’s life or destiny is similar to the monumental choice made in the Garden of Eden, which
Mass public schooling has created a divide amongst the foundation of whether to prioritize individuality or conformity. If we as a society choose to base schooling off of the guidelines of conformity, the individuality in each and every student will soon be lost due to being forced to comply to the school system, therefore hindering student’s sense of individuality. Prioritizing individuality in the schools allows students to be free of constraints, and to increase their want to learn through being able to differentiate and personalize their schedules. An education system based off of forcing individual and different students to all follow the exact same course standard should be outlawed due to this being an outdated guideline of teaching.
The ending of the Divergent series was very controversial. The readers were split into two sides: those who believed Tris's death was realistic, and those who thought it was out of character. The former side accepted Tris's decision to go into the death serum in her brother's place as believable. They thought it was a natural action for Tris, even though Caleb betrayed her. The latter side saw Tris's decision as unbelievable. They didn't believe it was in Tris's nature to walk towards death for someone who stabbed her in the back. Allegiant is a prime example of how a person's decision can bring multiple reactions, good and bad. Roth didn't go the normal route of saving the main character. She made a decision that she knew would never please everyone, so she went with what she believed was
