How Did August Wilson Affect African American Culture

What if there weren't any people willing to break societal norms? What if every person stayed confined to what is socially acceptable in life? There would be no great plays, bands or artists in this world, we would be greatly affected by this conformity. We would not have the great August Wilson to credit for inspiring many great playwrights. In August Wilson’s plays, he chronicles the experiences of African Americans in the 20th Century, through his play, he expresses and causes breakthroughs for the understanding of African American culture. He along with many other playwrights have greatly impacted the world by choosing to display their beliefs. American playwrights have always been expected to impact and inspire society through their plays, they resisted the world’s perception of “normality” and stepped outside of what is socially accepted. August Wilson believed that “[his] plays offer white Americans a different way to look at black Americans” (Biography.com). Wilson’s plays give insight on African Americans’ lives, that White Americans may not understand without knowledge of black people. August Wilson persistently wrote about the lives of African Americans and he explained why and how they’re lives were affected each day. He explains that, “ all [his] plays are rewriting that same story.’’ He adds on, “I’m not sure what it means, other than life is hard.” (Wilson as cited in Biography.com).
