Qualifications of a Congress member The Constitution states that in order to be a U.S. senator you must be at least 30 years old, a citizen of the United States for at least nine years, and a resident of the state from which they are elected. The senatorial term for the elected is six years, and every two years one-third of the Senate stands for election. In the House of Representatives you must be at least 25, a citizen for seven years, and a resident of the state which has sent them to Congress.
