Has anyone ever thought about the people who built the buildings? Has anyone ever thought about the work that is done to build hospitals, schools, bridges, and houses? There is a high chance that most people in the United States have come across some type of construction that is being done on their way to work or on their way to the store. It might have been a construction of a new road, a park, or even a skyscraper. The amount of work that is done to build a dependable and efficient structure means that a construction worker needs to spend a lot of time and energy in the work area. Such a job puts a high level of pressure on each worker because they daily deal with many difficult problems such as delays, bad weather, and deadlines. Both female and male construction workers end up working equally as hard in order to overcome these difficulties, but not both of them are offered equal opportunities to be hired in the field of construction. Male workers have historically dominated the field of construction. Construction jobs such as glazier, plumber, painter, and electrician have been seen as male jobs for many years. So, it is not surprising that there is a lower number of women workers in this field of work because women are seen as delicate and weak due to the stereotype of our culture. Therefore, there is less faith and trust in women’s capability in doing a “man’s job.” Factors such as sexual discrimination, inequality in payment, and an unwelcoming environment in the
Women are confronted with lower salaries, less opportunities, and a lack women role models compared to the males in the field of architecture. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, full-time architect females to-this-day get paid twenty percent less than male architects. Another recent survey demonstrated seventy-five percent of women on the job have experienced sexual discrimination. In comparison to other careers, female architects leave the field of architecture in troublingly, larger rates. Advocacy groups, like Equity by Design and ArchiteXX, have been making efforts by spreading the professional obstacles women encounter and researching a way to retain more female architects. In conclusion, a revolution will not occur without the help of professional organizations and a change in society’s
When applying for a job, women have been turned down because “even though they have fantastic qualifications, the longtime clients of the company are more comfortable handling men” (2015, para. 4). Women get turned down for reasons other than qualifications, showing how discrimination is a large factor in the job searching process. Men on the other hand, are rarely turned down for jobs because of their sex. This skewed job application process causes a snowball effect into the rest of the workforce. All of this ends up bringing different industries for male and females. Some sectors of work are male dominated, while others are female dominated. According to the Catalyst knowledge center, the most male dominated sectors of employment are brickmasons and stonemasons with men taking 99.9% of that field. The most female dominated sector of employment are secretaries and administrative assistants with 95.3% of women taking that field (2015, para. 11-12). Male and female based industries tend to have trends with them. The male based industries are more physical labor and construction type jobs, where women dominate the assistant and the secretary sector of the workforce. This segregation of genders into different workforces is why it is hard for women to seek employment in “male dominated industries”. Next, it leads us into the third and final snowball effect. In general throughout the U.S, women do not get equal
The construction industry has been around since the beginning of civilization and since that time people have continually tried to find better ways to build. The speed with which the construction industry moves is unlike any other. Things are done very differently than they were 20 years ago, and things will likely be done in a new way 10 years from now. The vast history and seemingly exponential growth of the industry means people must find innovative ways to gain an advantage. Drone technology has expanded in recent years from military innovations to civilian applications, and while it may not appear personal drones provide much benefit to the construction industry, their limitless applications yield innumerous opportunities on a jobsite. This paper explores some of the many uses a drone can have to advance the construction industry, as well as the liabilities which also come with this new technology. This paper will focus on the areas of efficiency, safety and security; how drone uses can make jobsites run smoother and safer, while also recognizing how drones will add the long list of concerns contractors face on a daily basis.
1. Name and briefly describe each of the two basic types of competitively bid construction contracts. Which type would be most likely used for building the piers to support a large suspension bridge. Why?
To appoint a recognised and competent contractor. Western Health and Social Care Trust have appointed McLaughlin and Harvey. Western Health and Social Care Trust need to appoint a recognised contractors because if they appoint someone who is not a recognised contractor and something goes wrong with either the building or someone getting hurt then it would be the client getting the blame.
People look at a harder more difficult job and say “ Oh, that looks like a job for a man” just because it takes more labor. Women are stronger than they appear. Just because women do not have as much testosterone as men do, does not mean that a women can not do the same job as a man. Women are strong and intelligent. Women often get overlooked because they are looked at as weak, frail, or delicate. Women have recently uncovered a new found strength that they have never known before. Now in the 2000’s women now work beside men at what was used to be known as a “ man's job” and do construction work, mechanical engineering, surgines, and much more. “But that strength must come with integrity. If it doesn’t, he is a strong bad man. And while more than a few women fall for bad men (precisely because of the power of masculine strength to attract women), most women do not want such a man over the long
Construction Management is the overall planning, outlook, coordination, budget and control of a construction project from start to finish. Without them, construction projects would be very unorganized and chaotic. They make sure projects run smoothly and efficiently. They work with electricians, plumbers, carpenters and general contractors to produce the safest and best way to complete the project for the customer. Being a construction manager is a good job because they help many people build what they need.
stereotypes have laid down habits of thinking that allow us to automatically expect less from women, to underestimate their abilities and their work, to categorize each successful woman as an exception. Research has shown that both men and women are prejudiced against women. In studies that do find gender-based differences in the evaluation of work, that difference is usually in favor of men. The tendency to undervalue women and what they can do is so powerful that an influx of women into an occupation or profession is enough to lower its status in the eyes of observers.
I feel that gender discrimination and construction plays a big role in the inequality between men and women in today’s society.
The amount of women working in skilled trades today, alarmingly is the same as when women first entered back in 1978. Despite the advances women have made in the workforce, construction jobs still employ the fewest amount of women. There are women who have broken through the barriers and pushed past the discrimination who are successful. Women like Brenda Berkman, a firefighter, and Lois Ross, a biomedical engineer, prove that there is a way for women to be successful in the field. The key components that contribute to the success these women achieve is the installation of the Affirmative Action Plan, the installation of unions, and support from other women as well as men in the field.
This reasons the rate of male specialists to build while female laborers diminish (Miller, Claire). The gap in the middle of men and women's wages has declined throughout the years. On the other hand, regardless it stays hard to increase equivalent pay ("Striking Women"). Women are still fundamentally responsible for child and family mind. They say they have set aside a lot of time off from work, diminished their hours, or quit work to look after a child.
In striking resemblance to the aforementioned issues, women experience ridicule and other problems in the work place. As lending evidence, “According to the National Association of Women in Construction, less than 10 percent of women are in [the] industry” (Godwin, 2010, ¶ 9). Since I have worked in a few construction fields over my lifetime, I can personally attest to the mentality of numerous male workers in the business, regarding women infiltrating the ranks. Most often, men believe that women are inferior in the strength, endurance and mental abilities, which all are presumably necessary to be even moderately effective in the trade. Comparatively speaking, as much as nursing is customarily seen as a female position, due to its caring nature, construction is expected to be a man’s job, because of the assumed prerequisite of toughness.
The construction industry in Australia has over the recent three years provided increased employment thereby improving the economic financial performance. This has been fueled primarily by middle market construction firms. However, forecast shows that the total non-residential construction would fall between 2014 and 2016 due to falling levels of investment on project activities. The economic deficits incurred in the construction industry would be offset by investments in the telecommunication and commercial construction, especially in apartment building.
Abstract: With the development of the city construction, the investment in construction is increasingly expanding. However, the construction is large-scale and the number of construction project still under construction is amazing. The projects quality problems have taken place on a national scale with some extent of the damage. In order to ensure the construction projects went well, it is necessary to strictly supervise the whole process of construction project from supervision department. Keyword: construction supervision, construction quality, the develop actuality.
The construction industry much like other industries is dependant with the distribution of “scarce resources” (Drake,1994). Many of its resources known as the factors or production i.e. labour, capital, land etc. are limited (Gregory-Mankiw, 2008), however, wants and desires within the industry are infinite (Myers, 2013). Kishtainy notes that this creates two problems; at any given time, there will be a fixed number of resource, against numerous wants. Sloman 2003 adds that in an effort to rectify this, he argues that we must make choices, in terms of choices within the construction industry Myers suggested that firms need to considered their investments made, how they construct and for whom they construct for.
