It is recognized that construction has a detrimental effect on the environment. The root of this problems is commonly due to damaging designs and marginalized developments. The construction itself has also a great participation to this. To mitigate the risk of an absolute damage to the environment, legislations to protect the environment are developed. Projects that have insufficient recourses from the beginning will cause stress among the construction professionals. The principle contractor has a role under the CDM (construction development management) regulation to manage the health and safety of the construction project he/she is assigned too, this involves liaising with the client and principle designer during the time period of the project this also is included during the pre-construction phase; this is the design and planning stage of a project that is to be undergo. The principle contractor will to support the management of the project beside the principle designer and client. Managing for a principle contractor has a wide range of different factors such as planning, managing, monitoring, securing, providing welfare facilities, providing site induction and liaising of design. Planning will involve the principle contractor to prepare a construction phase plan that will allow the works to be carried out without risk to health and the safety of sight. I am interested in undertaking construction project management because some of the modules undertaken during my study are in common with this master's program. Some of those modules are: construction technology, principles of management, contract administration, professional practice, environment studies and financial accounting. I would like to develop my knowledge and understanding the management of construction project, as a quantity surveyor, this will enable me to perform my work professionally. During my short period working in construction industry, I realized how the industry is multidisciplinary, it involves many people with different background, and it is hard to manage, coordinate and communicate with people at all levels. Communication is almost always named as the second important skill by project managers and team members. Thus it is essential to gain skills and knowledge in managing people and the organization. A quantity surveyor should emphasize on contract management while running a

In recent years there has been an improved development for the need of design management in construction. Effective design management is necessary for a successful project but the clear picture of design management is not understood properly (S Austin, 2002). Design is a very key aspect of construction and with the help of a good team; good sustainable projects can be produced. The need for improvement of design in construction is very necessary. Delivering the project on time, budget and providing a value to construction is needed (S Austin, 2002). However the role of a design manager is poorly noted and does not have a robust path (Newton, n.d.).
In this industry, there is a compilation of jobs that are necessary in project completion. There are those that fund, construct, analyze, budget, and schedule the project.
