Constructive Criticism: Improving My Writing

I think there are some areas that still needs to be improved in my writing. For example, I have always struggled with reaching the minimum length of the essays that I have written in this semester. I also need to work faster on my assignments, and mapping out a timetable would be great solution in order to finish on time.

Throughout the year, my scores in writing have gone up and down but has shown a general increase. My current writing average is higher than my writing average at the beginning of the year which shows my improvement. My biggest problems in my writing have been MLA formatting, grammar mistakes, and commentary. At first, I made MLA formatting mistakes constantly with my margins, contractions, spacing, and headers. My first few writing assignments were filled with MLA formatting errors but over time, as I lost points from MLA formatting errors, I learned to avoid them. Now, I do not get marked off for MLA formatting at all. My grammar mistakes have always existed in my writing assignments but I’ve seen a slight, steady decrease in the number of

To improve my writing based on the online tools feedback and analysis I will engage in more reading and writing. The first point of reference is to utilise text book such as the Communication Skills Toolkit: Unlocking the Secrets of Tertiary Success by Grellier and Goerke (2010). In addition The Little Red Writing Book: Better Sentences (n.d.) offers another medium for writing effective sentences. The benefits of The Little Red Writing Book entail sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar and syntax where at the end of each section, there are activities for practice. Furthermore, text books and tutor’s notation for required discipline will enhance my learning in reading and writing.

I feel the most confident when I revise my writing as I go along with the process; in some ways I feel it helps me organize and put all of my thoughts together. I do agree that the multiple writing drafts are very beneficial however, I think I would do better if I could revise my writing as I work on it and only have one continuous draft.

My entire life, reading and writing have always been my weaknesses. Coming from a Hispanic household, the way things are said and written does not usually translate the same way to English. As much as I have always tried to push myself and keep improving, I feel like I have reached a point where I need a small push and guidance to take my writing to the next level. From my high school, I learned a lot of writing technics and have some small grammar lectures every now and then. Writing my research papers, preparing speeches, and all the college essays have given me lots of practice with different writing styles and methods. As a student in High School, my writing composition was not very well developed. Although, I got help from my teachers, in addition to that, on my free time I went to the library to make extra corrections that were needed. My dad also helped me all throughout high school by reading over my essays and making comments on what I need to improve on, but even then I believe that my writing could have improved. So, I finally decided to attend the college. I was doubtful of my abilities to take on and pass college-level English or any other class. At the time, I wasn’t familiar with academic writing or reading and that was confirmed by placement test I took, and thus I was assigned to ARC 99 class, for a good reason. While I like to read, writing has never been one of my favorite things. I never write because I had a passion for it, or for pleasure. I can recall in high school, whenever there was something where I was required to write more than one page I will felt discouraged. Writing should come as second nature, because after all it is putting words we speak on paper, but whenever I have to put words on paper I encounter certain issues. I have three issues when whenever I write. Documenting in-text citation and reference is a very important aspect when writing academically. I noticed that even though I have the general idea of citation and referencing I still have a lot to learn. I always want to give credit where it is due to avoid plagiarism. Throughout my life, I’ve wrote to an unfathomable extent. Though some of my writing is favorable, I still have countless improvements I should make to my writing. I need to improve my writing in three major ways. First, I must halt my vast comma use. Throughout my writing many errors exist in my comma placement. Mainly adding too many commas, is the main problem. To counter this problem, I must proofread my work before submitting, and to be assured to have an equal balance between periods and commas. Over the eighth grade year, I have learned to effectively use feedback and reflection skills to strengthen my writing. These writing processes taught me to include peer and teacher feedback along with self-reflection to earn a better grade on my writing pieces. In the beginning of the year, I would simply complete the drafts my teacher assigned. Proof of my original writing process is shown in the essay, titled One Necessity of a Hero: Personal Sacrifice, in which it reflects on the Thematic Unit. 1. My writing has grown tremendously since my first essay of the semester. The first essay I struggled with organization and sentence structure. Considering my last essay, I have been able to organize information to make it much more pleasing to read. Likewise, in my second essay I had some trouble with the MLA format. Writing is an art that you either love or hate in a sense. My time as a student in the past use to be the type that despised writing after the knowledge I gained from this course that has really changed. The problem came was not knowing how to revise my writings. Revising is a tool that is just as important in developing a paper than writing it. I was the type of author to think everything I wrote was perfect and wouldn’t take revising as a serious step. With this drawback fixed I’ve taken huge notice in how my papers sound and grade on an academic level. What aspects of your writing give you the most confidence? What needs additional work, and what can you do to improve?

During my educational career I have written essays that had purpose or value in an educational environment for grading. Whether this was my intent or not it was what was asked of me by my instructors. Throughout all of these essays I keep a moderate amount of my own honestly throughout them. This is especially so in any essay that must ask questions. Luckily you, the reader, get to witness this. This assignment has asked questions for each and every paragraph that will be included but I might throw in a little bit of my own touches here and there. Before I finish up here I have to address them. Previously the length of my writing was much greater and it almost upsets me to think of the degree I use to write at in high school compared to now. I was a confident writer that started on the first sign of an essay. Unfortunately I am not being challenged and it shows in my ability to perform. I plan on examining my college work in order to show my growing apathy toward writing. Overall, and I mean overall, my college experience (not just in writing) has felt like a joke. The punch line is the amount of my money that will be wasted and let me tell you, it’s hilarious.
